The English Skills Learning…read moreCenter commits itself to providing free English tutoring with trained instructors to immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers. They specialize in practical reading, writing, and speaking skills. For students, they have emerging and intermediate programs, as well as classes that focus on parenting, citizenship and workplace English. In April I attended the ESLC for training to become a ESL teacher. For $50 they provide a 2-weekend training at their headquarters in South Salt Lake; complete with heart-string jerking stories of their students, role playing real-life scenarios, creating a lesson plan and a swanky orange tote bag. The staff and mentors are amazing and I completed the program feeling a lot of responsibility in my new teaching role, but well-equipped and with an ample support system. They also encourage you to sit in on a class to get hands-on experience. The staff at ESLC opened my mind to what a impact confidence in language makes. From a parent who wants to ask questions their child's parent-teacher conferences, to an individual that wants a more fulfilling career.

Classes are typically twice a week for 1.5 hours each time. We also provide free citizenship preparation classes, to help individuals prepare for the US naturalization test & learn English. Students can register for class at the English Skills Learning Center Office on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. We also offer opportunities to become a volunteer teacher in one of our English classrooms. Potential volunteers can apply on the English Skills Learning Center website (eslcenter.org).

The nursing and dental hygiene programs are difficult (whose programs aren't?), but the pass rates for both programs are exceptional. The HVAC program is outstanding, and the director of that program is well connected and extremely informative. In all programs, many of the instructors have been there for several years. The students who focus their efforts...do well. But many students come into the program thinking that it's going to be a piece a cake and it really isn't. There will be countless hours of studying, and homework. And some of the students who fail out of the program blame the school for that, when in reality they either weren't prepared for the amount of work or just couldn't pass. I've watched hundreds of students graduate over the years and get jobs for 2-4 times what they made before they enrolled, and it is life changing money for them. Fortis College is a good school, and yes, it is expensive, but it's a better option than waiting five years on a waiting list to get into a less expensive school. The overall length of the programs are also much shorter, and this allows the graduate to begin working much faster than a traditional college or university.

Terrible school…read more They couldn't give me accurate information regarding X-Ray exposure levels and outright lied about the dangers, admitting to lying to patients as well as a means of keeping them from worrying. When I showed several sources of information from leading Radiation and Dental Organizations they said that all those were wrong, that our textbook was wrong as well, and took me aside and disciplined me for asking questions and "wasting class time" regarding the safety of the profession. On my practice hours I opted to work with a Pediatric Dental Office in the same Dental complex, they turned out to be gossiping about me with the people at the school, and conspiring to get rid of me somehow. I'm ex-military, Honorably Discharged War-time Navy Veteran. I'm also a professional Graphic Designer and Photographer, working as a professional photographer since the 80's. I'm definitely not mormon, however, and here's the main problem. While working in the Pediatric office, a girl told me that she was a model and an aspiring photographer. She showed me photos she took, using some sad setup in her garage with house lamps. I said great, I work with a lot of models and have my own studio, I'd be happy to let her use it. I then showed her a single, very tasteful, fully-clothed photo from my latest shoot, the first photo in my phone from a very cool shoot using different color gels in the studio. It was Lingerie, definitely not even see through, and very well done, and can be found on various sites across the internet today with glowing accolades. I have shared it with countless colleagues and coworkers. The "model" was actually just a mormon looking for drama. I'm assuming she was told to find anything to complain about me for. She walked to the front desk and complained that I was showing her obscene photos and wouldn't look at me or talk to me the rest of the day. Another girl there was going to be attending the Dental Hygienist school in Utah County, one of only a handful in the nation that gives you a Full Bachelor's degree upon completion of an accelerated program. I simply told her that I would be interested in hearing about her experience there because I'd been doing a lot of research on the school myself but don't know anyone attending. She was starting in less than a month. She said she'd be happy to give me her contact info so that we could keep in touch and maybe even help each other with school work. I don't think this girl did anything wrong. Rather, I think it was someone nearby who told the same lady at the front desk that I was "hitting on" this girl and "asking for her phone number". The main Dentist arrived and all he did, in front of all the employees, was brag about his mormon affiliations and how he was doing god's work for mormons by going to other countries and helping people, something literally every dentist from a developed world does. The conversation got extremely uncomfortable and extremely zealous & religious. I shared my experiences with doing even more amazing things in the 3rd world, having spent 13 years of my life alone in the 3rd world, and have some truly amazing stories, but they all just simply walked away. Wasn't mormon enough apparently. I was there only one day. The second day, I went to my personal dentist office, next door to the school, for another day of practice and my second day at that office. Immediately everyone gave me dirty looks and ignored me. Literally every one of the staff, people who were very talkative and friendly the previous time I was there now wouldn't even look at me or acknowledge my presence. I tried to initiate conversation with others there on multiple occasions and they simply turned their backs on me and walked away. The owner of the dental office arrived and was kind enough to insist on letting me work on some patients. He obviously came to help a valued customer not be attacked by some astronomical level of gossip and drama. Others were surprised that I was allowed to do anything at all. After that, the school called me and said that they were terminating me from the school program and that I won't be reimbursed my tuition. My non-mormon wife and I were both baffled. It took days of arguing with the school administration/front desk secretaries and a meeting with the school owner to finally just get my money back. I also had to sign some "I'm so happy with the school" agreement. On the school's Facebook page, the owner is one of the 8 glowing reviews. I assume his staff are the other 7. He seems determined to keep people silent, based on the forms he makes people sign. He seems willing to sue people who make bad reviews. We no longer go to my dentist, sadly. And I've definitely given up wanting to work in a dental office in Utah. This school is radical mormon extremists and everything that's wrong with Utah and the mormons. If I could have given it a worse review than 1 star, I definitely would have.

Have come to learn…read morethat you don't necessarily need them and if you do want a service, there are many that are far more reasonable. But the worst is that they wouldn't listen to my daughters desire to attend a Christian College that would support her desire to be among a body of Christ Followers and seek to serve her God in whatever area that her gifts and talents might uncover. When they told her that her choices of colleges that we had visited were not a good choice for her because she didn't have the grades to get a lot of merit money and gave her a list of colleges, that after reviewing their websites, turned out not to be Christian Colleges, and their not paying attention to her priorities and desires. The husband that is a "hard sell" and turned off my husband from the beginning (I should have listened to his intuition) called and left a horrific voice message on my phone accusing my daughter of "not listening" and "going her own way". What a terrible way to talk to us. My daughter kindly wrote an email thanking Lana for her suggestions and tried to offer better insight into what she was looking for restating what we had already let them know was the criteria for college applications. My daughter (and I agreed) didn't want to work with them after they never apologized for the horrible voice message and we offered to pay them for what service they provided up till that time and to please reimburse us a fair portion of what we had prepaid when she was a sophmore. They spoke with us once and after finding out what we wanted refused to call us back (although promises were made) and wouldn't reply to any correspondence made by my husband or I. Don't be fooled, you can get merit money without their assistance and there are other companies that are way less expensive. And spread the word to beware of Lana and Bill Wally. They are nice when they are asking for your money but if you don't agree on something they won't hesitate to have all ethical practices fly out the door.

I was among the top 5% of my graduating class. They asked me to apply to schools much below my caliber, where I was clearly a candidate for colleges like Ivy leagues. Bill and Lana Wally have no professionalism. Bill Wally shouted at me over the phone because I was asking the essay-reader for too much feedback. The essay-reader furthermore does not help whatsoever--she is unable to provide help for churning out essay ideas, and just rearranges sentences, some even grammatically incorrect! My own mother, an English teacher, shook her head at the edits. Their conditions also change dramatically--they first guarantee that they'll help any siblings free of charge, and will help you with graduate admissions also free of charge. However, when the time came for my own sibling to apply, they denied help, saying they needed you to refer them to other customers. Terms and conditions are not steadfast in his organization. My younger sibling with similar SAT scores and GPA, was admitted to drastically better schools without any help! No help is better than Aid 101 with Bill and Lana Wally. I was admitted in engineering to UC Berkeley, and attended the school. This school is ranked higher than even MIT and Stanford in some engineering disciplines, suggesting that Aid 101 did NOT help in achieving results in the private school sector. Run away!
