Skip the Tour--Just a Sales Trap We joined the Marie's & Co Joya de Mexico excursion from our hotel as a cheap way to get to Playa del Carmen--we'd done it before but it's a free ride to Playa and from our hotel would have been a lot of money for 3 people. The tour includes a stop at a "silver jewelry factory" and a tequila tasting, which is really just a sales pitch. We skipped the tasting since we don't drink tequila and wandered around the flea-market-style area instead--everything was ridiculously overpriced! A small cat statue was going for $25 USD, honestly not even worth $5. The jewelry shop was the same as before--overpriced pieces and the same false claim that their silver "doesn't tarnish." I bought two pairs of earrings on this same tour two years ago, and both tarnished. If you're just after a free ride to Playa del Carmen, this will get you there, but the "tour" portion is a waste of time. read more

We stopped here as part of a Tequila tasting tour with a group of 4 people. We were greeted with a traditional welcome dance and then split from our group into pairs to tour the jewelry shop. Apparently our friends were kicked out once they made it clear that they weren't buying any jewelry. They were escorted to the front of the store outside and told they had to stay. Our couple experience wasn't like that -- Jose was very pleasant and took us all around the shop explaining different things about the various jewels and crystals. When that was done it was time for tequila tasting ! We took a small cart to the building next door where the Matis family sells tequila and were given Gabriel as a host. Gabriel was amazing, he clocked our tastes quickly and was able to make great suggestions based on everyone in the group. We tried all 17 tequilas and couldn't resist the coffee, pomegranate, kiwi and guava flavors. They had a special so we got the medium bottles with more tequila for less than the gift box price. All in all Gabriel made this portion very fun! For the jewelry store, I'd give the experience 3.5 stars but the tequila tasting side was 5 out of 5! Scam alert! Tasting experience was nice but it went south after that. I decided on a ceramic ring shaped bottle - I was told I was buying anejo tequila but it's actually "licor de agave anejo" which seems to be some sort of flavored tequila at best. Definitely false advertising. My connecting flight was in Houston and the TSA security machine is too small to verify this type of odd-shaped bottle and so I had to go back out and pay $80 to check it. I bought a 2nd bottle (which I now see is "liquor de agave reposado") and because I bought 2 $200 bottles, the salesperson said he would include an extra bottle for free and immediately bubble wrapped it and included it in my bag. This bottle turned out to have a broken cap and leaked everywhere. Additionally, the bottle is a flavored kiwi drink and I'm allergic to kiwi. Oh, and it actually wasn't free - it was 969 pesos. It was dumb for me to not check the receipt but I wasn't counting on being lied to and cheated. I tried to reach out to the company itself but couldn't figure out to do so - I'd really a refund for this extra charge as I never would have paid money for something I'm allergic to and never agreed to do so. I had to get my resort to reluctantly schedule transportation for me back to the store. I don't know why that was so difficult but Matiese worked it out to send me private transportation. I went back to the store and they fixed the ring. I asked them to tighten the setting and they did, no questions asked. Then the manager approached me, he remembered me from the day before, and presented me with a free necklace for the inconvenience. Cheapish necklace, but SUCH a nice gesture. I was impressed once again. At the end of the day, I spent $180 on a cheap ring I could have gotten for $50 at kohls. But it was an experience for me. I specifically am impressed that they answered so quickly. And impressed they got me individual transportation just to bring me back. Also, no fuss at all replacing the stone. I asked what would I do when I'm back home in the states and they said that I could mail it back to be fixed, but the manager also said that if I let them know I am in the states they can even try and find a local jeweler to help me free if charge. Deceitful liars. Scammers. BEWARE! DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM THEM!! I was brought to this jewellery store as a part of an excursion, shopping on 5th ave in Playa Del Carmen, provided to Sunwing. We weren't told what jewellery store we're going to so we weren't able to check reviews prior to going there, which i wish i was able to do. Otherwise there's no way I'd spend a penny there. When you go there, it's a large, air-conditioned store, which looks credible and professional. After taking us through the store and trying to sell us pieces we had no interest in, the sales person showed us what we were told is a silver ring with a stone called Zultanite. She showed us that it changes colour when in different light, and further explained to us that the stone is very rare and comes from a mine only found in Turkey. It is not very popular yet so the prices are more reasonable, but similar to Alexandrite, the value in the future will go up, especially once it becomes more well know and because of how rare it is. Therefore, purchasing Zultanite would be a good investment. She even suggested changing the setting from silver to gold in the future, as it would be worth doing so. I saw a ring that I liked and my husband decided to purchase it for me for my upcoming birthday. Our trip ended and we returned back home and I began to research more about Zultanite. I wore my ring but began to notice that it mainly only changed between 2 colours, and not 3 colours as i had read about when i had done my research. I decided to further check with chat gpt and discovered that my stone was FAKE! It wasn't a genuine stone as I was told! I contacted the company via Instagram, and they stated that all of their silver jewelry was lab-created and that i should have known that. I explained that their sales person lied to me throughout the entire sale, and even went into detail about the suggestions and everything she had told me, but they turned it all around and took 0 accountability. Eventually they stopped responding to my messages. I have started an investigation with Mastercard and hope to get my money back. So my friends and I went to Cancun. Girls trip 2022 However we had plans on going to Playas del Carmen but it was around 40 minutes away. So the hotel we had stayed in had invited us to go to a jewelry shop. No pressure into buying stuff but our next stop from this jewelry palace was Playas del Carmen. This is by far the biggest scam and waste if time. It is very overpriced old lady costume jewelry. The guy who was our "guide" was pushy, Rude, and insulting. When I said no to buying this crap he then showed me the cheaper stuff thinking I was poor. Then told me a good mother would buy her kids jewelry! What a jersey trying to guilt me into buying!. This was part of a free shopping trip from the resort so I had no choice going here. But after looking at everything with our guide and firmly saying no and getting irritated, I left the room to sit in the lobby on a bench waiting for my group to finish. After the horrible day I was having some tequila was definitely needed so I tasted enough to let the anger of the jewelry store fade. She picked up on my preferences very quickly and showed several pieces that are my style. Purchased some rings as replacements for our wedding bands and absolutely love mine. Also got a matching set of coloring changing stones for my daughter. Then went next door for some tequila tasting and souvenir shopping. All staff was very nice and made us feel welcomed. Run - do not walk - RUN away from this store. I'm not going to weigh in on the value of the jewellery, or the high-pressure sales tactics (which there are - but I took it as entertainment). The reason you should NOT purchase anything here is, quite simply, they steal your money. I decided this would be an okay tour because it was included as part of my package with Sunwing Vacations. I figured this meant it was at least safe to shop there, though buyer beware re quality. I was therefore quite surprised - and now just angry and frustrated - to discover they scammed me. I made a purchase and used my credit card to complete the transaction. However, the first time the cashier put the purchase through she said the line went down and the transaction was cancelled. Looking at the credit card machine I couldn't see anything, so the story seemed legitimate. I used another of their machines and this time the charge went through. However, when I go home I discovered the original transaction did go through and they had now charged me twice for the purchase. I've spent the last month trying to get a refund, but all they do is stall and say "they're looking into it - and we're sorry". They take days, even weeks, to respond to my emails. They ask for my contact information but then don't reach out. They ask for the same details (copy of the receipt, etc.) again and again. Quite frankly, they're just stalling and attempting to complete the theft of my money. So do yourself a favour - do not go near this place, and if you have the misfortune of being there, do not, under any circumstances, purchase anything. I even bought a piece of color changing stone (which by the way is totally just colored glass) I paid $150 for it. we enjoyed the cenotes so we purchased this tour again for Friday July 22 2022 we wasted our last day of vacation knowing we would need to do the jewelry and tequila shop again. this time we did not purchase anything and there for Matisse company refused to take us to the cenotes and instead sent us back to Hotel. We got the free tour to Tulum. I briefly remembered reading about this in hotel reviews. When we got to the shop we had a nice guy as a salesperson. I was peasantly surprised that they were not pushy at all. I did Not expect to purchase anything.. but both my mom and I got rings with the changing Mayan stone or whatever. We had to get them sized and didn't want the other people to wait for us so we left on the tour and the sales person promised he would deliver the rings to our hotel the next day personally. And as soon as I saw my ring I thought that the stone was much smaller then what I picked in the store. My ring was called Martini Glass and I guess I got Half a glass. I was so saddened because I was really looking forward to having this beautiful memory of a trip with my mom. I didn't want to waste more time going back to the store (although I almost wish I did). My suggestion is TAKE PICTURES OF YOUR RING from all angles when you try it on (I wish I did). And I would also demand them sizing it in front of my eyes. My mother always said that nothing in this world is for free so when the resort tour salesperson offered a free drive to the mall, with the disclaimer about stopping at a jewelry store - I already knew what I was walking into. I love costume jewelry though. They had a really beautiful selection. Initially I wasn't going to buy anything until I saw a ring that caught my eye. I stuck firm to what I was willing to spend and the salesman came down. I negotiated a price for my friend as well. Neither of us paid over $100 for our rings and they gave us each a pretty necklace. Guy was nice though. He let us walk around and didn't push. Like someone else mentioned, the jewelry store stop is followed by an offer to take you to a Mercado so you can buy souvenirs. Vidanta Resorts gave us this "free" trip for attending their time share presentation and it was described as a jewelry factory tour. I expected to see a demo of jewelry making, but what we got was a short presentation on the jewelry they make, a description of the alloying materials that make up the jewelry then a sales presentation. Most of the jewelry we saw were made of silver alloyed with Rhodium and Palladium. Because of that the metal does not tarnish and is more durable. This is indeed a factory and most of the rings we saw were hand made. Since my wife lost her wedding band a long time ago I asked if they had any around. We were presented with a few and found a design we just loved, so we bought a matching set. They showed us a few more pieces of jewelry with gems we have never seen before. If you are not into these trinkets, or you are not in the market for one, save yourself a trip as there really isn't much to see or do. They also sell Turkish rugs, decorative glass lamps and watches. On the left side of the jewelry store is a tequila outlet and tasting room. The people in this place are very enthusiastic about their tequilas and boast that theirs were made from the blue agave cultivated in Jalisco. They are more than willing to let you taste some of their samples and you don't have to purchase. read more

Our resort ( Secrets Capri) offered a free " tour". We were taken to this dungeon where We were paired with the sales lady that pushed us into buying jewelry and made us believe that the gemstones they sale are genuine. My husband and I decided to purchase these two rings for my Mom and his mom. The sales lady told us that this particular gem is what the Mayans used in their jewelry and told us it was called " Kortis" aka Mayan stone. With all the amazing discounts and factory price we got both rings for $331 USD. Once we stepped outside my husband decided to google search " Kortis/ the Mayan" stone nothing came up. At this point we are both skeptical so we go back and ask the lady what it is called in English. She goes and asks her manager and he tells her that it is " csarite". We searched up and find out that this particular stone is native to Turkey ONLY. We are like " there is no way the Mayans traveled to Turkey to get this gemstone, something is not adding up". We looked up reviews for this place online and saw that someone was sold this particular stone at this shop and it ended up being GLASS. My husband took back the rings but they wouldn't return it. The store manager was telling us that he is going to launch this stone in California in Feb or 2019 ( yeah right). After all the hassle we were able to return these " gemstones, that the Mayan used". Please do not go to any of the "free tours" offered by your resort (there is no such thing as a free lunch) and most importantly do no purchase anything from these scammers. read more

Yes, we to went on free tour to Matis factory and yes we too found salespeople very friendly but stay glued to you and can't just walk around easily. But most of Mexican resort tourist places have pushy salespeople, so get over it, you'll never see them again. This place is massive and has everything jewelry. Traditional designs to ones I've never seen before. I purchased a silver ring for my husband. And for free, put in a small green stone into the setting and sized it. A one of a kind piece and all done while we waited. Yes, you play the game with their pricing... but I did not feel gouged with the price of ring, $107. Its unique and special. No jewelry company around us would do that. Heck, to size a ring up is $100 or more. The ring my husband bought for me was so different and unique I had to have it! So, I guess, don't go here if you don't care to drool on the goodies. Our charming sales guy happily showed us things and did mention all for fun (even in the over the top opal room). Also mentioned their were items for $10. We didn't care about the leather goods, watches or knick knacks to dust, albeit beautiful and locally crafted. We received certification papers for the jewelry on site and are many facilities state side should there be an issue. The tequila 'factory' was sampling of it mostly. Our lady gladly explained and we could have whatever we wanted to try. And yes, then buy. Do note... vanilla sold there is 4x the cost then duty free shop at airport. Airport also sells tequila, but not all those fun flavors. Very expensive shop. Could sample chocolate too, but that is not highlighted by staff like the expensive tequila is. Yep, no ac. Did not go into city as part of tour. Was told we had 2 hours of free time and then go back on shuttle. Two hours to do what? More shopping and dining? Didn't want to shop and could eat for free at resort. Is the city trip to Playa de Carmen full of begging children like other Mexican towns full of white tourists?
