    A small place
    Brian S.

A whole heap of books Mary's is a small, one room used book store that manages to fit in a whole bunch of books in a relatively small space. You have to be careful walking around in here or you'll knock over or step on books. Not a place where you can spread out and browse, things are definitely tight inside. Most of the books are paperbacks and most are mushy romantic types. A few hardcover, historic or science books but the vast majority are lighter fare. Mary can be found in front with her head buried in a book. She is friendly in a quiet sort of a way and you get the feeling the purpose of the store is so she can have a fresh and new supply of books for her own enjoyment. I definitely get the impression that she would much rather be reading than talking to me but she is polite and doesn't look too disturbed when you interrupt her reading. The stores takes in old books and gives you credit so you can take out new ones. Almost more of a library than a bookstore and you wonder how in the world she can pay her rent. But apparently she does because the store has been here a while and it constantly gets a new bunch of books. Every time I go in here the entire store looks different. Not a place to find the latest best seller or a book on quantum physics. If you want a conventional bookstore go somewhere else. But if you want a sci fi, mystery or especially some good mushy stuff this place is hard to beat.

I had searched to see if there were any local…read moreretailers as I really like to see before purchasing and this came up (relatively close - still a nice day trip). I was blown away when I stopped in at the selection of not only Trollbeads (more on that) but interesting items. There was a huge assortment of antiques, new crafts, cards, books, vintage furnishings - you name it, I think they may have carried it! But, back to the beads - Karen came over and she was just incredible. She clearly knows her Trollbeads and a total newbie like me learned so much from her probably less than an hour, it was amazing. Not to mention the huge selection. And, the really affordable prices on many beads that you just won't find anymore. I found Karen to be so helpful and charming and honest. It was a really nice customer experience and I highly recommend visiting Twice Told Tales for anyone in the area. Plus, the downtown is really nice with an assortment of quirky stores and restaurants (and plenty of parking). It really is a hidden gem!

First, I love that they have free non perishable goods outside for people to help themselves as they need it. The shop inside is very cute, they have a diverse selection of books inside a cozy space. I liked how it was organized, enjoyed featuring of local artists work, including cards and bookmarks. Prices were what you can expect from a smaller book store, nothing incredibly expensive and overall a good deal. They also had a pile of books by the door that were completely free, which I thought was a great idea. Definitely a great place to stop by if you're looking for a new read!

My favorite bookstore, hands down…read more The team at Heartleaf has created such a welcoming & eclectic environment. They've carefully curating a wide variety of stories, accumulated so many sweet little goodies & knick knacks, & built a wonderful, irreplaceable community in Providence. They put a LOT of effort into highlighting BIPOC & queer authors in their collection. The range of genres & narratives - especially considering the tiny size of the store - is a masterclass in diverse inventory. The very best thing about Heartleaf, though, is the manager. She alone is worth a visit to the store. If she's napping, it's a cardinal sin to disturb her. You'll just have to come back another time to give her a scratch behind the ears. (Penny is the manager. Penny is also a cat. I promise I'm not randomly scratching humans behind the ears.) Thank you Caroline & Mads for everything you do. Long live Heartleaf!

I'm currently in Connecticut for a wedding and staying in an area that is mostly beautiful nature,…read moreparks, and lots and lots of trees I don't get to see very often. While driving around the area I entered "book store" into Yelp and it took me to Pourings and Passages in Danielson. I think the only time I ever came to Danielson was to check out the old abandoned toy factory that I think is gone now, but that was well over a decade ago when I still live in Connecticut so I was pretty stoked to check this small town out again. When you first walk into this book store, it looks like a pretty average book store before you realize it includes what appears to be three or four full retail shops worth of books all separated by category and even features areas for movies and a whole lot of religious stuff. I spent a good 25 minutes or so walking around and checking everything out, now one thing I will say is this place definitely had the smallest horror section I've seen out of the Connecticut book shops, but hey, maybe it's just not a big genre in the area. Overall, Pourings and Passages is a massive place to explore and had a ton of books at some of the best prices I've seen in a very long time. Actually, now that I'm writing this I just realized I forgot to pick up the Christopher Golden book I found for $3 and I'm pretty bummed about it. Oh well, point is, come and check this place out for yourself.
