I went to this cute souvenir shop near the place we were staying in Akumal (they have another…read morelocation in Cancun that is just as cute). I purchased 2 pieces of art that I love and it was fun to look at all the other vibrant and electric items and displays. The tshirts at re unique and not over the top expensive. I'd recommended this a must stop of something cute to take home.

I did my research for a place to shop near Akumal Bay that sells real Mexican handmade art and…read moregifts....so I learned about Mexicarte and we headed straight over. Luckily, this little gem is very easily accessible and not hard to find (due to the pink exterior paint!). I hate those shops where the employees are hunting you down, basically forcing you to buy mass-produced items at ridiculous costs. We wanted a place where we could feel good about our purchases. Mexicarte sells all handmade items by artists throughout Mexico. It's almost like a fair-trade store. You leave feeling good about the money you just spent, and can come back home bearing gifts with a story behind them. Mexicarte has the prettiest, brightest, and most unique gifts in every corner of the store. We actually had to come back a few times because we kept comparing all the other shops to this one, and just wanted to spend our money here. From day of the dead items, skulls, crosses, to handbags, jewelry, wall art, clay art, you name it. Everything is handcrafted with such care and detail, you can see the love the artists put into it. Everything is priced very fair. You can find gifts for any budget, we brought back a couple little turtle figurines for about $1.50 USD for example...and great quality! I love how helpful the employees are, and can provide the backstory to all the items they sell. They let you roam around freely, and don't pressure you into buying anything. Parking? Not so sure. We stayed at Akumal Beach Resort, it took us 10 minutes to walk up the beach here. You will see the Akumal Dive Shop, walk through to the back of the Dive Shop and you will see Akumal Plaza. It's a bright pink stand-alone building. You can't miss it. Happy shopping! :)

We came here to visit the sea turtle sanctuary as part of our tour through Cancun adventures…read more The dive center itself is cute. They had bathrooms with showers as well as outdoor showers. I did not appreciate the requirement to wear a life jacket in shallow water to snorkel with the turtles. The amount of people in the snorkeling areas was way too much. People were kicking up sand, flailing in the water and pushing people (me) to get in front of where any turtles were. It was extremely disappointing. The only reasons I got any photos was because I have a GoPro on a stick. I would NOT do the turtle thing again. I would however go scuba diving. That seemed like they took out small groups on small boats so it wouldn't be overcrowded.

This is an efficiently-run dive operation, and also offers a lot of group snorkeling opportunities…read more We dove with ADS through Blue Experience Diving, and we were pleased with the facility and the dive sites offered. The boats are small, with room for 8 or 9 divers. Back roll entries are required, as these boats aren't large enough for a dive platform. The boat captains were very good and able to deal with both calm and rough water efficiently. They also helped carry gear when needed, and helped divers deal with gear as they got on and off the boats. I observed ADS dive staff working with student divers, and they seemed patient and thorough (I'm a dive instructor myself, so I can recognize when other dive pros are doing a good job). Safety was a high priority. Overall, a great experience and we were glad to have a chance to dive with Blue Experience Diving and the Akumal Dive Shop.

That's when I glanced over and spotted this gem! I had never heard of Pineda Covalin before so I decided I'd Google the store before walking the 30 feet to check them out in person :) Low and behold what do I spot, gorgeous silk scarves. Honestly, the beautiful male and female models standing outside of their door also did the trick at catching my eye. I was curious! Do these two stunning individuals work for this store or are they possibly fellow travels looking like they just stepped off of the runway. Hey, models are abundant these days in Cancun - with everyone visiting Tulum I wasn't quite sure. Now, I know! They were models and however much they get paid it worked to lure me in and make a purchase. I walked over to check out the goods and loved the friendly service and introduction to the line. Created by two designers Cristina Pineda and Ricardo Covalin the lines purpose is to share the richness of Mexico traditions through its products. I really liked several designs but ended up selecting a very beautiful bright piece that looks great against a tan ;) They also made sure to ask if I wanted the tax refund form which was nice. Before boarding my flight I went over to submit this paperwork. Tax free shopping for visitors is always a plus. They accept USD and pesos but since I was fresh out of pesos I paid in dollars. Save your time and don't waste your pesos on garbage, if you are looking for a beautiful reminder of your Mexican vacation Pineda Covalin is a great store. I look forward to looking up the line in the future for other new designs. You can say they are the Hermes of Mexico ;) Luxury silk at its finest.

They're big on t-shirts around here, where they mix Mayan motifs into western imagery and logos. The locally made jewelry looked to be silver and they had a lot of different things that'll end up on shelf somewhere eventually. They have some local liquors which I'd never heard of, and some chocolate liquor that could be interesting. The hammocks were shown to be of superior quality to those sold in the town square. These have four or five different strands of nylon string, while the ones out there on the sidewalk are just two, and can't handle the weight. Hey! What are you saying?! The store took dollars or pesos - you get a better price with pesos. All the prices were clearly marked, so no need to haggle over things. I'd imagine they'd still be willing to do some haggling anyhow. The prices seemed to be a bit higher than any of the street vendors we'd seen, but these were of the higher qualities of stuff. The clerks were most welcoming, and answered all of our questions about their merchandise.
