Update: SFUSD is teaching a new core curriculum for math. My third grader is being introduced to this now and it is not the standard math that we all grew up learning. It is also not the standard math that the Mathnasium centers are teaching. Our son has made incredible progress in math and he is engaged and enjoys his time here-in less than a year he's already past his grade level math (if you were using standard math criteria). When I realized that how he was being taught math at school was not aligned with how he was learning the material at Mathnasium, I reached out to the center Director, Jessica, and I shared with her some of the slides our teacher provided us at back to school night showing examples of how math was being taught now. (It has evolved and seems more robust). She informed me that she already spoke to her team (since other parents had reached out too) and said they will be pivoting their instruction method to align more with what the school district is doing. I am so impressed and pleased that they are adapting to the change. I have all the confidence that they will be able to support our son and his continuing success. He really likes math and tells us all the time that he wants to be successful. It has been a great investment. Our child has been going to Mathnasium for a little over 2 years, and it has turned around their attitude toward math. Before we signed up, math homework resulted in tears and our child would freeze on tests. We did not want our child to develop an aversion to math, so we decided to "outsource" it. Over the last two years, our kid has gone from crying about math, to being neutral about it or even enjoying it. Our kid loves the Judah location's tutors as they have been patient and flexible. Jessica is so sweet with the students and works closely with parents to ensure students' needs are being addressed. Regarding grades, our child went from a consistent "working toward standard" to earning an A on their most recent report card. Our 7 year old son has been going to Mathnasium since last school year. Here is what he has to say about the program. "It is really fun! They have this system where every worksheet that you complete earns a star, and each worksheet adds up to cards that you can exchange for prizes. Another cool part is when you first go you do a test. And that test, if you get pretty high you get to move up in a level. Lastly, all the people there are really nice and you don't have to go at the same time on the same day which makes it really easy." My daughter hates math. There is no way around it. Mathnasium has made it a bit less painful for her. The staff led by Jessica are very committed and encouraging. My daughter has really improved her math skills over the last six months, and has gained much more confidence with her skills. My son, a high school junior, received math tutoring from this location. We are extremely satisfied with the tutoring and staff. I would highly recommend this location. My son has always struggled in school and especially in math. My son also has low confidence and anxiety. Jessica, the center director, is awesome and a valuable asset to this center. She is so kind, patient, understanding and accommodating. She was very receptive and seemed to understand the needs of my son. She was able to assign a tutor who she thought would be a good fit for him. Richard, the tutor, was awesome and was able to make a connection with my son.
