The twist here is- at the back of the shop a young man (25 years) just recently opened a small cocktail stand. He is truly a joy to chat with, he is loving making his dream come true and experimenting in his own take mixology blending some unique flavors on his own. Definitely give him a try! Skip the Tour--Just a Sales Trap…read more We joined the Marie's & Co Joya de Mexico excursion from our hotel as a cheap way to get to Playa del Carmen--we'd done it before but it's a free ride to Playa and from our hotel would have been a lot of money for 3 people. The tour includes a stop at a "silver jewelry factory" and a tequila tasting, which is really just a sales pitch. We skipped the tasting since we don't drink tequila and wandered around the flea-market-style area instead--everything was ridiculously overpriced! A small cat statue was going for $25 USD, honestly not even worth $5. The jewelry shop was the same as before--overpriced pieces and the same false claim that their silver "doesn't tarnish." I bought two pairs of earrings on this same tour two years ago, and both tarnished. If you're just after a free ride to Playa del Carmen, this will get you there, but the "tour" portion is a waste of time.

Apparently our friends were kicked out once they made it clear that they weren't buying any jewelry. They were escorted to the front of the store outside and told they had to stay. Our couple experience wasn't like that -- Jose was very pleasant and took us all around the shop explaining different things about the various jewels and crystals. When that was done it was time for tequila tasting ! We took a small cart to the building next door where the Matis family sells tequila and were given Gabriel as a host. Gabriel was amazing, he clocked our tastes quickly and was able to make great suggestions based on everyone in the group. We tried all 17 tequilas and couldn't resist the coffee, pomegranate, kiwi and guava flavors. They had a special so we got the medium bottles with more tequila for less than the gift box price. All in all Gabriel made this portion very fun! For the jewelry store, I'd give the experience 3.5 stars but the tequila tasting side was 5 out of 5! If you're okay with being hard-sold on jewelry the experience is worth it for the tequila! Thank you Gabriel !

I turned to my right and noticed Lolita Lolita, a gorgeous boutique with lots of flickering candles. I wandered over and asked the employee if it was the candles that smelled so good, but she told me it was actually their incense. Instant sale! This incense smells like copal and I love having something in my home that can transport me back to vacation on scent alone! Aside from candles and incense, Lolita Lolita had some cute bohemian beachwear, jewelry, skincare products and other accessories. There is a very sensual vibe to the store that is reflected in their social media as well. Also, they ship, so you can browse their products online and place an order. We may visit those oversized souvenir shops and look at all their goodies and "maybe, just maybe" we'd pick up something rather useless like a shot glass or a bandana with "F Trump" printed on it... but normally it's all just junk. Normally we want something to remember our trip and not crap... jewelry usually does the trick for my Marisol. Here in Playa Del Carmen, there is 5TH AVE... plenty of those shit stores but there are plenty of street vendors with silver and leather goods and deals can be made but it's work; lucky for me, I had Marisol and Michelle to handle the purchases on the last visit (Marisol for translation and Michelle to hammer the vendors). BUT sometimes you come across a vendor that is just easy to deal with... bringing my sales team (Marisol and Michelle) isn't even necessary. We first came across the adorable street booth (more like a side of the road kiosk along 5TH AVE)... constructed from reused wood and painted a light turquoise color, the distressed booth has a sign painted with the store name "HIPPIE MAR" is colorful, hippy-like font. And the shop is loaded up with wall art, headdresses, purses, other knick-knacks and a little bit of jewelry (but the jewelry wasn't out; we asked and she just happened to have some). We were on our way to dinner but really glad we decided to stop and take a quick peek because in addition to the tiny-booth/shop looking so cute, the girl that owned and ran the booth was extremely welcoming and didn't give us crazy up front prices that you were forced to negotiate from... she gave a price for some toe-rings, we countered but with reasonable numbers and we agreed at a fair price... Both parties parted pleased !
