We saw old steam locomotives, learned how they work, and that the machine shop is busy making parts no longer found. The American Freedom Train, after years of work (I saw it in sad shape in 2018) will take to the rails next year for the 250th birthday of the U.S.A. Passenger cars were sitting for restoration, some in working order. The black one on the turntable was lived on by a wealthy couple during Covid as they traveled safely. The car that we sat in was used in the movie "The Natural" and Robert Redford sat there. The "Death" Car filled with steam and killed everyone in it, and now has active ghosts. Cabooses are no longer due to automation. Only an engineer and a conductor ride each train. I need to find a group and go again. Look for open houses here. Not expensive. A deal with a Groupon.

While I admit that I didn't read the description enough, I thought this would mostly be a train ride. It wasn't. So this starts in a large machine shop shared with a business. There is many friendly volunteers to check people in. Then a tour guide takes you to first a caboose to walk through. Then comes the train ride. It was cool as it was vintage passenger car, but was only 15 minutes. After this, you tour various old style steam and diesel trains. This is great for kids to a point, some do get restless, but there is plenty to look at. Adults interested in mechanics and old trains will also love it. They also have ghost tours as the passenger car was the site to an accident that killed many people. This group is interesting because they are mostly volunteer and are working to retire very expensive machinary. They also had a blacksmith (my favorite part).

The town is listed on the National Register of historic locations. The bridge was built 1831 and in 1920 they added the walking pedestrian bridge attached to it! Very nice feature!! An article in the Trumbull County Tribune Chronicle stated 'work is expected to begin in a couple of months' and should take approx 90 days to complete once started. The article also highlights the difficulties in getting the project underway, particularly due to the magnitude of the cost which is estimated in the winning bid of around $762,000. ----- Newton Falls Covered Bridge is the second oldest surviving covered bridge in the state of Ohio. The oldest is Roberts Bridge, built just two years earlier in 1829 and has the added distinction of being one of only 6 double-barrel, truss-designed bridges surviving in the United States. We visited the bridge early July (2023) and although it was closed to vehicle traffic, the covered pedestrian section was still actively being used by walkers and cyclists. The inscription on the land marker reads: "The Newton Falls covered bridge was built over the east branch of the Mahoning River around 1831. A crosswalk was added in 1921 for children crossing the bridge on their way to the school on Center Street. The Newton Falls bridge is considered the second oldest existing covered bridge in Ohio, the oldest covered bridge in use on its original site, the only covered bridge in the state with a covered crosswalk, and the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull County. Built on the Town Lattice truss plan, the bridge is 123 feet long and twenty-four feet wide. It has a clear span of 101 1/2 feet and a sixteen foot-wide roadway. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the structure is maintained by Trumbull County." ----- Unfortunately there is a slight error on the marker that needs correction! We ironically discovered the existence of Newton Falls covered bridge after conversation with a random stranger at another Ohio historic landmark - Lanterman's Mill. He learned of my love of covered bridges and told us of this drivable covered bridge that also happened to be on our way to another Ohio treasure - Chagrin Falls. So we detoured here. I couldn't help but smirk when I read it is "the only covered bridge in the state with a covered crosswalk" since I had just come from Lanterman's Mill covered bridge... another covered bridge IN THE STATE with a covered crosswalk. The marker was erected in 1999 and the Mill bridge was constructed in 1989. So technically the marker has been incorrect since it was first placed. FINAL THOUGHTS Hopefully the construction schedule will go as planned and maybe they will even have this beauty up and running by Christmas of 2023! I encourage the reader to venture 10 miles south to Parma, OH and climb 500 feet in elevation to the highlands. There is a beautiful collection of television and radio towers there. Most are taller than the Key Tower and in my estimation it is a far more unique and interesting photo op. Wikipedia says that this grouping of towers is second only to Mount Wilson in LA. I stood at the foot of one of these hulking beasts today and almost lost my balance when I kept moving my neck to see the top. Maybe equilibrium was lost because of the tower transmissions burrowing a hole into my brain. I harken back to one of the greatest films of all time They Live by John Carpenter starring Roddy Piper. The mission of the protagonist was to stop radio towers from programming our population thereby destroying humanity. I am conflicted with the plot because I love these towers so much and would never want any harm done to them. Come check out the towers when you have a chance. Have you ever been to a place so magical, you felt like you may float away at any time..? If your answer is no, then you have never been to the Cleveland Antenna Farm. It is a breathtaking few acres of land containing giant magical steel structures that send out signals that travel to far far away places for little children and grown folk as well to watch tv, play on their phones/tablets/beepers(maybe)?/computers/etc.. Nearby houses love this place so much, they attach mini Antenna to the roofs of their homes in attempts to bring some of the magic even closer to home. I bet by next year the word spreads and theres an entrance fee to this place. I imagine it to be something similar to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Very mind blowing! It's the picture perfect representation of Americana. Expect I personally think it's all fake. I have a like/hate relationship with the Falls. It feels too commercialized to be real, like the town it capitalizing on the small american lifestyle without actually being "small America". Maybe I've seen Pleasantville one too many times but this place just seems off. The stores aren't actually local, the restaurants aren't really run by families, the Starbucks is the most frequented stop, and unless you're making a hefty yearly salary, you just feel unwelcome. Or at least that's how I feel when I'm here. One time I had my NPR bumper sticker stolen off my car here. Now I don't know about you, but I don't think they wanted it for themselves. It was more like they didn't want that kind of riffraff in their town. Also, (this is the last thing I swear) no public transportation runs through Chagrin Falls. I have written to town hall about this because I think 1: it's discriminatory and 2: it's terrible marketing. Take it as you will, I'm just not a fan.

Like I said, I knew they had a kids "SECTION" and i know kids are rowdy but they don't stay their in their section and the parents act like it's an amusement park.
