Five stars because my tour of 20+ people stopped in Aberlour without any notice and stampeded this pub right when it opened, with only an hour to eat and leave. The 2-3 workers CRANKED and got us all fed while making us feel incredibly welcome even if they were obviously stressed. I thought it was odd that fish and chips wasn't on the menu but I'll disregard it because of their amazing selection of whiskey at pretty affordable prices, as well as some nice domestic beer options. The food was also good, which for me is saying something because most of the food I had in Scotland was generally flavorless and sad. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here (because you'd really be driving out of your way) but if you can swing it, make Mash Tun a stop. read more

They fooled us again. Good reviews abound but it's the usual - the whiskey list is "in process", but not done; you're 6:30 reservation needs to be out by 7:30; food was adequate. Third time they have stuck it to us but now more options in Aberlour. Never again. read more

Everyone enjoyed their meal except me. The chicken was good but the pasta was bland. The mac and cheese was kind of bland as well which is surprising. Its a very nice bar restaurant. Like many of the eateries we're trying on this trip, we came across Mash Tun online. I was excited to try the venison pie. According to my husband it was less gamey than what he's used to, likely due to the domestic farming of the deer and every other time he's had venison it's been wild. So if you're not into gamey meats, but curious to try venison, this could be a great option for you. We ordered a few cocktails and a glass of wine during dinner, but we've noticed a trend. It takes a long time to get drinks out here in the country and I'm not sure why. There were 3 waitstaff for the 7 tables and while the food came out like clockwork, drinks were slow to come by. We got our first set of drinks before dinner and were able to sip them during our meal. I was really excited about dessert and we ordered the cranacan and the sticky toffee pudding. My husband ordered an old fashioned and I ordered a glass of wine, but they weren't delivered until well after dessert was concluded. We even considered canceling the final drink order until our server informed us that the drinks were being made just then, and yet we still had to wait another 10 minutes before we got the drinks. In total we waited about 30 minutes for the 2nd round of drinks and by then we just wanted to leave. The restaurant itself is quaint and cozy with a nice loca feel. Perfect hearty spot for your scotch tour pit stop. We had several dishes and all were tasty. Dry aged ribeye was tasty and a good size. Soup was great, gnocchi was in a heavy cream and filling. Tons of scotch / whiskey varieties and solid cocktails as well. read more

Fantastic BnB in the heart Aberlour. We had a fantastic dinner here. The cheeseburger and beef like pie were fantastic. The service is outstanding. Very attentive waitstaff. The walk from the center of Aberlour was 5 minutes. Plenty of street parking too. The cocktails were OK. The sticky toffee pudding and tea were really good too. We are returning for another meal tomorrow. read more

The Airbnb host suggested a place in town for dinner called the Mash Tun, which is also one of the vessel used to smash the grains in the brewing process in alcohol. The place was also not easy to find, but thanks to my street savvy friends of mine, we found this tiny restaurant and whiskey bar. The food was delicious, and surprisingly affordable! Dinner for 4, with multiple drinks came to under 80 pounds. We had: Steak Diane, Cheesesteak, Chicken and Pork fillet with pepper sauce. While waiting we got a basket of warm bread and well, hard icy butter. I would recommend this place, and make sure you book a table! read more

This is a delightful pub with friendly service and great food. They are also known for their whiskeys. They offer a variety of baguette sandwiches and all came with a side salad and large amount of chips/french fries. There were so many fries that few in our party could finish them. I had the Chicken Curry Pot Pie and was a bit surprised by what I got. I received a good sized bowl of very tasty chicken curry and a fluffy, flaky roll set on top of it. So it wasn't a 'pot pie' per se, but was good none the less. One intriguing aspect of this and some pubs/restaurants in Scotland is dogs are allowed in, which you'll see in a couple of my photos. Being dog people, we love this. And if you are a whiskey person, then this is for sure a must place to visit. read more

Brilliant in every way! Lovely staff, impeccable food, extraordinary bar service, perfect location.

A very nice and cool place. They have a high selection of different whiskeys and beers. The personnel are helpful and service minded. We had lunch there one of the days we where there and that was actually a very good sandwich - not what we would have expected at a bar in Scotland (sorry :) ). I would go there again if I was in the area. Missing TV to see a good football match if that is on and also missing wifi. It is also possible to sleep at Mash Tun, but compared to other B&B possibilities in the area it is to expensive at Mash Tun. read more

We stayed at the Mash Tun on a recent visit to the Speyside region and absolutely loved it. One of the best b&b's I've ever stayed at. After our first night, we looked for other places nearby to have dinner but ended up back here a second time after asking some locals for recommendations! Skip the burger, especially if you're American, as it will not compare to what you're used to. Every single other thing we ordered for breakfast and dinner was delicious. The falafel is great, good salmon, and the beef sandwich with caramelized onions and mature cheddar reminds me more of cheesesteak than anything in the UK since I left home. If you are visiting Aberlour distillery, you can walk to the Mash Tun after the tasting, which gets you more tipsy than many of the others! read more

We read about this gem in the Secret Scotland guide, and happened to drive through town and spot it (keep an eye out--it's not the easiest to see). The staff were amazingly friendly and the food was great--fresh, tasty, and a good amount so you weren't hungry but didn't let any go to waste. I definitely appreciated the homey atmosphere of the restaurant and the fantastic food. I'm not sure if the menu changes frequently, but I got the cheesesteak-style sandwich and I'd recommend it. Glad we decided to stop here--the gas station sandwiches were getting pretty old anyway. read more

I love the mash tun. My family hail from this lovely little village and I spent many days of my childhood happily spent kicking around aberlour. It's definitely a place with a lot to offer, and this pub is one of my favourite places to visit when I come back. It's small, warm and super inviting. All red leather and warmth. The times I've ate there in the past, the food has always been very good, and reasonably priced. They have a great drink selection, but their whiskies in particular are amazing. It is a real community pub and puts on loads of fun events for locals and visitors alike (and if you come in here, the locals WILL talk to you, they are a friendly bunch!) read more

A well appointed, quaint and friendly pub. A scotch bar that has something for everyone, food that exceeds expectations, and a staff eager to impress. We found this gem on our way through the Whiskey Trail. Stopped in for a pint and decided to get a B&B room. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! Stayed in the Macallan room, beds were excellent, room amenities and bathroom were clean and modern as well. Take a walk about town and wander town the trail along the Spey River. Had dinner and scotch which was amazing. Ask the staff about a scotch of choice to match your pallet or try the recommended pairing with dinner. The food was over the top good, better than any restaurant we had on the trip. Breakfast the next morning was even better offering fresh local fare. Highly recommend a visit and stay to the Mash Tun. A charming Scottish jem that can't be missed if you find your way through Aberlour. read more

This is one of those "kick myself" moments. While in Aberlour, I went by this place 3 times and wanted to go in, but never had a chance to go in. As we were on our way to Edinburg, I saw on my phone that this place has one of the top 10 whiskey bars in Scotland. So 5 stars just for that and how cool this place looks from the outside read more

This place is tucked away in the back streets, next to the river and an amazing local whiskey bar with some great desserts and even better selection of Scottish whiskey. This place has all the charm and comfort of a local restaurant/bar! Highly recommend!!! read more
