Within the first portion of the class, the instructor clearly stated that taking pictures of the slides was allowed (no video or audio recording). That guidance directly contradicted what happened on the second night, when an individual who later claimed to be the owner abruptly interrupted the class and aggressively singled me out by name, threatening to remove me for doing exactly what we had been told was permitted. There was no attempt to clarify policy, no professionalism, and no respect shown. The situation escalated unnecessarily and created a hostile learning environment. I deescalated and continued the course, but the damage to the overall experience was already done. To make matters worse, once that individual left, the instructor admitted that we had, in fact, been told photos were allowed and apologized. That inconsistency and lack of leadership speaks volumes. As someone who coordinates trainings for a large security company and was actively evaluating potential providers, I can say this experience alone disqualified this organization from consideration. Consistency, professionalism, and clear communication are basic expectations for any training environment, and this fell short on all three. I would not recommend.

Despite recent pressures from Maryland legislation, Berwyn's membership remains strong and may even be growing larger as one of the few venues people can use for their hobby or career. The range itself is set in the woods of rural Bowie. Admittedly, it looks more like a Boy Scouts camp than a major high-tech range, but that's part of its charm. They have three "no sky" ranges, meaning there are baffles set to block any stray bullets that do not head down the range. A 50 foot, a 50 yard, and a 100 yard allow people to use whatever they need for their chosen firearms. As an outdoor range, you can expect to deal with weather and climate as well as insect life. I always check the forecast before deciding to head out there. As a private range, this is not accessible to the general public. To gain access you must send an e-mail asking about membership. Within a month, you will know if you are approved to join (I've never known anyone to be turned down). After that, you have access to the range, but must remember to follow all range rules, including proper safety, avoiding damage to the range, and cleaning up after yourself. If you're into firearms, for anything from hunting to marksmanship, and looking for a good range in the Prince George's and Arundel area, then I recommend looking into this place. This school takes a more curriculum/teaching-oriented approach rather than simple "day care". They follow a pedagogical philosophy similar to Montessori, emphasizing freedom and harnessing each child's own specific interests and motivations. The biggest strength of YS is the outstanding teaching staff, all of whom care deeply about the well-being and growth of the children. The different teachers within the "cottage" of four adjoining classrooms developed individual connections with my son and the other children, knowing well their various interests and quirks. The pre-k cottage director, Ms. Jess oversees the classrooms with expertise and a deep sense of empathy. She effectively fields informal chats with parents about questions and concerns that pop up on the fly. Between the wonderful teachers and cottage director, I always felt that my child was in very safe and nurturing hands. The classroom atmosphere is warm and inviting. There is lots of natural light and many learning stations with carefully thought-out objects left for the children to "discover". Kids get zero screen time at the Young School. Instead of punishing children, behavior is managed through redirection and talking. Healthy snacks are offered, and the staff teaches and practices good hygiene. The main area that could be improved upon is communication from the director. On several occasions, I received mass emails chastising (unnamed) other parents for taking screenshots of the live video feed, requesting child-specific changes to naptime logistics, incorrectly using cubby space, and calling in to the classroom during non-naptime hours. ("Any parent disrupting the day too frequently will lose camera access and a parent meeting will be requested.") I would prefer these types of issues be resolved by one-on-one conversations with the relevant parents, rather than public shaming. The unprofessional tone of these emails was underscored by a lack of basic proofreading. My child's classroom had high turnover, with three different teachers in a six-month period. Shockingly, when one left and was replaced by a brand new employee, parents were not given any notice whatsoever. I showed up one morning to drop off my son in his classroom and encountered a total stranger who claimed to be in charge. Luckily, another teacher was in the cottage area and vouched for the new teacher's legitimacy. Lack of preemptive communication on this type of matter is unacceptable. Another instance of poor communication occurred when initially attempting to enroll my child. The paperwork was confusing and I had trouble getting questions answered, as other reviews have noted. Overall, I recommend the Young School as a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for child; parents may have to deal with some unneccesary hassles.

Long time shooter (almost 50 years) with CCW in NJ and PA. Unfortunately I needed to take the excruciatingly (in a Constitutional sense) long 16 hour Maryland qualification course. Thanks to Mr. Stimson, owner and operator of MFATT (Maryland Firearms and Tactical Training) I survived what I first thought would be an ordeal. MR. Stimson however made the experience more than tolerable. in fact I and the other several students really enjoyed the class. You really can teach an old dog (speaking of myself) new tricks. Mr. Stimson is an outstanding instructor. He skillfully covered all necessary topics in a professional and easy to understand manner. Many new or novice students were in the class. Both classroom and range instruction was exceptional. The price was also extremely fair and much less than others covering the Maryland requirements. He also sold (at considerably affordable prices) ammunition and shooting supplies if needed to complete the course. Moreover for those not yet having a weapon or safety equipment he provided a handgun for Range QUALIFICATION, and Ear and Eye protection as well as the NRA B27 target. I Can't recommend him enough. if you're in need of firearms instruction for ANY REASON, whether basic or advanced get over there. You won't be disappointed. The trainer Ransey Stimson was a great instructor. I couldn't of chosen a better instructor, especially being a first time user. He was thorough in his directions and a lot of 1 on 1 quality instructions. Mr. Stimson hasva life time of experience with firearms, and it shows in his knowledge and work. From 20 years military experience, close to a decade in firearms and outdoor spoorting equipment sales, and decades competitive shooting and hunting experience; When it comes to firearm use, purchase, transfers, training, storage and all around firearm safety, he'll be able to guide you. I'd recommended anyone here, especially if your new to firearm use, or have any worries of safety or concerns. He'll help clear up any misinformation, and have you leaving with confidence. Got my CCW trainings here. Very great instructor, very competitive price you could find in town, and the price is completely transparent (if you ask, it is just not including fingerprint, guns rental or ammo (cuz you need to pay to the range if you need one)compared to other hundreds of class in other institution; range lane fee IS included). Maximum class is only 6, so Ransey really pays attention and patience to all of us, and are very happy to answer any universal or personal questions,even after class is over, he is willing to keep answer your questions. P.S He also offer free cold soft drinks and snacks, makes you feel at home. Definately recommend it to anyone!!!! read more

My husband and I took our HQL certification class with Master Arms & Tactical. It was fun and relatable! Instructors are very informative and take time to answer questions. Plus, they are super patient! The class held a mix of students from every background and skill level, which made it feel super inclusive. They walk you through the MD Gun Laws. They teach you what firearms are and aren't. There is a practical session to just get familiar with holding a gun if you haven't done that before. They instruct you on the mechanics of shooting, with stance, sight, breath and firing. Then you get to shoot a hand gun. It is inside the classroom with a crayon shot...which was nice because it wasn't too loud. They must be pretty good because I hit the target square on my first try!...and I've never fired a handgun before! I would recommend Master Arms & Tactical if you need your HQL class or if you are just trying to understand something you don't have a skill in!

I noticed that there were many programs in my vicinity but the prices varied and it seemed as though they were just doing the HQL course as a side hustle. When I came across John's site and his videos, I just got a great vibe that he was a stand up guy and is truly in it to instruct and focus on the important thing: SAFETY! I had reached out to a local company and it took them over a week to get back in touch with me. I was very impressed with the quick response I received from Susan at Fortress Training. I was also somewhat overwhelmed knowing that there were multiple "stops" to make to finally apply for the permit. It really put my mind at ease knowing that everything I needed to do could be taken care of at one place and all at the same time. I took a 9am Saturday morning course in Ellicott City at a local establishment. It was about a 45 minute drive but it was absolutely worth the drive. The course was a lot of fun and everyone I interacted with from Fortress Training had a great sense of humor, so it calmed my nerves (having never fired a handgun before). John introduced himself at the beginning and stuck around for the first half but Dean was our "official" instructor. Both of them had a wealth of knowledge and offered up advice if anyone asked. I really liked that they gave an in depth explanation of MD gun laws, so we left with some excellent and practical information. They were very patient with each student that had questions and their honesty was appreciated. It was also nice to know that they weren't trying to sell me anything. They had several options for things they offered ie small fee for filling out the HQL permit for us, fingerprinting on site (which has to be done before applying for the permit regardless) but you could tell that they didn't NEED our money. I just wish everybody conducted their business this way. Susan was extremely organized and was sharp as a tack with all the forms and paperwork. It was a totally streamlined process and I'm glad I didn't have to run around town putting together everything needed just to be able to apply for the permit. I look forward to taking another course in the future. These guys are the way to go, especially since they're locals and have been around for a while.
