Melo & Autumn finally feeling comfy at MHCH
    Ella A.

11.1.23 - 11.16.23 - First time ever boarding our two girls. My husband and I couldn't travel for many years because we just couldn't find a trustful sitter. With my parents aging, we didn't want the responsibilities to fall on them any longer and that's what moved us to hunt for the best cat hotel in the Bay Area for our 2 spoiled furbabies. After years and years of searching, we narrowed it down to Kitty Chateau(SF) and Mod Cat Hotel(Oakland), which sadly, did not work out for us. We were looking for a place that allowed our girls to feel at home (not confined like a prison), a place that would give them personal attention (not pay extra for cuddle times), someone who would be sensitive towards their special needs (not fill out a bunch of paperwork and go through an initiation process) and a place that would keep them safe (not co-exist and mingle with stranger cats). After reading some reviews at the Mod Cat Hotel, we came across Mau House Cat Hotel. Upon reaching out to MHCH via email, the owner, Julie, suggested that we check out the place in person and ask any questions or concerns during our visit. And that's exactly what we did. As overprotective/affectionate fur parents, we wanted the most biggest, brightest and safest room that'll keep them comfy for their long stay. And that room existed. Prices for each room varies, but additional cats are just $12/night. Stellar!! Each room also has a unique name and we opted in for the 2nd largest room, the "Hollyhock." 100 sqft that allows up to 5 cats. The largest room was the Sunflower at 120 sqft. up to 6 cats., but the Hollyhock was located towards the back of the building, with ample amount of natural light and a huge window that faced an army of pigeons. Hollyhock was the ultimate winner! Julie and her staff are such a wonderful bunch who absolutely loves cats. Such a calm and gentle demeanor that cats absolutely love and gravitate towards! We were so grateful that they really listened to our concerns and made sure our worries/anxieties were put to rest. Also, knowing how the hotel was she set up, it gave us peace of mind. Can't help but feel how thoughtful the set up is because each section would help serve a purpose for every individual cat and their needs. Whether they're social, shy, older in age, loves the light, enjoys the darkness - you name it, Julie thought of it and created a personal space for each visitor. Talk about hospitality! She provides the litter boxes, the litter, food/water bowls, cat furnitures, but we're also encouraged to bring something from home that they'll use and feel familiar with. While we were away, Julie sent us updates and photos when possible. As we've never boarded our girls with any strangers, it took several days for them to get used to. Tip: If it's your first time ever boarding your furbabies, we found it extremely beneficial to board them several times prior to the longer stay. By doing so, we felt it was less stressful on our girls. We booked 2n3d in September, 3n4d in October and 15n16d in November with the same room for consistency. It was well worth it because we were able to instill trust and faith in them that we'll be back and it gave the girls the opportunity to get to know Julie and her staff. Thanks to MHCH, my husband I were able to take a much needed long vacation. A huge part of us finally feel relieved knowing that we found MHCH because whenever we need a break or there's an emergency, we have a trustworthy place for our girls. Towards the end, Melo didn't want to leave Julie's side and Autumn came out of her comfort zone. Thank you Julie and team! We look forward to boarding our girls with you again in the near future!

THANK YOU, Julie! I went out of town for 10 days and needed lodging for my sweet boy. Julie was amazing from the start, great communication - answered all my questions and put my mind at ease. Her facility is very clean, she sent me updates and pictures of my boy while I was away - when I reached out to her, she made sure to get back to me in a timely manner. I last minute asked if there were outlets in the room & the room I originally booked didnt have any. Julie was super accommodating and got Oliver into a different room w/ an outlet. I am so thankful to have found Julie! 10/10 recommend!

Mau House is my go-to spot for boarding! Julie is incredibly thoughtful and accommodating, a true cat lover who caters to each cat's individual needs. The rooms are clean and spacious, outfitted with climbing furniture and hideaways. Each cat household is kept separate so there's no direct mingling among the guests, but they're given individual open door free roaming time each day. I always feel like I'm leaving my cat in good hands here!

Absolutely recommend this cat hotel. Julie and team are friendly and caring. The spacious sunny hotel rooms are perfect for my babies to roam around and play in. Most rooms have windows, high platforms for cats to hang out/sleep, litter box, bowl of water. I bring my own food and bowls. You can bring your own toys, blankets, other things from home that will bring comfort to your cats so it feels familiar to them. This is my second time boarding with Mau and I have a booking planned for next month as well. I've been to a few other places in the Bay Area but this hotel offers safe, clean, and loving environment away from other pets without cages. And flexible pick up/drop off times! Thank you Mau!

Quickly took to the soft cat nest that comes with the room (Rose).

Julie and her staff are wonderfully compassionate cat people. I researched many other cat boarding places in the area, many of which looked like "little cat jail cells." Thankful to have found Mau House's cage-free rooms. Julie gave me a pre-stay tour of the cat hotel and promptly answered our many questions. It was our first time boarding our kitty boys and we appreciated the care they put in to making sure they were well taken care of and keeping us in the know during their stay. Already booked future stays with them this year :)

Plenty of room to roam and climb

Ask the Community - Mau House Cat Hotel

Hello, what are the requirements to booking a room for my kittens? They are indoor cats and have not had any flea treatments. Thanks.

You need to show proof of vaccinations and have a flea treatment before you bring them. You can easily do it yourself.

About two or three weeks ago, they scheduled me for an initial assessment, where they would assess my dog and figure out the best place to put him. I told them my dog is very vocal but that is normal for his breed (hes a husky). The assessment went great, my dog did very well, and he stayed there for half a day. Additionally, I was told to get him the canine influenza vaccine, which I did. The week after, I scheduled him for doggy daycare to get him used to it. The visit went well. They told me that my dog did great. He was vocal at the beginning, but he settled in. I said great. Nothing else was said to the contrary. The week of my vacation, I check the portal. It said my dog was still on the boarding waitlist. I called to confirm that he would be boarded and checked to see if they saw his updated vaccine record. They placed me on hold for a while until the man who did the initial assessment came on. He informed me, much to my surprise, that since my dog is still anxious (he barks, which is his normal), they would not be able to board him until he has a few more visits. I am very disappointed at Metro Dog. I feel like my time and money were utterly wasted. I followed their protocol and got my dog used to this place, and they declined my boarding request at the last minute. I now have to scramble and see if I can find another boarder for vacation. I am also very disappointed at the lack of communication. If I had not called them to check, I would not have known that he was declined. I received no indication that he would not be able to board by Metro Dog. I wanted to love this place but I am so good on Metro Dog. I hope this review can help others and push this place to be more communicative, honest, and upfront with fellow clients and their fur babies.

She always runs right in when we drop her off and we can tell she has a lot of fun when we watch her on the webcam. Her latest stay was 2.5 weeks and while she was exhausted when we picked her up from playing so much she is very healthy and happy. In situations where our travel plans have delayed us in picking her up, they have always been incredibly kind and understanding. We started adding walks to her long stays so she gets some individual outside time in addition to all day inside playtime. I have nothing but good things to report about the Barkmont and they make being a dog owner in the Bay so much easier. I also think they are just really good people, I heard they now partner with local pet rescues to give their foster dogs some socialization and love. Makes us feel good supporting them. Picture is from home but the boarder in question.

At the other facility, Ollie for the first time displayed separation anxiety. The first time he did so, I thought he was just a bit nervous. The second time he had that look in his eyes that said, "do not leave me." Recently, we returned to the Barkmont. There was and continues to be a completely different response from Ollie. HE CANNOT WAIT TO GET IN THE DOOR AT THE BARKMONT. He absolutely loves the staff - professionals who are all very loving, kind and tender with the dogs. I should add that Ollie is somewhat of a higher maintenance dog - a 2-year-old 80 lb Samoyed who is an attention hound. I really like that the Barkmont has cameras so that you can log into to see how your fur baby is doing during a stay. The dogs are constantly monitored by staff who are in the various rooms - to ensure that no one gets out of line. Alot of additional services - meals, walks, bath etc. Kirk and Amanda - the owners both love dogs. They have provided in my opinion the VERY BEST DAYCARE FACILITY in the Bay Area.
