Let me preface this by saying I never write reviews. That said, Dr. Mary-Lee Wong absolutely deserves one, and a five star review at that. Why? Because she's compassionate and warm and actually cares about her patients- she actually takes the time to ensure she has all the information she needs and goes above and beyond to not only answer questions, but to explain things to patients (at least in my experience). You won't be rushed out of her office because she takes the ample time needed to get to the bottom of what's wrong. In addition, she has a sunny and cheerful demeanor which is always nice, but especially at a doctors office and even more so in 2020. Dr Wong is literally, THE ( not even one of the) BEST allergist I have ever encountered. She was the allergist for my father ( a foreign citizen who does not speak English ) , who has very complicated and chronic urticaria ( hives ). During the two visits , she was very patient at listening to my fathers conditions and explained thoroughly where her diagnosis and recommendations came from. You could tell she genuinely cares about her patients, and really takes the time to make sure the patient is comfortable and understands what medications they are taking / why. My father has had many allergist in the past due to the allergy mentioned above in his own country , however he flew to New York just to see dr Wong . Dr. Wong is one of those specialty doctors that make you feel taken care of. I went in because I have terrible reactions to bug bites. She was so thorough in her care with me, taking time to understand my history, ruling out any other allergies, and really giving me education on what to do, and when I need to take action for a severe bug bite. At the end of the visit, she had me write down together our plan of care and next steps, and gave me a copy of it so that I was well informed of what we did, (test/discussion), and what steps we need to take next. She spent an unexpected amount of time to make sure all my questions were answered. She even requested a blood test that was done immediately in the same room, no need to go to a separate lab. I left there with real time results with one of the environmental skin tests that was completed, and understanding what to do if I get another severe bite, and preventative measures. She was excellent, I already have an upcoming video follow up to review my bloodwork. I highly recommend her!!!! She is extremely knowledgeable, honest, caring, and thorough! I had the distinct pleasure and good fortune to have Dr. Mary Lee-Wong as my allergy specialist last week for my 1st visit for allergies in a very long time, and I very happily have another one today. She was fast to assure me that she will help me with my allergies and is as caring as it gets! We started with the basics with the environment testing 1st last week and food allergy tests are today. I had no idea I was allergic to so many things, but I feel that I'm in the most capable hands that can help me! I'm not generally excited to go to Dr. appointments in general, but I can't wait to go today! I had a sudden and mysterious allergic reaction (hives) and was advised to see a specialist to determine the cause and course of action. On my first visit, Dr. Wong's office claimed they didn't have a reference from my primary care physician, even though I had requested that a reference be sent well in advance and confirmed that it had been sent. They are in the same hospital, on the same floor, and yet I had to run around for a letter that the hospital's system insisted was in fact sent to her office. Her assistants were very attentive during that visit, but Dr. Wong herself was distracted. She gave me a scratch test for environmental factors, and said I should get a blood test for food allergies, since a scratch test for food allergies might produce too strong a reaction. She also prescribed a host of medications without telling me what they were for or how I should take them. I got the blood test done and returned three weeks later to find out about my results. At this visit the nurse started prepping me for a scratch test for food allergies, in spite of my insisting the doctor had said this was a bad idea, and that I had already been tested. Nope, I had to get this test, even though it basically replicated the blood test I just had. Dr. Wong was even more distracted than before, kept flitting in and out of the room. She administered the scratch test, then asked me to fill the results of the test out myself! ("just see where you are reacting," she said.) The form she asked me to fill out was complicated, you needed to record your reaction to the histamine, and then compare every other variable with that. She didn't tell me any of this, I found out by googling later. At the time I was scared and confused and asked her to please do it herself. At which point she left the room and didn't return for 20 minutes. It gets worse. She "went over" the blood test with me, which basically involved her saying: "You're allergic to so many things, I don't know what you're going to eat!" When I said that there were many things on the test that I eat regularly (on a daily basis) and have no reaction, she dismissed me very rudely. When I begged for some guidance about what course of action to take next, she suggested I take an Allegra every day, in spite of my telling her that Allegra makes me drowsy and unfit for work. I walked out with no clear idea of what caused my reaction or what to do next. I was close to tears. It gets worse. Remember that blood test, which she then replicated with a scratch test? I now have a $650 bill for it. Please please stay away. read more

DR. Mary Lee Wong is very nice, she tells you what's going on with no filters and she actually listens to the patient. She takes your input on the best course of action to take for testing and remedy, be it medication or lifestyle changes. You can never tell what is wrong until you check what allergy you have or not. I have NO idea why she has anything less than 5 stars. I just visited her twice, first for an allergy testing for environment and then a food allergy test. She was really warm and made me feel super comfortable. She asked me why I was coming in and what I was hoping to have done. She talked me through everything and then went to go get everything. She was very personal and said everything she was doing. You have to wait a half hour to see what your skin reacts to. She was soo sweet and really seemed to care about me and how I should deal with my allergies going forward. She prescribed a few things that she knew my insurance would cover and I only had to pay $10 at the pharmacy. Thank you Dr Wong!! The most surprising thing is that I'm kind of allergic to malt which is in beer which is why my stomach doesn't feel good when I drink it! Thank you!! read more

In my early twenties I developed food allergies that sent me into anaphylactic shock; previously I had no food allergies. I have been going to Dr Mary-Lee Wong on and off for the past few years; in hopes that maybe my allergies would change. I use to think that Dr Wong was a little high energy and frantic - and the apt scheduling sometimes was challenging - but when it comes to a life threatening allergy, Dr Wong knew what she was doing, and always pointed me in the right direction. So I continued on. UPDATE: This past year one of my food allergy tests showed that I was no longer allergic to tomatoes (still allergic to shellfish). I had seen another doctor in the past, where the test came back neg and I still had an anaphylactic reaction - so I was skeptical but desperately hopeful. Dr Wong worked extensively with me, with blood work, skin tests and recently an oral food challenge. She sat with me for over four hours and observed me as I ate pasta sauce and a tomato. My fear of going into anaphylactic shock was so intense, that for a while I wouldn't eat anything that had red sauce or red flakes. The fact that she had me comfortable, sitting with me, observing me ... I felt incredibly listened to and taken care of. I'm also no longer allergic to tomatoes. A positive life changing experience. Regarding the staff - In the years past, the receptions seemed disinterested, or there were conflicts in scheduling follow-up appointments. This past years recent experience, the staff has improved. There is one woman that works there now and she's fantastic. It's a hit or miss, but it seems they schedule you in, if there was a mistake w/ scheduling on either side. I strongly recommend Dr Mary-Lee Wong. She may come across as high energy, but she is incredibly detailed and she really listens; and when it comes to a life threatening allergy, she handles it with the most attention and medical care. read more

I went to her for a standard allergy test, and she knew that my insurance wasn't great. However, she said I should "choose" from the menu of allergy test options what I wanted, without really giving me the full details and letting me know what her opinion was on what tests I should get. She gave some guidance, but actually left the room to give me time to fill out a form that she should've filled out. She also did other unnecessary tests that I didn't need. At one point, when I actually elected not to get a couple of tests done, she pejoratively said something to the effect of, "Oh, is it because you're afraid of the costs and the medical bill?" I get that medicine is a business to a degree and she's hustling to make money, but that's just simply wrong. read more

I have a significant number of both environmental and food allergies which exacerbate my asthma, and Dr. Wong has really helped to manage both my allergies and asthma over the years. I am always able to get an appointment within a few days, and Dr. Wong always spends extra time with me to ensure all of my concerns are addressed. She provides annual food and environmental allergy testing for me, and is always available when my allergies or asthma flare up throughout the year. I always suffered from allergies from childhood but never really explored it. My new PCP referred me to this doctor because I have a lot of allergies. I made an appointment and had to fill out at least 12 pg intake application. That was fine with me. After about 30 min of waiting, I was seen by nurse for measuring my vitals and she labeled my arms w/ ball point pen. I thought she would administer the skin test but I was just put back into waiting room for 30 mins. Finally I was seen by the doctor who did a quick exam and asked me to write paragraphs of why I think I have allergies for "insurance purposes". She came back for couple secs and I must have been waiting for 2 hours in the exam room alone. When she came back she says " ok let's check your arm, I'm just "what do you mean, I have nothing on my arm" She then said Oh right, I'm sorry it took so long for insurance approval... (a lie, I worked in medical office before so I know that's not how it works). So she does the skin test (a quick scratch test) but not the panel that I requested for, I was sent there for testing food allergies. I was just told that I have not that many allergies. And I was then told that if I wanted food allergies I have to come back the next day. I don't even know why I decided to give them another chance because the wait time the next day was just as bad. She asked me why I wanted food allergy testing and in the middle of explaining, she goes "ok write it down". I had to write even more paragraphs of why I think I have food allergies. For the record, I went to my appointment around 9: 15 am and I left that office around 3 pm. Other review said the staff were attentive but I don't think so or else I wouldn't have been there for so long. I was a bit suspicious about my results so I had a retest done somewhere else and I had so many positive results that her testing did not catch. Both times I did not take any allergy medicine whatsoever. Highly do not recommend her unless you have money and a lot of time to kill sitting around. It was just a bizarre and surreal experience.... like I never had to do personal documentation for any doctors visit. read more

Dr Lee-Wong is an extremely knowledgeable and caring doctor. She was able to diagnose that my allergy was causing my upset stomach and it was not an ulcer as my gastroenterologist claimed. I have seen other allergists in the past and all they did was skin test me with no definite diagnosis, just keep coming back to their office. With Dr Lee-Wong, I am given educational material to help me. She saved me from being on expensive and risky medicines for the rest of my life. All I had to do was avoid certain foods and be aware of what I ate. She gave me the diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis but explained it to me in simple understandable terms which I am finding much more uncommon when seeing doctors. Her office is very busy with a long wait but that is common theses days for every doctor that is good but I sense when compared to other facilities the staffing is kept to bare minimum at Union Square. My experience was so positive,I had my mother go to see her for her long standing rash that was cured in a single visit. read more

WORST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. When I called to set an appointment I was shocked that they told me to choose any time any day. Now I know why. they just pack in appts and make you wait and wait...while she is hustling, 1ST VIST took over 2 hrs but SHE SPENT ABOUT 10-12 minutes MAX BECAUSE SHE HAD to do the allergy test otherwise she would not have even spent that much time. You'll know why in the next chapter. They'll put you in a room but she won't service you. Just waited in a room...total over 2 hours because she was hustling different rooms.she asked me to fill out the same forms again and again so she can buy time juggling between her "CUSTOMERS", not Patients!!! She was hustling so much we could not do other tests that we had to do and made me come back. Second time was the WORST!!!! 1st the PA comes in for 5 mints to fill out the same F...paper that we filled out earlier and the last visit. Then I was left alone for over 35 mits. I got up and told a nurse what's going on. The Dr. came in and stayed for 1-2mits telling me the same BS and left me again. When she returned she forgot what she did or why she asked me to come back. SHE NEVER EVEN BOTHER TO READ THE CHART WHY SHE ASKED ME TO COME BACK. We were supposed to a blood test. As she was wrap up without getting anything done, I finally said to her that we were supposed to do a blood test and a breathing test. Then she left again, PA came in and we could only do a breathing test. Took me out of the room because they needed to put another "CUSTOMER" and put me in an office or junk room like. After a while the PA came back to do the test. Then the DR flash back in and anxious to book another appt to come back to do the blood test. I figured out her routine. That is she probably bill the insurance every time she books an appointment. Very UNETHICAL. She told me to write in my hand writing that I want a blood test. From what she said I sensed that if the insurance does not cover the cost, she was going to make me pay out of my pocket and I think she was building that by having me write in my hand writing. The next day on Wed, I called left message but no one called. I called on Thur, and Fri, but NOONE CALLED BACK. SO I NEVER WENT TODAY. I LEFT THEM 6 MESSAGES THAT I WOULD NOT COME IN UNLESS THEY VERIFIED THAT THE INSURANCE COVERS THE COST OF BLOOD TEST. ANOTHER THING, THEY ARE NEVER AVAILABLE. IT'S ALWAYS THE ANSWER SERVICE.
