We have been boarding our dog and sending her for daycare to the Barkmont for about 3 years now. It is a fantastic safe place for her and a good price given other options (many more expensive options don't even have playtime included!!). She always runs right in when we drop her off and we can tell she has a lot of fun when we watch her on the webcam. Her latest stay was 2.5 weeks and while she was exhausted when we picked her up from playing so much she is very healthy and happy. In situations where our travel plans have delayed us in picking her up, they have always been incredibly kind and understanding. We started adding walks to her long stays so she gets some individual outside time in addition to all day inside playtime. I have nothing but good things to report about the Barkmont and they make being a dog owner in the Bay so much easier. I also think they are just really good people, I heard they now partner with local pet rescues to give their foster dogs some socialization and love. Makes us feel good supporting them. This is an updated review. After getting my dog Ollie neutered - we returned to the Barkmont. I admit that I tried another daycare facility - with not good results. At the other facility, Ollie for the first time displayed separation anxiety. The first time he did so, I thought he was just a bit nervous. The second time he had that look in his eyes that said, "do not leave me." Recently, we returned to the Barkmont. There was and continues to be a completely different response from Ollie. HE CANNOT WAIT TO GET IN THE DOOR AT THE BARKMONT. He absolutely loves the staff - professionals who are all very loving, kind and tender with the dogs. I should add that Ollie is somewhat of a higher maintenance dog - a 2-year-old 80 lb Samoyed who is an attention hound. I really like that the Barkmont has cameras so that you can log into to see how your fur baby is doing during a stay. The dogs are constantly monitored by staff who are in the various rooms - to ensure that no one gets out of line. Alot of additional services - meals, walks, bath etc. Kirk and Amanda - the owners both love dogs. They have provided in my opinion the VERY BEST DAYCARE FACILITY in the Bay Area. read more

After a year or so with mixed results in the Bay Area, we began taking our dog, Cleo, to The Barkmont for daycare. We wanted a smaller, hands-on environment where Cleo would be able to socialize with dogs regularly. But also, be consistently observed to avoid things like dogs fighting or worry that they don't have enough water, etc. After a few years of weekly visits, The Barkmont has been a huge help to us. Knowing that we have a reliable daycare spot, Cleo has taken to it as well. She howls with excitement on the way to "school" (as we call it) and comes home pleasantly exhausted. In addition, their overnight services have been excellent and we're never concerned about how she's doing if we have to leave town for an evening. Wonderful service and caring staff! Our Olde a English Bulldog stayed with them for 3 weeks and they all took such great care of him. He's a high maintenance dog and we were very appreciative of their thorough work in keeping his wrinkles/folds clean and his bed cozy. They even labeled everything we gave them with blue tape and instructions for care. They were responsive to our texts and emails to check-in on how our dog was doing and even provided some photos for reassurance when requested. Their dog cameras are also a nice touch for owners who want to see what their dog is up to during the hours of 9am to 4pm. Drop off and pick up were straightforward and a breeze! My dog has been spending time at The Barkmont since 2021 (about 2.5 years) - primarily daycare, with a few stints of multi-day boarding. That's a lot of time, and by now we've established a huge amount of trust in the staff & owners. Whenever there's an issue (and these are inevitable since dogs can be so unpredictable), the people at The Barkmont have responded appropriately and been available for a discussion when it's needed. I love the cameras that let us see how our dog is doing throughout the day, and I appreciate how thoughtful they are in ensuring that the dogs are doing well with each other. My only word of caution to a new patron is that their online reservation system has a lot of "additional services" on offer, which makes it seem like you can set up a spa day for your dog by clicking a few buttons (and paying the associated fees). In pracice, though, the staff are typically prepared to do routine things during a given day, and may not be able to trim nails & perform training. Those things might be available on some days, but it is probably worth talking to the staff to ensure that it will be feasible on a given day. This is not a major issue, but caused us a bit of confusion initially. read more

We have been happy with The Barkmont. They are involved in the community and helping animals and were at an adoption day helping to support animals for adoption. They also have very convenient hours. The staff are friendly and professional. Their system lets me know when my dog is due for vaccines before even my vet alerts me, which is great. They are really on top of their stuff. They use a "fear free" technique when it comes to working with the dogs. When it comes to other add on services it is important to note that the prices are dependent on the dog - so I would ask for a quote first. read more

Unfortunately, Lana V. and Nina Z's reviews are absolutely correct. We can't speak for regular daycare for fully vaccinated dogs, but The Barkmont's puppy program is completely falsely advertised on their website. Do not be drawn in by the lower price tag, as what you pay for is what you get. DO NOT take your puppy here. Our 10 week old pup was taken out of his crate for only 8 minutes, 10 minutes, and 13 minutes, each time throughout the day, when we were told that they would be let out for at LEAST 20-30 minutes. He was also in his crate for 3 hours in the morning, when we were told it would be 1.5-2 hours max. We had to call them multiple times to ask what was going on, and they said "oops, they were going to let him out now." They also made several other excuses about the one other puppy that was there not being friendly with him, but we saw him in the afternoon playing just fine with them during the short durations that they were both out (have video evidence of this). There was one staff member in particular that was on her phone for pretty much the entire time she was in there (screenshot below, we also have video evidence of this for several minutes), and barely supervised. We also never saw the "training" that is advertised on their site, which included a long list of several desensitization/socialization line items. Our puppy came home at the exact same energy level he was when he went, which go figure, it's because he was only let out for less than 30 minutes total for the entire day. I really implore The Barkmont owners to do a much stricter audit of their staff and set strict timers for how long the puppies are out for this "program". If you cannot give puppies the socialization they need, then why offer it? We have since taken our business somewhere else that gives us way more peace of mind and lives up to their word. read more

I hate writing this review because I want to support local businesses in the area, but the Barkmont is currently extremely understaffed and based on interactions with the staff doesn't seem like a great place for young puppies. TLDR: their puppy socialization program is a barren room where they take the pups out for 10 minutes a time and leave them unattended for up to several minutes, they don't take accountability for mistakes, and a man (the owner?) told me if he did something to hurt my puppy or make her sick, he'd apologize and "if she died there, he'd apologize even more". I'm not taking my 4 month old puppy back. I signed my pup up for the Barkmont's "Puppy Socialization" program which per their website is a program where puppies would be socialized and exposed to things like people with grocery bags, desensitization CDs, moving objects like skateboards and vacuums, handling, and a training program. Like it says in Lana V.'s review in actuality, the puppies get put out in a barren room with one bed, a water bowl, and sometimes a toy like a ball. The staff would take my puppy out of her kennel for 10-15 minutes at a time, and then she's kenneled again for an hour plus. For half of her visits, she didn't have another puppy to play with which is no fault of the facility. The staff would let her out and just pet her for 10 minutes, throw a ball around, talk on the phone without paying attention to her, or take selfies with her. I don't expect constant attention, but I do expect more when she's only out for such short periods. Supposedly she got one ten minute training session a day, which I caught on camera once in one of her earliest sessions. They didn't always provide a report card at the end of the day. Not an ideal situation and not what they advertise, but I figured there was no harm in dropping her off there once or twice a month when I absolutely had to have her out of the house for a few hours. Today I had a really upsetting experience and won't be bringing her back. When I dropped her off in the morning, I told the woman who took her to please keep an eye on her as she eats poop. She said that wouldn't be a problem. When I tuned in to the puppy room webcam in the morning, I saw a large adult dog there that had defecated in the room and was left alone. He spent 15-20 minutes tracking it around the room before someone came back in and spot-cleaned it. They didn't mop the whole room before letting my puppy back out. The next time I tuned in I noticed a woman let her out and immediately left the room and her unsupervised. Unsurprisingly, she went to the bathroom and managed to eat all of it. I called in, and got the woman from the morning on the phone. She ran back in and apologized for what happened and that she had to run to the front to answer the phone. I was ready to go pick her up right then, but she said that they'd do a better job of keeping an eye on her so it wouldn't happen again. I believed her and decided to pick her up at the end of the day instead. When I tuned back in late afternoon, I noticed that she had been left in the room alone, again. She went to the bathroom again (this time she had an upset stomach) and I was horrified to see her eating it, like last time. I called back in and spoke with a gentleman who gave me an excuse and said it was no big deal. We talked in person when I picked her up and he was just combative, telling me that I should use a product so she doesn't eat her poop, and that "no one is perfect" without taking any sort of accountability. It was excuse after excuse -- they're busy for Thanksgiving, eating poop doesn't hurt the puppies, that it doesn't happen all the time, and if I don't like it to take her somewhere else. He wrapped up the conversation by letting me know that eating poop isn't dangerous for puppies (that's true about their own poop, but they had adult dogs defecating in the same room that day). If it made her sick or hurt her, he'd apologize. Then he said -- "if she died here, I'd apologize even more". That cold-hearted statement left me completely dumbfounded, and I had nothing else to add to the conversation. My point was that if they aren't able to accommodate my pup and what seemed like a reasonable request, they should have let me know from the get-go and I wouldn't have left her, instead of making several reassurances that they would keep a closer eye on her. I understand that it's the pandemic and everyone is having a hard time hiring, but if you're not able to have enough staff on hand to provide the service as listed, just close the program for the time being. Maybe this place is fine for adult dogs (even though the times I tuned in to the adult dog rooms about half the time there was no human supervising), but they aren't able to provide puppies with constant supervision without leaving them alone in the room for minutes at a time and don't take accountability for not following through on assurances. read more

You won't find a more caring and compassionate group than the wonderful team at The Barkmont. For the past several years they looked after our senior dog during workdays and overnight stays with more heart than we could have ever hoped for. He would gleefully hop through their door in the morning and was always happy and sufficiently tuckered out at pick-up. As our dog slowed with age, Kirk, Amanda, and their team made an extra effort to tend to his evolving needs, always going out of their way to ensure his safety and comfort. It has been several months since we lost our sweet pup, but we will never forget the kindness and thoughtful care that The Barkmont provided him throughout his golden years. I had a pretty bad experience hear with my dog serviced June 2023. We needed to find an alternative as our usual daycare was booked for when we needed to board our day. In order to board, the require the standard evaluation. They use the typical Gingr app all the other dog daycamp & boarding companies use in the Bay Area; scheduling is fairly easy. Parking is okay. They have a drop off section but it's very small so you have to find street parking which was limited during our pick up and drop off. The front door was not in use, we're not told that. We had to figure out ourselves that they had a back door. We rang the bell and took about a minute for us to get assistance. Someone came to the door and requested for some time -- seems pretty understaffed. After 3 minutes, we were helped. The staff took our dog, didn't ask for our dogs name, and was gonna take him back. We had to interrupt him as we had questions being our first time. We were disappointed that we were not given a tour and no expectations were given; we had to come with our questions: how long is camp, when is last pick up, what's the process, etc. We scheduled our dog to come in at 12p (earliest availability on Gingr App). 2 hours later we were given a call to pick up our dog. Apparently he didn't not pass his evaluation with the reason "he was scratching against the wall and seemed anxious". He was placed in a crate for the rest of the day until we picked him up. That was such a big surprise to us because we've taken our dog to 4 other daycare/boarding places and always passes with flying colors! We picked him up and asked for more info. We were instructed to email the manager for more feedback. Also they charged us for evaluation! The 4 other places he's passed never charged for first day, they were always complimentary evaluations with all day play. We were charged $60 for 2 hours of "anxious play" and crate time. I don't recommended. Our dog does exceptionally well and loves Happy Hound in West Oakland, I highly recommend! read more

[ Before Covid Review ] This is a long overdue review for this dog boarding facility/doggy daycare. My fiance and I were looking for a daycare for our husky, Kaya to go to and get all her energy out while we were both working and we luckily found this place. Prior before letting your dog into their daycare, they do want to do an assessment to make sure that your dog would be a good fit for their facility. This assessment I thought was great because they take your dog in for a couple hours and really see, is the dog shy? Should he/she be in the small dog or big dog group? Active or chill group? Is your dog a trouble maker? You guys get the deal. We brought our dog Kaya in when she was a couple months old, I want to say she was 5-7 months old and they really gave us insight into how she is as a dog. We were also able to get a tour of the facility beforehand to see how they operate and what is great is that unlike other doggy daycares, they have a maximum amount of animals in each group. We went to a previous daycare where there were 40 dogs in one room and only 1-2 attendants which made us really uncomfortable. At the Barkmont, expect only 10-12 dogs in each group and there is usually 2 people watching over. Not only do they offer daycare, but they also offer: training, boarding, and grooming. If you do daycare, you can drop off as early as 7am and pick up as late as 7pm; however, weekend time does change. If you board your animal there, they do have 24/7 staffing so your puppy is not alone during the night. If you're a doggy mom like me who wonders how my pup is doing, they have cameras for each area of their daycare so you can watch your dog play with other dogs. While we have had two incidents where our dog was attacked by other dogs, I will say that the owners of Barkmont took responsibility, informed us of the attack, actually dealt with the situation (either they separate the dogs from each other from that point on or even where the dog is not allowed back in), and even took our dog Kaya to a hospital to get treated- in the end I do trust Barkmont with our dog Kaya. With Covid happening right now, my fiance is able to work from home, but I can promise you guys that our dog Kaya does miss her doggy friends and human friends at the Barkmont. We hope to bring her back soon and let her enjoy being with her friends. If you want a doggy daycare where you want to feel that your dog is in safe hands, this is the place for you. I've been to a lot of daycare facilities and this is the only place I trust with my dog. They have responsible employees, owners and the owners really ensure that all staff gets proper training. Our large chocolate lab spent some quality time at Barkmont. We loved it there. The staff are THE friendlies, love their guests, and are so communicative. Our last time at the Barkmont, our lab was just there for the day this time around. He, unfortunately, was too excited/anxious (and admittedly nearing the end of his life) and his heart and lungs couldn't take the excitement. The staff cared for him in the best way possible while he was a bit in distress and they kept us in the know of his status throughout the day. They told us what their plan of action was until we got there and kindly asked if we wanted anything done differently. The Barkmont and its loving staff....ya can't beat it. I am really thankful for and appreciative of this place. I have 3 dogs, and two of them regularly go to daycare at The Barkmont. My third dog is sort of a hopeless little wreck, but she is small and easy to deal with being 7 years old. My two one-year-old boys, a Frenchie and an American Pit Bull Terrier, however, sometimes have me at my witts' end when I am trying to do zoom meetings or working on a project with lots of concentration. Enter this amazing place, where they both love to go! What I like most about The Barkmont is that every single time I check in on my dogs on the webcam, there is a caretaker interacting with them and their buddies. Giving scritches, hugs, playing, getting down on the floor with them. My boys love the handlers just as much as the other dogs that are there. Kirk, the owner, has talked with me several times when I needed clarification on protocol or had questions. Very helpful and friendly and down-to-earth. It is a load off of my mind that this place exists and that the people there are dedicated to what they do. I was wary of bringing my Pitbull at first, since they are subject to such discrimination, and also because he was sort of a "wilting flower" type that seemed easily frightened or introverted, but they knew exactly how to handle him there, and I am so proud of how good he is there and how he plays with others. I found this great spot for my dogs, and I am never giving it up! If you are one of those people who are overly concerned about your babies, like I am, The Barkmont is a gem and will be more than helpful to you and a great resource for your dogs. read more

I don't have enough words to express how much we love The Barkmont! Our Puppy Houston is a bit of a nervous and anxious puppy but The Barkmont has given him so much one-on-one love and training, and they've gotten him to break out of his shell. On day 2 of puppy day care Houston started warming up to people AND other dogs in the day care AND at home! After every puppy daycare day, we see huge improvements and positive changes in our little Houston! We love to watch the live streams of him playing with other pups, it makes us so happy! When Houston first started the puppy socialization classes I would ask my partner to drop him off because I'm super attached to my puppy and get emotional at drop offs, but my partner started telling me how happy Houston gets in the morning during drop off that I had to see for myself. I went to drop him off this morning and Houston could not jump out of my arms and into the handlers arms fast enough! I felt a little offended hahaha but in the best way possible. I love that Houston love's going there! It makes me so happy and makes me feel like a good dog mom. Everyone at The Barkmont is so kind and patient and you can tell that they truly love what they do, it really does show! I also love connecting with them on social media! It's so fun to get tagged In their stories and post! it makes you feel like you and your pup are part of their doggie community! We bought the puppy socializing package and it is SO worth it!! I'm sad I don't live close enough to bring my dog here anymore but this place is amazing. I've taken my dog to Camp Bow Wow, Wag Hotel, and other smaller places but this place is the best of them all. The employees really care about your dogs and they don't cramp up their space like a lot of other chain boarding spots do, so your dogs won't feel like sardines. They also interact a lot with your dogs and clearly love playing with/training their dogs; we won't find them just showing up to clean up messes or passively watching from the corner. The fact that they also have cams is a huge plus. Your pup will have fun here and will be well taken care of by people who love dogs :) read more

My two dogs absolutely love The Barkmont. We can't even say the word Barkmont without them getting excited. They run to the car when they know they're going to daycare, and by the time we're a few blocks away, they can no longer contain their joy. We started sending our first dog for daycare when he was about eight months old. Our second, a rescue, was being fostered by the Barkmont when he made best friends with our first (we promptly adopted him - after watching their love unfold on the puppy cam). Both now attend daycare regularly and board on occasion, and both cannot get enough! From a human perspective, it's been such a gift to know that my dogs are safe, well taken care of, and feel at home during every stay. I tend to worry about them, so knowing they're so happy at The Barkmont - and in the care of such a kind and professional staff at such a clean and well-run facility - is a huge relief, especially when they're boarding. Other pluses: the puppy cam! The fact that they are placed in well-supervised size and temperament-based play groups for fun and safe socialization. The special events, like holiday picture days and themed treats. It honestly makes me so happy that they get to have so much fun, and participate in their own little canine community. The Barkmont's owner quickly responded and we had a nice long phone conversation about my dog's needs and whether The Barkmont could accommodate them. He wasn't too concerned so we set up an evaluation to make sure there wouldn't be any issues, and it went great. Since then we have done both daycare and boarding for our two dogs and everything has gone smoothly. We really appreciate the thought and care that went into our dog's stay over Christmas for 11 nights. He had a UTI that was discovered during his visit, and Kirk was kind enough to call us and coordinate a time to take our dog to his Vet. We appreciate that they gave him meds daily and the fact that they didn't charge us extra for the additional TLC (vet visit, transport and daily meds x2) was very much noted. We've taken him to Dog Time Stay & Play and although they did a good job as well, he tends to come home really skinny when he stays there. He looked healthy when he came home from the Barkmont. The camera quality is really good, although we started to reference the wall we couldn't see behind as the "peanut butter wall" because so many dogs would stay there, out of sight of the camera. I wish you moved the cam a bit! It costs quite a bit to come here, but it's really only $10-$15 more per night than some of the competition for an immense peace of mind. I had a helpful exchange with the owner of the Barkmont about my concerns and was optimistic about taking my dog there again. Then I tried to log in to make a reservation for daycare, only to see that my account was blocked. I tried resetting my password and got an email indicating that I was banned from the Barkmont, presumably on account of my 3 star review. After searching for 2,5 years for an appropriate place for my highly fearful, anxious dog, I am happy to have found Barkmont. The owner and staff have been understanding and accommodating to the unique needs of my tripod (can't be crated, escape artist, can't be on hard floors for extended periods of time, anxious, fearful etc). He has been to 3 daycare sessions to prepare him for boarding, and just stayed successfully for two nights. We are looking forward to our first 7-10 day stay. We are so grateful for the Barkmont staff's care. When our 3 yo dog fell ill with a suspected UTI on day 2 of a week-long boarding stay, Kirk and Amanda went above and beyond to take care of him. On a busy holiday weekend Kirk personally took our anxious pup to the vet hospital. He monitored his condition, picked up and administered meds, communicated regularly, kept our dog calm (as per doctor's orders) yet still socializing with other dogs, and gave us much peace of mind so that we could relax on our long-awaited vacation. Our two- and four year old labs, Lucy and Natasha had a terrific time when they were "hotel guests" at the Barkmont for six days. The whole space is spotlessly maintained. There were always other doggies to play with, but the huge space was never even close to being crowded. Everyone on the staff is kind (to people and doggies) and their kindness is appreciated by all. Our dogs have never been anxious about being separated from their people, but they do not do well if separated from each other. The arrangement of the space permitted each of the girls to play with many others, while always having her sister in sight. They even slept right next to each other. Amanda and her crew are thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of pet parents. They are extremely accommodating. Amanda had our pups come in for a trial run before they boarded so that all parties concerned were comfortable with the setting and arrangements. Play groups were assigned by size and temperament (we were assigned very appropriately to the "Big and Active" group). Webcams are on in all the playrooms which is a comfort and a delight. We were able to watch our pets playing with other dogs and staff, and see firsthand what a great time they were having! I brought my nine week old puppy here for her first day care session. I watched the live feed all day and hardly saw my dog being attended to. I had to call to ask for them to play with her. When I picked her up she was bouncing off the walls, full of energy rather than happy and tired. My dog also caught kennel cough here. Though I know some things can't be helped and some of the worker were nice, I would NOT recommend this place for your puppies. read more

I rarely write reviews but there isn't a place I love more than Barkmont. Our little Hermione has been going there ever since she was a little pup and Amanda, Kirk, Aaron and the rest of the staff always treat her like one of their own. Everyone goes above and beyond in ensuring that the pups have a safe, stimulative and balanced experience, whether its while boarding the pups overnight or during the day. There are there specific things I love: 1. Attitude: Every single person at the Barkmont is there because they love dogs and they love their job. This naturally translates to how the pups are treated. 2. Communication: Amanda and the staff are incredibly prompt in responding back over email or over the phone. This is a bare minimum expectation but it's surprising how difficult it is to have this experience at doggy day cares. 3. Safety: I've observed at numerous occasions that the entire staff is on top of ensuring that each pup has a safe experience. It's been 2 years but Hermione still runs in every time I drop her off, that's a lot more than any pup parent could ask for. read more

Our 15 week old puppy had a great time at The Barkmont. I really appreciate the fact that they gave him his own pen as not to overwhelm him and give him time to acclimate. The workers played with him, and introduced a few dogs to help with socialization. Our dog came home happy and tired. I plan to come back next time I need a doggy daycare. read more

Where to start with The Barkmont! This place is AMAZING! Kirk and Amanda and their team are just out of this world. We are parents to a small tough guy miniature dachshund who thinks he's boss wherever he goes. He's a typical dachshund and likes to bark...a lot...at everyone. We turned to The Barkmont when our dog walker suddenly quit on us. We never thought our dog, Pablo, would be a good candidate for daycare since he never seemed comfortable with other dogs. However, Kirk and Amanda spent weeks gradually introducing Pablo to the dogs one at a time, taking time with him and figuring out what was best for him personally. They treat all their dogs this way, every one is an individual and they cater to their needs specifically. Now Pablo prefers being at daycare than at home- he's literally obsessed! The facilities are super clean, temperature controlled and the kennels are state of the art. There's always someone with your dogs at all times and you can log in at any time to watch a live web cam (warning- you can lose many hours at work doing this)! In terms of cost, it's incredibly competitive and there are various packages depending on what you want- it's much, much better value than our previous walker and he gets way more time with other people and dogs. We recommended The Barkmont to some of our friends with a challenging dog and exactly the same thing has happened. I can't praise this place enough.
