The Mauch Chunk Lake Park is located in the Boroughs of Jim Thorpe. It's in Carbon County, less than an hour's drive north of Allentown. I am not saying it's worth it or not, that's up to you but if you are in this area, visiting Jim Thorpe, you must come here. While lodging at this park, you can enjoy the art of Mother Nature on the 2.8-mile man-made Mauch Chunk Lake. Swimming is one of the most popular activities at Mauch Chunk Lake, but you can only do it while lifeguards are on duty. On the beach, visitors can enjoy access to play equipment for children, a food and refreshment stand, and a beach pavilion. You can't bring your pets. Fee: beach access is not free. Daily admission to the beach area is $3 for adults and $2 for children over 3 years old. Non-county residents pay a higher fee of $10 per adult and $7 per child. The park, where the lake is, it's full of activities. Camping: YES!! From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the camping rate is $20/per night for county residents and $40/per night for non-county residents. There are five different trails at Mauch Chunk Lake. The Switchback Trail, the most popular trail, is designed for hiking and biking.

Stayed in a couple of cabins with a few friends for the weekend and pleased with staff, grounds, store, picnic areas, boat launch, and boat rental/bait store. The boat rentals are very reasonable especially for the 1 hour rate at $15. Make sure to buy a cup of dried corn from the boat/bait shop to feed the nearby ducks as well - ducks of fun! Lovely weekend chilling and cooking over wood campfire. Only things not so lovely compared to other state's campsites were older bathrooms and toilets as well as people not cleaning up after themselves. Besides this negative it's a great park and campsite to enjoy!

Mauch Chunk Lake Park is a beautiful park about a two miles outside of Jim Thorpe. This was the starting point for our meetup hike yesterday. There was plenty of parking and a restroom in the front office area. We hiked the switch back Trail and it was beautiful, the total hike was 11 miles and featured breathtaking views as seen in the photos that I posted. The park rangers were all really nice, based on yesterday the park is a good place for fishing, as the streams had plenty of trout and fishermen were casting there lines. I didn't swim or enjoy the water part of the park as right after our hike which ended in the parking lot we dispersed. I will be back to hike again especially the 18.5 mile trail and then checkout the water sports

No summer is complete without going camping! We try to pick a different campground every year, and this year with the main goal of white water rafting in mind, we decided on Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The location was easy to find and accurate on my gps. I also appreciated that there is a separate night entrance that can be used in case you check-in after the office is closed. While the campsite sizes were pretty standard, we chose sites that were right on the lakefront which provided a really pretty view as soon as I crawled out of my tent in the morning. On the down side, the campgrounds could have been better maintained. For example, the campsites were full of rocks, so finding any clear area to set up a tent was difficult. We booked 3 campsites, but because of the amount of uneven ground on 1 of them... only 2 were usable. The bathrooms could have also been cleaner. Yes, I know this is camping... but there is only 1 cleaning time (5am to 6am*), and things got pretty grimy by the afternoon. Other than that, the area is great for activities. Rafting access points on the Lehigh River were about 10 minutes away, and there were also many things to do if you chose to stay on the lake or campgrounds. --------------------------- *I know this because I woke up at 5:08am one morning with the sickest need to pee. I reluctantly left my cozy sleeping bag to stumble to the bathroom only to find it locked for cleaning! No worries. I relieved myself in the woods like a pro camper.

Nice lake and they have a lifeguard. You are not allowed to bring alcohol in the lake, and no ring floating device. There is changing room but no shower. You do need to pay to get in.

I stayed in the organized group camping area and loved how the sites that we booked allowed for plenty of tents to spread out within your group. We stayed in J, K and L. Last year there were porter potties and this year there was a bathhouse. Sadly there were no showers, the family bathroom was locked all weekend, and maintence getting to the bathroom was not good. Wehad to walk through a field of knee high grass to get there. During peak tick season, this was not ideal. Lastly, quiet hours apparently do not exist this is area of camping. Groups around us were chanting and singing before 5am and had an intense volleyball match at 6am. Boyscotts camped near us and were up late screaming until 12am. There needs to be more ranger presence, this truly altered our experience. The state park itself has great hiking and swimming area but the organized group sites were very mismanaged.

The Asa Packer Mansion listed as a National Historic Landmark was the home of philanthropist, railroad magnate, and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer, from Oct. 16, 1861, to Oct. 29, 1912. Located in Jim Thorpe, this building is recognized by a red-ribbed tin roof and a central cupola proudly atop Packer Hill with the commanding stunning views of the surrounding Pocono Mountains, where my partner, his aunt and I came for a tour today. Tickets were easily available and reasonably priced for the 1pm tour, which covered the entirety of the first and second floors. Our tour guide was a young lady (she mentioned she is a senior in high school) who obviously loves her job and is personally interested in the history of the mansion and family. From the furniture, woodwork, and stained glass to the artwork, she spoke about the history or significance. The mansion is not a restoration where pictures and video are prohibited inside. An amazing walk back in time, for which we can recommend this place.

Our tour guide was very passionate about the subject and brought the story of the home to life. We learned so much about Asa Packer and his family as well as his contributions to the town itself. I highly recommend visiting the mansion. It's very affordable and you won't regret it. The setting is very scenic as it's set atop a gorgeous hill overlooking the region. Bonus points if you have the opportunity to visit during the fall season. You'll be surrounded by the most beautiful foliage. But very important to note, accessing the museum means walking up the hill and some stairs. It's a short walk but could be taxing for some. Very much worth your efforts though!

We took some pictures, walked around to take the views in. We noticed there is a development in process, so depending how long the construction will take place - I imagine the overlook might get more crowded, or the area more restricted. There is a picnic bench you can sit down at. And apparently there is also a camp site. Just imagine drinking your morning coffee with this view!
