Quaint, cozy, intimate, welcoming, relaxing, musical, and all the other things a diverse bar should be.

I'm a sucker for historic architecture so this is awesome. They brew their beers in house and also offer beers from other places. There also have wine and seltzers for the non beer lovers. I am a fan of sours so I had one of their sour beers (forgot the name) it was okay, it was extra sour, too sour. My husband enjoyed their IPAs. Also, we had some house made potato chips and a hot dog. Those were decent; I just wished they offered a dip for those chips! Hummus or something like that? We sat outside on a balmy June day. They had a few tables and our server was great. It's a nice spot to people watch too. Inside was large and spacious. There was a long line to the restrooms though, popular place. Overall, a cool space for some drinks and snacks; I definitely would go back and try out more food and beers.

Nothing out of this world but good enough to have a few pours before heading over to mystic pizza. Service was prompt and efficient, but not overly friendly. Where we unfortunately went wrong was eating here. Cheap fry oils and sloppy sandos that give bar food a bad reputation. I'm not sure why I expected more, but it fell short on freshness, flavor and creativity especially given today's modern brewpub scene. With a plethora of great restaurants in the area, next time I'd probably have drinks here then head to dinner elsewhere.

Beer'd Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Stonington, Connecticut in November 2012…read more It was founded by husband and wife Aaron Simoncini and Precious Putnam. After enrolling in a class entitled "Beers of the World" in college, Simoncini became very interested in craft beer and soon began homebrewing. It was during this time that he gained the nickname "Beer'd". Eventually with his now-wife Putnam, Simoncini set out to open his own brewery. The couple set up shop at the Velvet Mill in Stonington. The historic building was originally home to the American Velvet Company, which operated from 1892 to 1996. Today it is a multipurpose building that is home to a thriving community of small businesses and artist studios. When Beer'd originally opened in the mill, they had just a 100-barrel system. The brewery quickly became notable for their small-batch high quality IPAs. In 2018, Beer'd opened a secondary facility at the Airport Business Park in Groton. This new 12,000-sq-ft space expanded their production capacity to 6,000 barrels. An adjoining 60-seat taproom (dubbed "Beer'd Brewing @ The Silo") opened at the Groton facility in January 2020. To differentiate the two taprooms, the original location in Stonington is now often referred to as "Beer'd Brewing @ The Mill". I first visited Beer'd in 2013 (when they were just one of a small handful of breweries in Connecticut), and I've been a huge fan of their beer ever since. They are one of my favorite Connecticut breweries and I have visited them multiple times; they were even a stop on my brewery bus tour bachelor party. I also must point out that Aaron and Precious are lovely people. I recently stopped there while I was in the area. It had been a while since my last visit and there were a few changes. In addition to the original taproom, Beer'd has set up an indoor beer garden in the center of the Velvet Mill. Patrons can enjoy some beer paired with food from one of the mill's many food vendors. Beer'd also set up a designated "Dog Den" for patrons to enjoy a beer if they have furry friends. During this visit, I enjoyed a taster flight that featured "8 Days A Week" (Pale Ale), "Stunner For the Win" (New England IPA), "An Unexpected Upgrade" (Double IPA), and "Heavy Weight-Of-Sound" (Triple IPA). They were all excellent! I plan to continue enjoying Beer'd beers for years to come!

A chemical engineer by day, Alan brewed at home at nights and on weekends. In 2009, Alan and his wife Jennifer started thinking seriously about opening a brewery. The couple located a circa 1920s building that had originally been the Westerly Macaroni Factory. They outfitted the building, hired a great staff, and were open by the end of 2011. The first beer they brewed was "Flagship Ale". Jennifer oversaw the brewery operation while Alan continued to work full-time as an engineer, all while they raised four children. The Brintons later purchased the historic Cataldo House next door. After a careful renovation, they opened this property as their taproom and outdoor beer garden in May 2016. The brewery also partnered with Vetrano's Restaurant to launch "Vetrano's Wood Fired": fresh wood-fired pizza prepared on-site at the beer garden. The original brewery building is now used exclusively for production, canning, and beer-to-go sales. In 2020, Grey Sail expanded by opening South County Distillers: a sister distillery located on the same property. I have been enjoying Grey Sail's beer since the earliest days of the brewery. I have also visited the brewery a number of times and enjoyed watching them expand over the years. I recently stopped there for lunch with my son while we happened to be passing through the area. After grabbing a table at the beer garden, I ordered a sampler flight at the taproom which consisted of "Hazy Day" (Belgian Wit), "Middle Child" (IPA), "Raspberry Reef" (Wheat Ale), and "Haze, Ho!" (New England IPA). The latter was my favorite. For food, my son and I ordered and shared a "Cheese Pizza" and a "Margherita" (fresh mozzarella, sauce, basil, parmesan cheese, EVOO) from Vetrano's. We really enjoyed the pizza! During our visit, my son and I also enjoyed a few games of corn hole. Between their eclectic beer selection, quality craft cocktails, delicious wood-fried pizza, and spacious taproom and beer garden, I highly recommend a visit to Grey Sail Brewing!
