He spent a good bit of time trying to get my laptop to boot up and eventually removed the hard drive and battery to take them to his home workshop so he could retrieve my info and put it on my thumb drive. He rang me in the evening to say that sadly the hard drive was corrupt and couldn't be accessed. The battery had begun to bow upward, so it was a goner too. In his opinion the 7 year old machine wasn't worth fixing because at that age things would just keep going wrong. Kinda like a used car.
