This place has such excellent food. The service is amazing .but it is not to cheap and the restaurant has great service.

Despite the pandemic, Masala Bhavan is busy! When I called to pick up an order, I was put on hold because he was with another customer. When my husband went to pick us his food at 5:30 p.m., we saw a delivery person leave and there were four other orders ready to go. You get 10% off if you pick up your food. We ordered the Veggie Kuthu Parantha, Eggplant Curry Butter Chicken, Lamb Biryani and butter naan. The parantha is made with bread, peas, onions, carrots and it was very spicy. The eggplant is my favourite - there's a lovely smoky flavour to it. The lamb biryani was a hit too. Fragrant and studded with aromatic spices. The butter chicken was made from big chunks of white meat. The portions were generous, food quality was high, and there was more than enough for four hungry adults. Glad this gem is so close to my home. Makes it a no brainer to order from Masala. read more

Amazing food and service. Definitely recommended, especially if you are looking for some great South Indian food. We went for Mysuru Bhonda, Dal Fry, Poori, Mysuru Masala Dosai, Vegetable Kothu Parotta, and a Veg Combo (Chana Masala, Palak Paneer, Naan, Onion Bhajji, Rice and Chutney. Everything was great. Vegetable Kothu Parotta could have had a bit of acidity (a little lemon) as it was a bit high on spice - and dry ones. But otherwise, it was great. In the end, we also ordered a filter coffee which was great. The staff was good. No complaints there. They have seating options of booth or a table. We went on a weekday afternoon, so the restaurant was quite empty. The restaurant is in a plaza that has plenty of parking but you just need to make sure you register the car at one of the parking meters to get two-hour free parking. The meter is to the right of the restaurant. Overall, a definite thumbs up. read more

This place has amazing Indian food. I love their dosas. They also catered my birthday party and did a fantastic job!

We got mango lassi, idli, ghee roast dosai, masala uttapam and chicken biryani. The mango lassi was a tad sour for my taste. I think the idli and uttapam batter could use just a tiny bit of salt to be able to eat by itself. The tomato chutney is spicy but good, the coconut chutney is good too and they both seem fresh. The ghee dosai was my favorite item. Not too much ghee and crispy. My friend said that the some of the chicken in the chicken biryani didn't seem fully cooked. All in all, would come back to try other things on the menu. The food wasn't spectacular but it was decent. read more

Such delicious food. This location has been our local go-to. Very flavourful food, delicious naan, lovely basmati. Yesterday, however, I picked up food ordered 40 minutes prior. It was not ready - but it was 6:20 p.m. so yes, busy time for sure. I waited in the restaurant watching them prepare naan in their tandoor. While I was watching, the worker hooked out a piece of naan, which fell to the floor.... she picked it up off the floor and placed it on the edge of the tandoor, and shortly thereafter, whilst I was still watching, buttered it up and went to place it in aluminum foil.... very, very disappointed to see this happen, but worse, when I mentioned it to another staff member, the worker denied it had happened, even though she saw me standing there watching... This makes me seriously question the overall preparation practices in this establishment. read more

Upon the recommendation of fellow-Yelper Christine L., made my way over to Masala Bhavan where feasted on chef Karthi's creations for the first time. I'd rate his food at 4.25 stars for the first pass pending it holding its value. Ordered chicken vindaloo ('the curry test' for any chef or cook), lamb chettinadu curry, chicken tikka, garlic naan, and basmati rice. The blended flavours were excellent in the curries, and the tikka was very good. Other upsides? - Karthi's cooking area with clay tandoori oven is open to customers, and is great to witness the use of his oven. In talking to him we agreed that it's hard to find excellent Tamil cooking in the city. - the portions are about the same size as all other generous Indian restaurants, and the take-home portions will provide us another 3-4 meals. Pretty decent! - the space is quite sizable with a triangular seating area. - there's a buffet on Saturdays and Sundays, and if the quality holds up, will likely represent one of the better buffets in the city. From Mehtab owner Jab I learned that buffets in general don't generate enough income to offset ingredient costs and effort, but they do initiate eventual good customers to what's available in the individual dishes. - the bathrooms are clean and good smelling... Located in a strip mall off 37th Street SW, and the only downside to this is that Indigo parking parasites scout the place out on a constant basis and will write you a ticket (as much as it's likely bordering on illegal). Really, the merchants need to band together to push these city-sanctioned 'tax collectors' back, and refuse to hurt one's business with their lame practices. It's costing those businesses in traffic flow and customer revenues. In the meantime, give your waiter/waitress a parking receipt for whatever they may reimburse? I'd suggest trying Masala Bhavan, and returning. It's really good and is perhaps ahead of the other Indian restaurants in the SW Calgary area. read more

Went with family to have a dinner at masala bhawan after reading reviews but were disappointed with the quality as also quantity of sambhar and chutney given with order. Astonished to note and paid extra for additional sambhar to finish the meal. I had not experienced such a situation earlier. read more

You will find great service and food here. We have ordered take out from here multiple times and we have always enjoyed it. We dined in for the first time tonight with some friends and we all really enjoyed it. The garlic naan bread is highly recommended! My favourite was the khorma and butter beef. Glad we also shared lamb Biyani, chicken tikka masala, beef vindaloo and the curried cauliflower dosa as well. Will definitely be coming back next time we carve Indian food. read more

We have a diet restriction for one of my family members. No salt at all. I asked Karthik, the Chef & Owner of Masala Bhavan, if he could prepare dishes I pre-ordered with no salt and he complied. It was wonderful! We ordered Vege Pakora, Vege Samosa, Shrimp Biryani, Chicken Biryani and Eggplant Curry. All these dishes came with raita, also prepared with no salt. All were done without salt and tasted really, really good! Karthik was able to enhance the dishes with the different Indian spices to compensate for the lack of salt. I am so appreciative of restaurant owners like Karthik who can prepare meals for people with diet restrictions. Will DEFINITELY be back!! read more

So wanted to have an easy meal again, and chose this place for a pick up on the way home from a fishing trip. Recently, we also had Indique for pickup so it's easy to make a comparison. I ordered the exact same dishes, lamb vinadloo, butter chicken and beef saag. The butter chicken is great, and it tastes better than Indique. However, the beef saag and vindaloo is not as tasty. The vinadloo has too much tomato sauce, and it does not taste like it got much of any different spice to it. The saag is also lacking tastes, as it is very plain. The biggest issue is its portion is tiny. There are less than 5 pieces of lamb, and less than 10 pieces of chicken and beef to it. Indique is definitely my more preferred place for choice since both location came up to a very similar price. read more

I ordered some of the Hakka items for take out few months ago and thought that it was a little over priced for the portion size but it was delicious for the most part. I had their lunch buffet today and was not disappointed - butter chicken, chattinad goat, mutter paneer, aloo jeera, tandoori chicken, dal makhani .... and more. It was all delicious!! They also bring you fresh naan so i'd wait for that to come to your table before you get started. I would definitely come back to this place with my stretchy pants on! read more

Found a bug in my butter chicken, called the restaurant and their response was very disappointing, stating you ordered from an online portal and not directly from our restaurant so the delivery driver would have done this. Truly disappointed and felt helpless. read more

Very great Indian food. The price was good and the portions were large. Highly recommend the fish pakora, they were very good, fresh and tasty. Also enjoyed the Chinese fried rice. Great service as well. We'll be going back there again for sure. read more

We are huge fans of the dosa. A dosa was our go-to quick, inexpensive dining out meal when we lived in Vancouver so we are determined to find a good one now that we are in Calgary. Unfortunately Masala Bhavan is just so-so. The chutney, sambar and "pancake" were all good but the fillings (I had the paneer and my husband had the chicken) were ground to the consistency of dog-food and were indistinguishable from each other. Added to the filling was way too many peas, and it was not too appetizing. The flavour wasn't bad but the mouth-feel was horrible. We love Southern Indian food so maybe we will give their other dishes a try but we will definitely pass on the dosas. read more

Well, this was our first time visiting. Found Masala Bhavan on Yelp. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of the strip mall, behind the Petro-Can. The menu has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. We had the Butter Chicken and a No-Veg Weekend Special, both were amazing! The Butter Chicken was one of the best we've had, rich, fully of flavour and not heavy, with the coconut rice, delicious! The special with Chicken Korma, and much more, lots of flavour and very filling. read more

This is probably one of the worst restaurants for Indian food l have ever eaten at. The food was bland and some of it under cooked. We tried the buffet, which was disgusting. 8 hot dishes, with 3 meats and 5 vegetable. If you are thinking of going, don't! Save your money. Masala Bhavan is just really excellent. It is probably the best South Indian food in Calgary. The South Indian fare is exceptional but all the food here is fresh and tastes great. And, I love their filter coffee. The chef here is awesome and very sweet. The weekend buffets are worth trying but their ala cart menu is a must try. read more

What a great find ... authentic S Indian cooking in SW Calgary. We loved the dosas, and we know a good dosa when we see one. A pleasant surprise, esp the discounted price on Friday nights. We had the masala dosa and the plain "paper" dosa which were perfectly thin and crispy. The condiments were tasty too. The fish curry was tasty but a bit spicy for me. The mango saffron rasmalai was yummy and the chai very good too. We will be back often! read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. The flavours were very good and complex. We ordered a couple of dosas which I thought were delicious; thin and crispy chick pea flour crepe with different fillings. The butter chicken was very tasty but we only got 6 small pieces of meat in the dish. Very disappointed with that. The curry eggplant was very good but a touch to greasy for my liking. The prices were reasonable but the service was very slow, but at least friendly. There was only one woman on front end and the restaurant was near full. Not sure I would go back but definitely worth a try. read more

I live down the street from the strip mall and have seen at least two restaurants fail at his location so I wasn't all that optimistic that the doors would be open long. However, they seem to be making a go of it so my friend and I popped in late for some butter chicken, a chick pea curry, some coconut rice and (or course) naan. I'm not sure what they did to their chicken but it was, by far, the most tender and delicious butter chicken I have yet to try. I think about it every day might take a photo next time I go to put above my bed so it's the last thing I see before falling asleep and first thing I see in the morning. I really am rooting for this place as they seem to have some made skills. read more

We are always on the hunt for outstanding Indian Food in all price ranges.This is harder than it sounds, especially in Las Vegas, which usually has the best food from all over the world. My favorite Indian used to be Quilon in London, a Michelin rated restaurant. But now my favorite is Masala Bhavan!And it is at a 1/4 of the price of Quilon. Masala Bhavan is a small restaurant and the experienced Chef does all the cooking. No wonder it's so yummy! read more

Delicious food! Everything is so fresh. I've been to many Indian restaurants in the city and this is by far the best. Fresh ginger, fresh whole spices, tender chicken! I prefer ordering dishes compared to the buffet. My favourite is chicken curry. I really hope this place does well and stays in business for long time!! read more

Went for lunch at noon on a Friday, four people. Place filled quickly. One server made for a chaotic and frustrating lunch. She worked hard so not her fault. Overall, was very slow and groups that came in after us were served before us. Ouch! Biggest issue was our food came out separately so we didn't actually have lunch together. Hour and half for lunch is unacceptable. Food was ok. Won't go back, at least not at lunch. read more
