I'll start out by saying I really don't like coming here. Visiting several times a week seems to compensate for a lot of good eating and drinking I enjoy. It's also helps my golf game. I'm pretty sure Mary Free Bed is the newest YMCA to open in the Grand Rapids area. It has been open since December, 2015 and still has that "new car smell". Facilities and locker room are squeaky clean and equipment is always in good repair. Staff is friendly and responsive-always helpful. This location seems to have it all-multiple basketball, pickle ball courts, track, two pools, all types of classes, equipment and weights of all types. There also seems to be quite a bit of redundancy with the equipment-no matter how busy, you can always find what you need to exercise with. Our membership allows us to use YMCA's all over the United States. Having done this in many other locations, I'm really thankful Mary Free Bed is my "home" YMCA. I'm James left downtown Y because of too many on cell phones on machines n benches. Often people grab 3-4 sets of dumb bells so no matter one else can use them. Half of my visits I end up having to leave before work I finish workouts. Way too many young women in yoga shorts and pants that are beyond belief. It's not a strip club? Tired of seeing way to much of it. Makes you wonder what they will wear in a year. I like women but I don't understand what is their goals. There is nothing often no staff in work out area. I had my car blocked in and one time asked greeters for help. They all said they had no chance idea what to do. They actually said they need to ask the facility director. Finally the facility director came along. She didn't say hello or introduce her self. I've never seen her in the gym part. She could do her job from another state. She's as friendly as a cornered honey badger. I complained to a Y exec. She said I could guit and I'd not need to pay a fine. It's not a gym for serious workouts or anyone who doesn't like silly fools on cell phones who do a set every 5 to 10 minutes. It's clean and new. Too bad it's not able to stop cell phones. After each set 1 5 to 10 min on Facebook or Amazon trying to buy skimpier pair of shorts. Honestly the place is a sick joke on real workout people read more

So, I love this place. It's wide open, and most of the workers are so kind and helpful. There are 2 pools, 2 aerobic rooms, 2 community rooms, a large kid zone, 4 basketball courts, and countless weights. The indoor track is another favorite for my family. The instructors are amazing. They push you to work while you're there, but also allow you to work at your own pace. Two cautions: 1. sometimes the schedules on the app aren't super reliable. 2. Programs- sometimes the classes fill quickly. Sign up or get there early if you're really interested. read more

Too crowded and taken over by little kids. Asked for a Lap Pool schedule and they gave me one from February 2022.

Wonderful facilities. Clean locker rooms. Friendly staff. Friendly people. Awesome classes. Clean equipment. Never too busy. Just a few things I have to say about my new favorite place to workout and bring my friends. I recently became a member here at Mary Free Bed Y, and it has exceeded my expectations. I've never been a member of a gym EVER. I was so afraid of gross stinky sweaty stuff that goes along with gym type activities....BUT I must say, this is the perfect place to get fit, have fun, and bring your family! read more

Have only done a tour, as they don't officially open 'till tomorrow, but I'm eagerly anticipating this great new space for the Y in GR. Not quite as many facilities as the downtown location, and the "fun pool" looks like less fun, but the machinery looks good, and it's in a great location. read more

So every business has some kind of social distancing protocol but this facility. Not sure why. The place is usually packed with kids after 3pm most days and all day on weekends, the classes are being moved back into the tiny rooms so they can bring in more basketball players to use the courts. Masks are rare. It seems like a hotbox just waiting for a Delta super spreader. The machines are all close to one another also. I'm not sure what they are thinking. Maybe not safety?? I'm scratching my head on this place as they use to be socially conscious. read more

This is a really nice facility. Everything is always very clean yet the people cleaning go unnoticed - which is a good thing at a place like this. Everything is always put away and I don't feel like I am picking up after people or looking for equipment I want to use. They have a great variety of cardio equipment. More variety than I have see anywhere else - from beginners to advance to upper body cardio equipment as well. I love that they have TRX available and you don't have to take a class for it. They also have a great upper body rope that is on a pulley you can pull for a great exercise. There is a huge variety of workout classes, group classes, swim classes, a track, basketball courts and a pool. This is probably my favorite y of the ones around. read more

I've been a member for a year and half. This place has degraded due to signing up way to many members to support the facility. Now it's like a gigantic day care with kids running unsupervised in areas they shouldn't be, and not enough equipment to support the amount of members. They staff's customer service is not that great either. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

I come here often for both work and after work for personal exercise. I am always treated with respect and enjoy working out here. One thing that could be improved is the sauna cleanliness. I have noticed the lack of cleaning here over the last 3 months, I have not seen a clean floor. I enjoy this YMCA with such a young and exciting group of employees. Machines are accessible for those in wheelchairs which attracts a different population from what typically is seen in the gymnasium. read more

Clean. Variety of classes all day everyday. Excellent instructors. Inclusive environment (love that). My only criticism would be that some of the studios are too small to accommodate everyone who shows up, but that hasn't hampered attendance. Something for everyone at every fitness level. read more

The Y shut down all of its facilities for 3 and a half days for weather the week of January 30. Note, MVP stayed open as did big box retailers who have equal or more employees. For the average cost of membership and for typical 3 days per week usage, this amounted to a loss of $8.86 per member. The Y should refund this money. read more

Just joined a month ago and my family loves it! My wife works from home and does a daily visit to workout with our two kids in their child care facility. Staff is nice, classes fit into both our schedules, it's clean and never TOO busy for our liking, and we love taking our boys to the pool before heading home. Well worth the money! read more

This is a beautiful, large YMCA. Just opened in Dec 2015. Staff is very friendly. Lots of free classes offered, plus what is unique is TRX in the workout area, plus a room where kids learn how to cook (and a greenhouse). Very cool. Lots of parking too, which is always appreciated. read more

Was checking this gym out today to potentially become a member, and it is safe to say that I will not be interested. First arrived to the gym, and when we went to get a basketball the "wellness coach" was extremely rude. Claimed she would kick us out if she saw any "dunking". Just a poor first impression, and have never received such rude customer service. No thanks! read more

My friend and I were trying to put in some work and one of the workers came up to us and asked how old we were. We are 14 and the guy said we can't use any weights. Which I thought was outrageous because we pay to go here and we work out daily. They shouldn't be telling us what we can and cannot do when we pay to work out here. read more

Huge YMCA. I travel and frequent many Y's and this one is awesome. Worth the walk from the hotel in the cold and snow!
