After a whiskey tour and tasting at The Macallan, we were left hungry having made the 3 hour drive up from St. Andrews. Wandered into the Copper Dog (since it was the only place that had food at 3pm). Quaint and rustic and just what you would imagine in the countryside of Scotland. Finally tried haggis bon bons for the first time and ordered 3 types of local cheeses. The haggis was much more tasty than were originally led to believe. Although it's a mix of heart, liver and lung minced up - it was served deep fried in a bon bon (haggis ball) with a whisky sauce and a wee bit of lettuce. The local cheeses were also tasty served with oat crackers (not as much a fan). The haggis bon bons were so good we ordered another plate to share between the 3 of us. Had a huge array of whisky, beer and wine available. ordered the steak pie, fish and chips and haggis and cabbage. Everything was so good. Who would have thought a small countryside venue would be serving up such delicious Scottish food. read more

Decent food, slow and inattentive service. I asked what beer is on cask as I saw 3 cask handles at the bar when we walked in, Oddly was given a list of 7. Ordered one and it was draft, not cask. Waitress didn't come back by until our plates were empty to ask what we would like for desert. Son ordered ice cream, after 30 minutes, we couldn't wait any longer and decided to just pay and leave. read more

What a cute spot! We set reservations for lunch here in a Sunday and had the pleasure of trying their Sunday roast. This place has such a homey feel and the staff were friendly. We opted to share the soup of the day and the Sunday roast, both of which were tasty. I never know what I want to drink until I see a drink menu, so while my husband ordered a dram and got his drink right away I ordered a glass of wine after we got our soup, unfortunately, the kind staff member placed the order with the bar tender and never brought it to the table. We finished dinner and dessert when another staff member brought it to the table and asked if I still wanted it. I felt bad since it had already been poured so I drank it and as I suspected it would have paired very nicely with the roast. We shared the sticky toffee pudding which was delightful and my husband enjoyed another dram of the copper dog whisky. All in all, we would definitely go back. read more

Staying in Abelour doesn't present a great deal of choices for fine dining, decided to try the Copper Dog instead of our hotel dining room again. Great choice. Fist off - Make a reservation, everything thing in the general area is full and no one minds turning away walk-ins. Started off with a wee sampling of their 400 whiskeys behind the bar, I had the Scotch Egg to start and it was delicious perfectly poached inside and nice and crispy on the outside - Michelin stared chefs would be proud of that egg. Moved to the fish and chips which looked wonderful and turns out - it was. Huge portion or perfectly cooked haddock and a large pile of chips/fries Ended up leaving about a third it was so big. 1 of the party ordered a cranachan (sort of a Scottish parfait with berries and cream and i think crumbed shortbread cookies). It also excelled. Highly recommend, don't miss this restaurant if you are in the area read more

We tried the Copper Dog, we really did. It took us awhile to find the place, not their fault. But we did find the place, and then walked in, and then stood around for 5 or 10 minutes. There was another couple sitting in a booth, but after seeing no other form of life to greet us, or try to seat us, or check in with us, we just walked out and chose another option. read more

Not sure what prior reviews were talking about. Myself and a friend (2 indians with beards) walked into this place and were treated nicely and with respect. We had lots of conversation with waiter and bartender. Service was great. Now onto food and drinks. I had cocktails and beer. My friend had cocktails and whiskey. Everything was great. Had salmon app which was amazing. It was all about the salmon and was great quality. We both had the burgers which were very juicy despite being cooked well done(requirement in scotland). I had a side of the root veg which was simple but i could taste the purity. Were obviously locally grown. read more

Being from San Francisco we're pretty critical when it comes to food but this place totally hit the spot. Don't expect a Michelin star, but feel-good, homecooked, elevated pub food and you won't be disappointed! We liked it so much the first night that the second night, after a day in whiskey country, we canceled our other dinner reservation and went right back. The first night we had bangers and mash and pancetta-wrapped haggis, and the second night fish and chips and the lamb special. -Sausages: well cooked and the mash was flavorful! -Haggis: seasoned properly, had the right amount of salt and a great vinaigrette -Fish & chips: beer-battered haddock with fresh local peas, perfect -Roast Lamb Rump: pretty dang impressive for a cute little pub in the countryside - cooked well! -Dessert: we had some sort of heather (a local flower) mousse and honey; probably my favorite of our whole trip! Service was great. The manager of the place took care of us both nights and was a delight - great sense of humor and treated us well although I'm sure he could tell we had tried some of their local whiskey! Also, if you're staying at The Craigellachie you can't go wrong with the convenience. The other restaurants are 5-10 minutes away and after having some whiskey it doesn't hurt to walk downstairs to a cute, cozy atmosphere for a meal. Do make a res - when we were there they were packed to the gills. A great sign for them! BONUS: Live music some nights and it was great! read more

The good: Quaich Bar upstairs in The Craigellachie Hotel has a fantastic selection of whiskies which is great for pre- or post-dinner drinks. The ok: They offer 3 cask beer selections. The service is decent. The lacking: Food quality! I shared 3 apps and 1 entree with a friend: - Cullen Skink: Mostly potato and cream, bones in the fish pieces, not much flavor. - Haggis: It came cold. Haggis is supposed to be served hot. Beeps and tatties were also cold as well. Not much flavor even with the brown sauce. - Crowdie with beet root and apple salad: Very small pieces of apple and beet root. Crowdie had little flavor. - Beer-Battered Haddock & Chips: Crust was thick and tough. Fish was bland though ok flaky. The mushy peas were the better party of the dish. I would come back for drinks but would probably look elsewhere for food. read more

Food is excellent for this area and the bartender is great, but you might end up smelling like chimney smoke from their cozy wood burning fire. This is the basement bar/restaurant of the Craigellachie hotel. The service is a bit of a hit or miss so come for the food and maybe head upstairs to the Quaich Bar and try one of their 900+ whiskeys. The Copper Dog also has live music a few nights a week, but when I was there it was just a guy with his guitar singing a mixture of modern tunes. read more

Stayed at the Craigellachie Hotel for 4 days, and this is the restaurant on the basement level. Being a fine hotel in a small town, this restaurant and bar gets pretty packed in the evenings, and stay that way well into the night. We ate all our dinners here because it was the best option around in this small village that didnt require a car. Each night the menu would feature a new dish as the special, and it was always excellent. The had amazing seafood (Jumbo prawns, Lobster, etc) dishes and great steaks every day on the menu. The bar area is very nice with a good selection of drafts and drams. We loved our experience here! read more

Terrible service to out of towners or tourists. Despite 75% of the restaurant being empty, we were told they were fully booked. While sitting at the bar we were flat out ignored and never served. If you are visiting Speyside, there are literally dozens of better and more courteous restaurants to choose from and this establishment should be avoided at all costs. read more
