I noticed that there were many programs in my vicinity but the prices varied and it seemed as though they were just doing the HQL course as a side hustle. When I came across John's site and his videos, I just got a great vibe that he was a stand up guy and is truly in it to instruct and focus on the important thing: SAFETY! I had reached out to a local company and it took them over a week to get back in touch with me. I was very impressed with the quick response I received from Susan at Fortress Training. I was also somewhat overwhelmed knowing that there were multiple "stops" to make to finally apply for the permit. It really put my mind at ease knowing that everything I needed to do could be taken care of at one place and all at the same time. I took a 9am Saturday morning course in Ellicott City at a local establishment. It was about a 45 minute drive but it was absolutely worth the drive. The course was a lot of fun and everyone I interacted with from Fortress Training had a great sense of humor, so it calmed my nerves (having never fired a handgun before). John introduced himself at the beginning and stuck around for the first half but Dean was our "official" instructor. Both of them had a wealth of knowledge and offered up advice if anyone asked. I really liked that they gave an in depth explanation of MD gun laws, so we left with some excellent and practical information. They were very patient with each student that had questions and their honesty was appreciated. It was also nice to know that they weren't trying to sell me anything. They had several options for things they offered ie small fee for filling out the HQL permit for us, fingerprinting on site (which has to be done before applying for the permit regardless) but you could tell that they didn't NEED our money. I just wish everybody conducted their business this way. Susan was extremely organized and was sharp as a tack with all the forms and paperwork. It was a totally streamlined process and I'm glad I didn't have to run around town putting together everything needed just to be able to apply for the permit. I look forward to taking another course in the future. These guys are the way to go, especially since they're locals and have been around for a while.

Trusty training has an all female class called "Pistols and Pearls" this class provides an opportunity for females who are looking for a comfortable atmosphere to thrive and learn. An added bonus to this class is his wife who assist him and is the hostess.. She was extremely warm and hospitable. The class entails in class training, hands on gun handling and ends at the gun range. Once the class is complete he equips you with everything you need to complete the process for owning a gun. My wife brought me to GUNTRY for my birthday, and it was an awesome experience from start to finish. We kicked things off with a simulation session, which was so cool. I am already planning to do it again. The shock pack that zaps you when you get hit is wild. It is a little crazy, but honestly really fun to try. We spent an hour at the range afterward. It is definitely loud and a bit tight, but it gets the job done. The staff was friendly, patient, and very helpful the whole time. The retail shop is huge too, with tons of firearms and accessories to browse. We ended the night at their cigar and whisky event, and that was a great time. The whisky was strong and plentiful, and dinner was delicious. It was all catered in house by the cafe. Pricing is pretty reasonable overall. Their lesson rates seem lower than a lot of other places I have seen, although I have not had a chance to take one yet. My only complaint is that I wish it were closer. I live in DC, so it is definitely a trek, but it was worth the drive.

SCAM ALERT! I took…read moretwo days of classes mid September 2022, and was told that I would receive a copy of fingerprints and proof of class completion on the same day as the final class. At the time of writing this review, it has been FIVE MONTHS and I am still waiting on those documents, with no indication as to when or if I will ever receive them. I have unsuccessfully tried to reach out to Iota many times. On the (very) rare occasion that they have responded to any texts, emails, and phone messages over the past months, they claim they will send the files within the next day, which has always been untrue. The day one class was very disorganized. I was notified at 10pm the night before that the class was moving from the Iota facility to the HoCo fair grounds where a gun show was taking place. The class was in the main building, along with all of the gun show sales booths. It was very difficult to hear the instructors, and random people kept walking up to our class, which was very disruptive. Our class seemed like an afterthought to Iota, as they were more interested in promoting their company at the gun show than teaching the class that us students paid for. They had issues connecting to the internet, taking payment, and taking fingerprints. More of the class was spend sitting around waiting for them to resolve technical difficulties than actually being taught. The hands-on (day two) instructors were actually wonderful! After the instruction and range test, we all ended up sitting around for hours after the class waiting for them to finish whatever administrative work they said they were behind on due to the gun show the previous day. They didn't communicate how long we would be waiting around, so everyone was pretty frustrated around the 2-3 hour mark. It is a shame that there have been these administrative issues, and difficulty getting in contact with the office. Is anyone else stuck waiting indefinitely, or have you found a way to get in contact with Iota?
