I'm not one to make poor reviews, but I really couldn't let this one go. Such a bizarre experience. I came here last weekend with some of my girlfriends for a bachelorette party, but we did not stay long. I went to the bar to grab some waters with one of my girlfriends who is not able to drink wine and the 2 women behind the bar made us very uncomfortable for not ordering any wine and were extremely rude making a whole scene. They ultimately declined giving us any waters (don't know if that's legal) but we didn't care enough to stick around and ended up leaving. I do not recommend this winery. read more

I have visited this winery quite a few times with some friends. I had another great day here. The wine was delicious, the band was great and the visitors were very friendly as well. This is a somewhat rocky parking lot attached to a beautiful vineyard. The interior feels like a hunting lodge designed for fun instead of hunting, and there is outdoor seating on an attached deck and a second area downhill overlooking the grapes. No bears are getting these grapes, they seem to be surrounded by a secured fence. Their dessert shooter is a lot of fun - a delicate chocolate cup filled with one of their three dessert wines. It was recommended to drink about half the shooter, and then pop the whole thing. The wine blended perfectly with the chocolate. They also sell cold water and soda for those who may not be doing a tasting or drinking wine. read more

I was so disappointed. We arrived looking for a tasting and a glass to relax and enjoy a nice summer afternoon. We were talked out of a tasting, I am still not sure what happened, it was a confusing exchange. I hadn't even had any wine! I was offered a sip of two different whites. Thank you. Visited while spending a few days at Mohegan sun. My boyfriend is new to wine and I thought it would be fun to do a tasting. I've been to Maugle Sierra before and loved the wine and getting a chocolate shooter at the end. Upon arrival, I inquired about doing two tasting. I was quickly told "no. That was not the way to go." I was taken aback and very confused. The employee did let me try a wine before purchasing a bottle which was the cheapest option but the entire visit and exchange with the employee was very uncomfortable I would skip this vineyard and visit Jonathan Edwards where they will happily serve you a tasting. read more

This is always one of our GO-TO Vineyards while in CT. The staff is always super friendly, the grounds are beautiful and the wines are very good, I especially love their Rendezvous wine... RUINED MOTHERS DAY! We had a 2:00 reservation for 10 and left a deposit. We had family driving 1.5 hrs to meet. We arrived and the winery was closed due to plumbing problems. No one had the DECENCY to call us to let us know! A simple phone call! The owner was condescending when I called and when asked if he was the owner he replied well I'm the plumber today. NOT funny! This vineyard definitely gets points for having the most cabin-like feel. It's a spot I could imagine staying for a while. (They do have some live music days!) However, unbelievably to me, I did not like any of the wines here. I did not find them complex enough, and the prices seemed way too much to splurge on something that I didn't like. Also, it was really hard to get anyone's attention and stay on track with the pours. I didn't feel like they knew how to handle a small crowd compared to some of the other spots on the CT Wine Trail. Super cute and cozy spot with plenty of seating for any size party. The staffer that gave us a tasting was great and passionate about his work. The wine was good. My favorite was the rendezvous white which is a Riesling Cayuga Chardonnay blend. Bought a bottle to save for hot weather. The best part was the dessert chocolate shooter with a dessert wine inside. This is a lovely tasting room with some pretty scenery. I was only so-so with the wines though. We visited close to Valentine's Day and the tasting menu included three dessert wines as opposed to regular wine. I'm not a huge fan of dessert wine so I think it was a bit of a disadvantage. We did buy a bottle of rose as well as one of the dessert wines that my husband enjoyed. The woman that did our tasting said that in warmer months they have chairs and picnic tables set up as well as music on the weekend. It may be worth a drive to check that out. read more

So I logged on to my TripAdvisor account today and see I received a response from the owner of this establishment (or whoever is handling the TripAdvisor page) in response to my review. The review I posted was the same exact one I wrote on here 7/4/16 (minus the statement "The tasting I did yesterday" ). I gave them 3 stars, which in my opinion is not horrible. The atmosphere is great but I found the tasting to be just ok, nothing great. I guess the owner or person handling the TripAdvisor page for some reason chose my review to respond too, even though there were 2 and 1 star reviews bashing the place. They proceeded to tell me that " I needed to get my facts straight" in regards to the tasting I did. Maybe they should get their facts straight. My TripAdvisor review was written on July 22, 2016. I did not state that was the day I attended the Vineyard. I've seen reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp that have both stated the staff was rude. I think this response just proved those people right. ***Owner response below*** Owner at Maugle Sierra Vineyards, responded to this review, 2 weeks ago Interesting!. You must be speaking about a different wine tasting. Our wine tasting menu the 21st., and 22nd, of July and going forward, consists, of a Un-oaked Chard, Dry Riesling, Sweet Riesling, a Late Harvest, Frost Vidal (4 White wines), and a 2013 Cab Franc, and a 2008 Syrah, a second desert wine. Maugle Sierra is one of the hidden gems on the Connecticut Wine Trail. The common perception is that it's not possible to raise red wine grapes in Connecticut, that only white wines and sweeter wines do well. This obviously isn't true, because Maugle Sierra has a variety named St Croix, which makes incredibly complex, big red wines. The winery is very much tucked away, no rolling expanses of vineyards, but nice cozy, shady areas to enjoy a picnic and some wine. The tasting room is under the main house in the back, adjacent to the cellars. I've been there several times, and each time the winemaker himself is conducting the tastings. Ask him anything, he's eager to answer your questions. The wines are outstanding, as I've said. The reason is that they're unique, not like how one Cabernet Franc is different from another, but different in that these St Croix grapes lend a new dimension to the wines. If you're burnt out on tasting the same ol' same ol' styles of wines, Maugle Sierra has some that will peak your interest. Negatives? Not many. Price would be the biggest concern, but they are a very small winery, and not widely distributed at all, so it's understandable. read more

Cute area for a winery! I came here for my friend's bachelorette party and had a nice time. Even though the weather didn't pan out and we couldn't really go outside, the inside of this winery seats many and we had plenty of room to enjoy a bottle of wine, chat and play some games! The bottle of white we shared was very good- light and delicious. Next time I'm here I'd love to do a tasting to see which wine I'd want another bottle of and try out the outdoor seating! read more

We came to this winery after the weather prevented us from going to another vineyard that had limited indoor seating. Do not be discouraged by some other yelp reviews! This was a great place. It's very rustic looking and cozy. The indoor seating section is large, with tables, high top bar seats and couches by the fireplace. The tasting bar is also large and can accommodate a decent number of people. Unfortunately it was raining so we didn't get to fully appreciate the outdoor section, but it looked beautiful and they have tons of outside seating, as well. You can bring your own food as long as your purchase wine. We enjoyed the House white, the sunset white and the rose (but be advised, their rose is more spicy and less sweet than a traditional rose). Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back in the summer! read more

Great location with a pretty tasting room and a ton of outdoor seating. We've been twice when they have live music. It's always nice to have some music in the background. They let you bring in outside food, which is always nice. I do have to say though, they've been a bit crabby both times we've been there. The woman wouldn't let me use the Yelp check in offer (which is stingy anyway) even though we bought a bottle of wine. I always forget the attitude as soon as I walk away from the bar, which is why I'm able to give 4 stars. Do a tasting if you must, grab a bottle and go enjoy the outside seating and the music. A great stop on the trail and a great way to spend an afternoon and get a passport stamp! read more

A hidden gem! We came from Jonathan Edwards to this vineyard and really didn't know what to expect, but what a pleasant surprise. Hidden in a wooded clearing, the tasting room was warm and inviting. The staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable, and a live band was paying on the deck. The owner was out on the deck enjoying the sunny afternoon and everyone was smiling. We brought home a bottle of the St. Croix which was our favorite of the wines we tasted. Bonus points to the lady behind the bar for giving us a tip about heading to Captain Scott's in New London for some seafood at the dock. Bring your wine and prepare to OD on seafood. Highly recommended and absolutely one of our favorites of the dozen or so CT wine trail vineyards we have visited to date. read more

I love the atmosphere here-cozy and comfortable! We had a tasting-6 wines for $12...reasonable. Personally I only liked 2of the 6 because most of the wines are on the sweet side and that's not my thing. But...the staff is friendly and it's so relaxing here I would definitely come back. read more

"We don't do tastings during the live music." Well, this was disappointing. If they didn't offer tastings during live music, it should probably be marked somewhere. Also, the live music was outside, and the tasting bar is inside, so I'm not sure why they do that. If you're trying to get people to stay to watch the live music, you should probably offer tastings. I'm not going to purchase an entire glass before knowing what the wine tastes like. Finally, the bartenders have less personality than the dead crab I picked up on the beach today. At least I got my stamp so I don't need to return. read more

I love every vineyard I have been to in CT so far, so my opinions might be biased because I adore wine, cheese & wineries in general and every time I've been to a winery we've somehow picked awesome weekend with lots of sun and nice weather. Anyway, this place was no exception. I loved the decor, very California like, the wines were great & I LOVED the Adirondack chairs they had outside overlooking the vineyard. They also had a little truck outside where you could purchase pizza from (I had a small sample, it was tasty!) My only minor complaint was the people working here were not super friendly, in my opinion. They weren't that busy, so I'm not sure what the deal was, but they were the least friendly of all the vineyards I've been to so far. read more

We had a nice time when we visited, and--in our efforts to support regional agriculture--we bought a few bottles. We just opened one, their rose blend. It was ghastly. Like drinking Tupperware. We had a very unexpected and unwelcoming experience here. We showed up with 3 gift certificates for wine tastings and a bottle that we had won in a basket at a Kidney Foundation charity event during a silent auction. We Paid a lot of money for a good cause. It seemed that the employee behind the counter who was a older woman with light hair was pretty annoyed at the fact that we were trying to actually use them and we were refused wine tastings. She gave us a small glass each and one bottle for the three gift certificates. While we sat and drank our wine she talked to her boss and he told her to give us more wine which was nice of him. However, she gave us a spoiled bottle of red wine that we had to throw away after opening. It would be unfortunate if she knew it was spoiled upon giving it to us. She told us on the phone before we arrived that they close at 6 but sometimes 5 if nobody is there. We arrived at 3 and by 4:30 she was pressuring us to leave by locking the doors, asking us questions about where our Uber was, and finally locking the gate before we even got up and forcing us to get in a confusing situation with our driver. There was still another couple inside talking to the owner that was not harassed. It was clear all that mattered to her was leaving at 5. Will never go back here based on all of these things. This is one of the worst run wineries I have patroned. If you are going to serve sub-par wine, at least offer me good service and cute atmosphere for a road trip picnic. The proprietors and employees running the establishment were rude and pretentious and did not even explain to us the wines we were given. What the hell is the purpose of a wine tasting if you don't know what you are tasting? We weren't given a menu until three tastes into the presentation and after each pour, we were told what the wine was, then the employee would walk away. No one was available to answer any questions about the winery, where wines were made, blah. blah. blah. I've have gotten more education from a trip to Whole Foods. This place is lovely, romantic, cute... offers glasses by the wine, but I left with a sour taste in my mouth. Literally. From the crappy wine and the crappy service. We visited Maugle Sierra a couple years ago, and were shocked on our most recent visit by how beautiful the new tasting room is. It's extremely spacious and has tons of seating. Our tasting was conducted by a super knowledgeable and friendly woman, and was (I believe) $10 for seven samples, plus the glass. The wine was uniformly very good, particularly the two St. Croixs. Connecticut vineyards seem to produce much better white wines than reds, but the St. Croix grape grows well in this climate, and I wish more Connecticut vineyards grew it! Our group purchased a couple bottles of the Sunset White to drink out on the deck, which is huge and very comfortable. We eventually migrated to the lawn below, where there are even more tables. We're really looking forward to our next visit. read more
