I've been taken my dogs here for many years Dr Barry was an awesome vet and person since he passed away and whoever took it over i would never bring my dogs to there again the staff is rude and I find it so crazy with them looking for you to spend as much as you can my dog had a rash on her stomach the vet shaved the little area and charged me 30 dollars just for that just took her for a check up and they billed me almost 700 dollars I wouldn't recommend them to anybody I would stay away from this place read more

I I have had nothing but positive experiences with the new owners of this animal practice. They are trying very hard to modernize the antiquated policies left behind by the previous owner who I heard many negative stories about. The current doctors , especially Dr. Patrone who I dealt with so far have been considerate, knowledgeable, and compassionate and may I say reasonably priced. They offered me logical options to address why I brought my dog to see them and explained the reasoning for every test recommended. I'm hoping pet owner's in the area support this practice as the more you do the more they will be able to grow into a full service hospital, which we do not have ( similar to the other locations they practice out of). It is also worth mentioning that Dr Patrone has been very helpful in her other locations where they are having problems with feral cats reproducing at an alarming rate and has offered to assist me with TNR for local feral cats which many Veterinarian hospitals will not do!!! read more

My experiences working here helped me decide to no longer work in the veterinary field, instead to skip the know-it-all middle man and only work with shelter dogs. I literally changed career paths due to the trauma I experienced at Matawan Animal Hospital. To say I hated working there is an understatement. This is where I learned that being a vet for a million years isn't necessarily a good thing, it can mean you have outdated views with no motivation for personal growth. As long as you can rake in the bucks with vaccines for puppies, no need to really look within or attempt to do better. just off the top of my head - Dr Barry did not want me to stay with a dog that someone dropped off to be euthanized so it did not feel frightened and alone, told me I had better not give any peanut butter as it will poop upon death and I am going to have to clean it up. I was also instructed to take a large dog that was euthanized and drag it across the floor on a blanket into the back room. I watched Dr Barry do an 'alpha roll' on a puppy- pinning it down on the table while giddily saying 'watch, eventually he will just give up' also was encouraging declawing as 'its better than the cats not having a home'. Why does it have to be one or the other? and lastly, I was told that I was forbidden to show any emotion at all while in the room if Dr Barry was informing someone their dog has cancer/is terminal. I could not console them, could not tear up, I needed to be stone. I had to literally bite my cheek to avoid showing any feelings or showing any compassion to the client. I went to this animal hospital for all my animals, my previous dog got very sick he was having seizures and i kept bringing him him and explaining what was going on, Dr Barry explained there was nothing wrong with my dog, i was planning a trip and my dog had another episode so i called and spoke to Dr Barry, he explain that i was mental and that i needed to "chill out" so when i left for my trip i had to fly back early because my dog was on the verge of death, after i came home and lots of $$ later my dog was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was put down weeks later. Not only did Dr Barry mis diagnose my dog and call me "crazy" i made this mistake of taking my new puppy to him for an exam, he took my dog in the room not allowing me in even though it was over a year after Covid he brought my dog back to me in the waiting area and told me he has vaccinated my dog, this was without me even knowing and later explained my dog needed another vaccine. When i brought him to another vet the doc told me he did not need anymore vaccines. I was in absolute shock that he took it upon himself to give me dog a vaccine without me even knowing. This doc needs to retire. His attitude is unexceptable to begin with and i don't recommend anyone using this vet if you love you pet read more

We wouldn't go anywhere else unless dr Barry was on vacation. He has been the veterinarian for all our 9 dogs (we adopt middle aged dogs) sine we have lived in NJ. He and his staff provide cutting edge medical care with great bedside manners. Our family could not recommend them enough. read more

We went there today for the first time with our cats. One of my cats is a bit naughtier than the other so unfortunately the doctor was unable to give him a checkup. But he did a great job with my little girl, who is much easier to handle. The doctor gave us tranquilizers (for the cat though I could use one myself) and hopefully we can get him updated on his shot soon. I found the doctor and his staff to be friendly and knowledgeable and I'm happy we were able to find such a great office so soon after moving to the area. I would give 4 stars but if I did there wouldn't be any room for improvement when we go back again. Update 10/8/2015 Received a very thoughtful card in the mail from the doctor thanking us for becoming a new client. Another reason we will be back again. read more

I brought my dog here to have tests run. They then contacted me to receive payment and provided no details regarding my dog's test results or information on her health. I then bring my dog to an Emergency Vet to find she is in heart failure. Matawan Animal Hospital had no idea or suspicion of this. It's extremely clear they care more about the bottom line and receiving their money over the wellbeing of my pet. I do NOT recommend this facility. Other than the negligence and incompetency of care, the receptionist is also rude. read more

We switched animal hospitals after someone had taken over the previous one which led to bad experiences. We absolutely love Dr. Barry and his staff! Dr. Barry is very passionate about what he does and it shows! We had 2 senior dogs both with their share of issues and he took the time to care for both of them and made recommendations not demands on how to care for them in their final days. Because of his individualized attention, if you have call to leave a message with a question, he won't get back until very late. I would recommend that you make it a point to say that it is very important should you have an emergency. Additionally, he cares for each pet thoroughly one at a time, so it's a little longer of a wait than usual. I don't mind because I know Dr. Barry is taking great care of each of his patients! read more

It was me and Ricardo's (my pup) first time seeing Dr. Barry this morning, I'm not sure if our prior vet was that bad or if Dr. Barry was just that great. The office was super clean and the ladies at the front desk were very friendly and sweet (already and upgrade from our old office). Ricardo is EXTREMELY antsy and nervous in veterinary offices and of course had a mental breakdown. I'm talking poop and tinkle everywhere! But Dr. Barry and his Vet asst. (can't remember her name but she was great) helped clean up the mess and were very patient with him. The veterinary assistant held Ricardo during his checkup and made it a point to talk to him and pet him throughout the entire 25 minutes we were there. You can tell they really know and care about the animals. Ricardo seemed to respond well to her and stayed calm for the rest of his visit. His old vet wouldn't even acknowledge him and they were very rough with him, not very patient or understanding either. So much so that I just didn't feel comfortable taking him there anymore. Ricardo and I will be returning to Dr. Barry for his follow up and future visits! If Ricardo hopefully didn't make too much of a bad impression thanks guys :) read more

Dr. Barry Kopp and his veterinary practice was recommended to me by several friends when I was looking for a local vet for 2 kittens I adopted from the MSPCA back in August 2013. We visited Matawan Animal Hospital in September 2013 for the first time and were very pleased! The staff and Dr. Barry are nice, caring, professional, knowledgeable and reasonable with their charges, unlike many other places who care more about your money than your pet. I don't know why I waited so long to do this. Dr. Barry was my dog Buddy's vet for 15 years.He is the best. He was the sweetest, kindest ,gentlest ,and most knowledgeable . Bud passed away last October. We both did the best we could to keep Bud alive. He had bone cancer. When the time comes to get another pup, he will be, hands down my vet again. Years ago I had a German Shepard that Dr. Barry treated for years and was very compassionate, especially at the end of her life. So when we got a pup i wanted to go back to him. When our puppy was one year old she developed severe diarrhea. This went on for weeks! On our initial appointment for her illness, it was discussed she needed to be on a diet of boiled chicken and rice and on other visits i needed to order special dog food from his practice. But my dog's illness continued as time went on. I could never get an appointment! I was told to continue what i was doing wait another week, and this went on and on. I could not watch her get any sicker so i brought her to another vet! My poor dog had a PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY, and is now being treated for life for this condition. They would not even give me an appointment! Just kept saying feed her more boiled meat and rice! Thank God I took her somewhere else! read more
