Max's Grill & Sheep Shedde Inn restaurant in Olivia Minnesota Went to Max's Grill on Wednesday July 10 2019 with two adults. We found this restaurant from Yelp for the area we were driving in on the way back from a two day photoshoot in SW Minnesota. The restaurant is located on the south side of Highways 212. The restaurant is attached to the Sheep Shedde Inn and has a large parking lot with plenty of spaces. (We did not visit the hotel, but there is an attached indoor hallway that will keep you out of the elements.) We were there for lunch and there was a seat yourself in the bar sign. Not too many other folks in there, and there were high tops and booths available for dining. There is an outdoor seating area that I think was for the restaurant - it wouldn't be high on my list to sit outside and look at tractor trailers drive past. Bathroom was clean, and the women's restroom has two stalls. The restaurant had a special of Salmon Burgers on an onion bun with pasta salad. We both opted for the Sourdough Patty Melt. Let's talk about food! SOURDOUGH PATTY MELT ($11.50) Grilled with fried onions and finished with cheddar cheese, we selected french fries for our side. After the fact it seemed odd that our server never asked how we wanted the burger cooked. I like rare and the burger arrived in a state that couldn't get any more well done. Lesson learned for next time, ask for level of doneness. The bread seemed more like a Texas Toast than sourdough and everything that came off the cooktop (burger, onions, bread) tasted like the Salmon special. French fries were also fried to a doneness level that made some of the smaller pieces hard. The fries also had a fishy taste to them too. If we stop in Olivia again we would likely try a different option. read more

I thought this was a great spot. The food was great and they had so many options. I was with a table of 5 and the food was served very fast. We were driving through Minnesota hauling a boat and Max's had a large parking lot as well to accommodate. read more

i really didn't expect much out of Olivia MN but we needed to stop along our travels and the outside of this place looked a tad more refined than some of the other places along our route. It was clean and has a huge menu and decent enough drink selection. The service was nice but not a place you will remember and want to stop frequently because it was just so damn delicious. Next time I will keep driving and try something new. read more

There aren't many options for food in a small town like Olivia. Fortunately, Max's Grill exists. Really good food at average prices in a good atmosphere. The staff is friendly. We've had a great meal every one of the dozen times we've gone to Max's. My one complaint is that they don't serve breakfast, which is really odd since they have the attached hotel/in. There is no decent place for breakfast in Olivia. Don't even suggest The Chatterbox...ugh! read more

I've never been one for negative reviews, however the experience we had at Max's Grill tonight was so disappointing that I felt it would be prudent to share. I've been to Max's in the past and had an okay-at-best meal- I mean you really can't expect much from a Sisco foods type of restaurant so the bar is never all that high anyway- but it's usually a good place to go if you want a giant serving of over-salted food. It is worth mentioning that the restaurant was MAYBE half full of customers. My main complaint is with our waitress, Laurie. She was rude, short, hard of hearing, and not knowledgable whatsoever about the menu. When we asked what beers were on tap we were met with a curt "well we have 15 of them." There was no beer list anywhere to be found. Or maybe there was, but she was too busy being annoyed over our request to make our bill more expensive to bother pointing it out. We ended up having to guess at what we might want until she heard one she recognized. Then, when we placed our order she had no idea what the side vegetables were. My elderly grandmother was met with a rude "I don't know, it's a medley." when she had the audacity to ask such a question. Sorry for wasting your time with our annoying requests, Laurie. On to the food, namely the "salad". They really shouldn't be allowed to call it a salad. It's a heap of lettuce paired with 1/4 cup of whatever dressing you choose. No other veggies, no croutons, and no cheese-- however it did come garnished with some previously frozen carrot sprinkles, so there's that. Once again, the bar is already low for this kind of restaurant, but they shot way below it. Moving on to the food, the reason for the second star. No real complaints on that front. I had the salmon pasta, which was, well, it was interesting. The salmon was good, the pasta was good, but they were not good together. Luckily they serve the entire salmon filet on top of the heap of pasta so I was able to easily separate the two. Others in my group had a sandwich, ribs, and shrimp. No complaints there. Finally, dessert. The apple pie is not as pictured, and our waitress forgot to include the ice cream. Whatever, after the rest of our experiences with her, this was not surprising. The other half of our table had the cheesecake, which they said was passable. Overall, this was very underwhelming and we will not be returning any time soon, because there's only so much one should have to endure in the interest of supporting local businesses. read more

Stopped through on the way to Minneapolis with the family. Excellent!!!! Extremely busy Friday evening and we had a table in about 10 mins. Quick, friendly service. Excellent food with great portions! In and out in about an hour! As mentioned...excellent!! I want to put extra emphasis on one part of our experience...customer service. During the CoVid-19 era it's tough to feel OK at an indoor restaurant. We took our masks and our chances yesterday at this fabulous place and were SO impressed with every single aspect of service! Stopped for a late lunch. Taco salad was inedible because it had way too much salt in the meat sauce. The server did an excellent job on service recovery and offered a different meal. I didn't have time. She did not charge for the meal. Great service...Food - not good. read more

I really enjoy the atmosphere and excellent service. I have been going to Maxes for several years basically because there are no other alternatives around the area.I would think for how busy they are the food would be exceptional, it is not. I always leave feeling that it could have been much better and sometimes never want to return for this reason.If the food was nearly as good as the service I wouldn't complain, there is a big difference.I hope ion the future they tackle this problem, the food is the reason we come not the conversation with our waitress.... I will give a big fist pump to Teddy tho, hes always on point! read more
