4/5 atmosphere, 4/5 for price, 2/5 food (but I tried a daily special), 5/5 service, 3/5 for business strategy. Overall Meh. I ordered a calamari and prawn salad. Looked great, but prawns were the only nice thing about it. Calamari was hit and miss with half being way too chewy. The salad was bland, where too much oil and raw onion was overwhelming. The prawns were amazing. Saved my last one for last as it was the only thing done right and containing salt! They say they are the best falafel in town, buuut, Dr. Falafel in naschmarkt is pretty amazing. This will need to be tested! Next time... Too hot to enjoy a warm meal. One thing I don't understand about some businesses in Vienna, including this one, is that they charge for tap water. Waow, the food was so good and the portions so generous i simply LOVED it! The falafels are definetely delicious, but the rest of their oriental menu is very tasty as well! The pitas, humus, tsatziki, salats, meat and co are as good as you can dream of... don't forget trying the mango lassi! And if you choose one of their home-made burgers, the chicken's or the vegetarian's ones, you won't be disappointed either! They also propose a weekly menu you will be enthusiastic about! Maschu Maschu is quite close to my house so I've eaten there and had take-out a few times. The food is okay and seems pretty fresh (and I really like their stuffed grape leaves); however, the hummus never fails to disappoint me! I think it's something about this city; I've yet to have good hummus here that wasn't homemade! This is a very vegetarian-friendly place, great for take-out, and it has good mango lassies (lassis?). I know other people that like their hummus, but I am certainly not one of them as it tends to be too creamy and just taste kind of ..off. They also have kebabs and falafel, and offer a wide variety of condiments and accoutrement/vegetables for the various sandwiches and dishes. Neubau's Maschu Maschu is well on its way to becoming a Vienna institution. It hold's sway on the busy intersection of Linden and Neubaugasse with a popular Schanigarten on the Linden Street side. This is Israeli and Middle Eastern food in great variety which I appreciate having been in the Middle East a few times in my life. One of the best meal values in all of Vienna is the Vorspeisenteller here. This large combo platter is like a Wikipedia of Middle Eastern street foods. There are boreks, sambusaks, vegetable dumplings, spring rolls, mozzarella sticks, falafels, broccoli cheese nuggets, and a green salad with a tasty creamy tzatziki anchoring the flavor diversity. And all this for under nine Euros. Yes that is not a misprint. What I especially like about Maschu Maschu is that they have complimentary condiments including a delicious chili concoction and an amba sauce to add to the flavor variety. Now I do have to say that much of the fried food here does appear pre-cooked and merely heated up when ordered. This makes for very fast service and the need for fewer cooks in the kitchen. This is a practice many restaurants do that I'm not overly fond of. Maschu Maschu would cost more and have slower service but be five star if everything was coming hot out of the frying pan and onto your plate. But still with its good atmosphere and competent servers - this a fine Eastern Mediterranean restaurant in Vienna. read more

I had heard only good stories about Maschu Maschu and I have to agree - it's amazing! The place is quite big and if the weather is good, then an outside seating is available as well; service is friendly and fast, the atmosphere - cosy, the food - good! Portions were big and even though the waiter apologised and said that my order might take some time, because they were out of meat (which seemed quite weird at that moment), food actually came much sooner then I expected after such an announcement. It really is the best falafel in town. I've only been to the to-go section, but I've had both the falafel and mixed durums and they are both incredible. Super fresh with a big variety of vegetables and sauces, and I even found the kebab meat to be excellent too. Go for the wrap over the pita... it's a little bit extra, but it's a lot neater and, IMO, tastier. read more

One word describes this place and that is QUICK. We popped in on a saturday afternoon for a quick lunch on the way home and quick is that what we got! Sat down and within minutes the waiter came over to take an order, we weren't quite ready so we asked for a couple of minutes. Well in 2 minutes he was back. We ordered and my wife went off to the loo. Well in less than 30 seconds the food was there followed shortly by the drinks. I was stunned and as was my wife when she came back. Quickest service ever!! We sat right in front of the kitchen area and I soon saw why they were so quick. MIS-EN-PLUS! There were 2 or 3 dishes pre plated and a huge amount of prep ready to go. The two chefs worked quickly and incredibly efficiently to serve the hundreds of customers there. The place was absolutely full but no one waited more than 2 minutes for their food. The table behind us ordered, the waiter entered the order into his handheld, took 3 steps, got the food and presented it to them. WOW! They didn't even have time to take a breath. Sure its not fine dining or chic or anything but if you need a really quick lunch there is literally nowhere else on earth that can deliver faster than Maschu Maschu! We stopped here for a lunch on a hot summer weekend. Great patio, thick shade and lots of food options. I had the weekly special, shrimp and calamari salad. The shrimp and calamari were grilled and spiced to perfection. Absolutely delish! The rest of the greens under them were underwhelming, bland and without any seasoning. However, this couldn't ruin the greatness of the seafood. The one big issue I have, especially in the summer, is to charge for tap water. Here a glass will be a full euro. Good, cheap, quick lunch with friendly service. Had the mixed tortilla (chicken and falafel). Really liked all of the veggies and pickles that came in it. Humous comes in it and you can add your own spices/sauces. The falafel was definitely not the best I have had in Vienna, it was a little bland...If I went back I would probably just go for the meat tortilla. read more

This is another place I always walked by but never went too. I figured that the "Best Falafel in Town," was all talk. I was wrong. The Falafel plate was great and the vegetables quite fresh. I agree that their hummus was a little too "creamy," but not bad overall. We also had the chicken which was well seasoned. I'll be back for sure. read more

Burger is a bit bland (and extremely messy) and the fries are undercooked. :-( Stick with the falafel dishes, which they do very well.

The food there is excellent and inexpensive. We had a meal for 5 people for only 60 EUR. I had the cream sweet potatoes soup, and fried tofu with vegetables - and it was great! For me the only problem with the restaurant was the free smoking on the premises. If you're a non-smoker you have a huge problem sitting in this restaurant. read more

Not recommended. Bought a falafel sandwich takeaway. The food did not look fresh, the hygiene standards (pick up both money and food) was not welcome, and most of all, the food tasted .. well justcrap. Seriously, I did not know that one could make a felafal sandwich taste poorly. Thanks to Maschu for that. Cool place, I live just 5mins walk from it and I love going there and have a small dinner

This place was right down the street from my hotel, so I gave it a try. The falafel sandwich was very good. I went back about four days later and had the same thing. The falafel were ice-cold. I told the waiter that the falafel were cold and he told me that that is how they are served. I have had falafel many different times in many different restaurants and countries. I have never been served cold falafel. I explained that too him, but he insisted that they are served cold. So, I ate a so-so cold falafel sandwich even though I ate a delicious hot one a few nights before in the same restaurant. I will be back in Vienna in a couple of months, but I don't think that I will give Maschu another chance. read more
