Clean facility with spacious amenities, but major holiday staffing concerns forced us to leave. We truly wanted to love this facility. Over time, we appreciated how clean the environment was, the spacious accommodations for extended travel, and receiving regular photo updates of our cat while we were away. However, an experience this past holiday season revealed a fundamental issue with holiday staffing and animal care that we simply cannot overlook. After returning home early from vacation, we contacted the owner in the early afternoon to ask about picking up our cat. Following some back-and-forth, she begrudgingly agreed--only to reveal that no one was actually working. She had to call an off-duty employee to see if they could drive over and meet us at the building. This interaction made it alarmingly clear that no staff was scheduled for the second half of the day, and it left us with serious doubts as to whether anyone had been onsite at all that morning. While we understand it was a holiday, clients pay a full daily rate with the expectation of continuous monitoring, timely medication, and basic care. Knowing the building was left unstaffed on a holiday is deeply concerning from a safety and welfare standpoint. As much as we enjoyed the facility's space and cleanliness, we cannot justify paying boarding fees for an unstaffed facility. Because of this, we can no longer recommend them and will not be returning. We strongly advise other pet parents to ask explicit questions about holiday staffing before booking, especially if your cat has any special needs or is in need of daily visits and TLC and as our cat most certainly is while he's being boarded. read more

I have a super shy one-year-old British Shorthair. I hired a Rover sitter the first time I left her and had a terrible experience. After doing a ton of research on cat boarding in the Bay Area, I found Mau, and I'm so grateful I did. After just two stays, they've managed to bring my shy girl out of her shell. The patience and care everyone has shown in letting her get comfortable at her own pace has meant the world to me. I'll be recommending them to anyone looking for cat boarding. Finding Mau House has been a life-saver. We have two elderly indoor cats that can no longer be left alone at home for long periods, so finding Julie's place has been amazing. In fact, when returning from a two week trip recently (our pets' first stay away from home), the two kitties looked and behaved as relaxed and happy as we could have hoped for and more. The staff took care of the custom food and feeding schedule, as well as made sure that the post-surgical collar stayed on the entire time; and our cat's head wounds healed up by the time we returned. 11.1.23 - 11.16.23 - First time ever boarding our two girls. My husband and I couldn't travel for many years because we just couldn't find a trustful sitter. With my parents aging, we didn't want the responsibilities to fall on them any longer and that's what moved us to hunt for the best cat hotel in the Bay Area for our 2 spoiled furbabies. After years and years of searching, we narrowed it down to Kitty Chateau(SF) and Mod Cat Hotel(Oakland), which sadly, did not work out for us. We were looking for a place that allowed our girls to feel at home (not confined like a prison), a place that would give them personal attention (not pay extra for cuddle times), someone who would be sensitive towards their special needs (not fill out a bunch of paperwork and go through an initiation process) and a place that would keep them safe (not co-exist and mingle with stranger cats). After reading some reviews at the Mod Cat Hotel, we came across Mau House Cat Hotel. Upon reaching out to MHCH via email, the owner, Julie, suggested that we check out the place in person and ask any questions or concerns during our visit. And that's exactly what we did. As overprotective/affectionate fur parents, we wanted the most biggest, brightest and safest room that'll keep them comfy for their long stay. And that room existed. Prices for each room varies, but additional cats are just $12/night. Stellar!! Each room also has a unique name and we opted in for the 2nd largest room, the "Hollyhock." 100 sqft that allows up to 5 cats. The largest room was the Sunflower at 120 sqft. up to 6 cats., but the Hollyhock was located towards the back of the building, with ample amount of natural light and a huge window that faced an army of pigeons. Hollyhock was the ultimate winner! Julie and her staff are such a wonderful bunch who absolutely loves cats. Such a calm and gentle demeanor that cats absolutely love and gravitate towards! We were so grateful that they really listened to our concerns and made sure our worries/anxieties were put to rest. Also, knowing how the hotel was she set up, it gave us peace of mind. Can't help but feel how thoughtful the set up is because each section would help serve a purpose for every individual cat and their needs. Whether they're social, shy, older in age, loves the light, enjoys the darkness - you name it, Julie thought of it and created a personal space for each visitor. Talk about hospitality! She provides the litter boxes, the litter, food/water bowls, cat furnitures, but we're also encouraged to bring something from home that they'll use and feel familiar with. While we were away, Julie sent us updates and photos when possible. As we've never boarded our girls with any strangers, it took several days for them to get used to. Tip: If it's your first time ever boarding your furbabies, we found it extremely beneficial to board them several times prior to the longer stay. By doing so, we felt it was less stressful on our girls. We booked 2n3d in September, 3n4d in October and 15n16d in November with the same room for consistency. It was well worth it because we were able to instill trust and faith in them that we'll be back and it gave the girls the opportunity to get to know Julie and her staff. Thanks to MHCH, my husband I were able to take a much needed long vacation. A huge part of us finally feel relieved knowing that we found MHCH because whenever we need a break or there's an emergency, we have a trustworthy place for our girls. Towards the end, Melo didn't want to leave Julie's side and Autumn came out of her comfort zone. Thank you Julie and team! I absolutely LOVE Mau House! I was looking for a new place to board my 3 cats since my former facility sadly shut down during the pandemic. Before we made our first reservations, we scheduled a tour of the facility. It gave us immediate confidence in seeing the clean, spacious rooms with windows facing outside as well as enough toys to keep them happy. Julia is wonderful and so easy to work with. My two older girls are drama queens while my you my youngest (a boy) is an outgoing little guy. The staff easily handled their quirks and sent me updates when I asked. Most importantly, my cats were safe, well cared for and came back home completely happy. Their online reservation system is great and I love their more flexible drop off hours. We had an afternoon flight and were able to drop off the kitties early that morning. I'm ready to book their next stay and can't say enough about the wonderful care they received! read more

The first thing I noticed about Mau when I dropped off my cat was how clean it was. There was no smell of urine or even cats. Super, super clean. My cat was there for about 18 days, and while the cat probably wasn't happy, I was thrilled with the care that he received and the cleanliness of his room. I adopted a kitten July 2023 and had to take a trip in November 2023. My kitten is a particular fella and I didn't feel comfortable leaving him with friends or family. I wanted him to socialize with other cats. I reached out to Julie and she was super welcoming. I was able to tour the house before my kitten's stay. He enjoyed his stay and made a few fur friends. He has stayed there twice. Planning is easy and convenient. When we get home, he does get needy and vocal, which is completely normal. Forget every other cat hotel and only come here, it is VERY well worth it. EVERY penny. Julie is so kind, caring, and responsive and she made us feel at ease when boarding our cats for 2 weeks. She took very good care of them and they seemed completely comfortable in their environment. On top of it all, they have CAGE FREE ROOMS!! This was a must for us and it's unfortunate that there's so few options for cage free cat hotels. Keeping this in mind, they are pretty decently priced. I can't speak highly enough of this establishment. I've read so many horror stories of owners finding their cats traumatized from cat hotel, but you don't have to worry with Mau House. I've boarded my cats before where they back extremely dirty and it was evident they were stuck in their cages for the entire time with no one checking on them, however, Julie made sure both of our cats returned home completely clean and would promptly email us if she noticed any problems and always checked in before proceeding with any plan of action. Absolutely recommend this cat hotel. Julie and team are friendly and caring. The spacious sunny hotel rooms are perfect for my babies to roam around and play in. Most rooms have windows, high platforms for cats to hang out/sleep, litter box, bowl of water. I bring my own food and bowls. You can bring your own toys, blankets, other things from home that will bring comfort to your cats so it feels familiar to them. This is my second time boarding with Mau and I have a booking planned for next month as well. This place is fantastic. Julie is wonderful and does such a great job with both humans and cats. You can reserve spaces for the cats online which is incredibly convenient, and unlike other cat hotels, they only have rooms. So no small spaces for the kitties at all! I left my two kitties here when we were moving house. I got almost daily emails from Julie letting me know how they were doing. Basically they were super happy and sure, they were happy to see me when I picked them up and but I think were kind of annoyed that I didn't give them all of my attention all the time. Had a great experience with Mau House when we needed to board our three cats for a day to have a termite treatment done at our home. Julie made scheduling, drop off and pick up really easy, and invited me in to check out the spaces and stay with the cats a little while while they got acclimated. The spaces are really cute, they had adorable beds and windows where they could look out at a flock of pigeons. In the past we had a neighbor come by to feed our cats, but noticed they would do things like pee on our bed as what I assume was a sign of stress that we were gone. Second, the reservation process was informative and easy to follow. When I arrived at the facility, Julie came out to my car to help me. Throughout Beau's stay, she sent me photos and updates on his daily routine, the amount of food he was consuming, and any other particulars pertinent to my cat's stay. If I could give 10 stars I would! Julie, the owner, took in my sweet kitty for a few days during my family's move across the country. She sent me pictures and updates on how my cat was doing, worked with my vet to secure appropriate documentation for my cat's travel, and handled the hand-off to the pet transport (who will be bringing my cat across the country) with amazing attention to detail and good humor. Recently my two cats stayed at Mau House for five days/four nights. It was a terrific experience for them and for us! Julie was very welcoming and patient and gave us a pre-stay tour and explained the way the cat hotel works. She clearly loves cats and has a small staff who also enjoy working with felines. The rooms are a great amount of space for the cats and are thoughtfully put together so that they have great places for the cats to climb, explore, hide, and play, but they are also easy to keep clean and sanitary. Our two cats are very different and one loves to cuddle and play, while the other is grumpy and standoffish. I was worried about how they'd behave, but Julie and her team were very good with them and they came home possibly even happier than they had left. Even my grumpy kitty was calmer and happier. It was clear they'd been engaged and had felt safe and comfy. The price was very reasonable and payment and logistics were easy. We will definitely use Mau House again next time we need cat boarding. I can't say enough good things about Mau House. The owner Julie is responsive, compassionate, and clearly very experienced with cats. Lizzy the cat had lost her human, and we needed to board her until we could find her a new home. She had been through a lot, but came to feel safe and comfortable at Mau house after the most difficult of circumstances. Julie treated her like family, and sent us pictures to reassure us that the cat was adjusting ok. At one point, Julie had some concerns about Lizzy's health, and she offered to take her to the vet for a very fair hourly rate, if we were unable to. We were concerned about how to find kitty a new home. As it turned out, Julie and Lizzy bonded to the point that Lizzy got adopted as the Mau House mascot. Mau House really does love cats!
