There are two dining rooms, one private/VIP dining room that can seat about 20 people and the courtyard, which is where we ate. The kitchen was preparing mole with an electric food processor out in the courtyard. Our waitress offered to seat us inside to avoid the noise, but we didn't mind. The seven course meal with a wine and beer pairing came out to about $1550 MXN/person (about $70 US). The wine and beer pairing was well worth it. They're not shy on the pours. We got 4 full glasses of wine and they started stacking up (the next course would come out before I could finish the glass that was supposed to pair with the previous course). That said, the pacing was appropriate. I did not feel rushed. The wine was a combination of 3 Spanish and 1 Mexican. The beer was a local craft lager. The portion sizes were about right. I didn't leave feeling super stuffed nor unsatisfied. They even threw in a few complimentary tacos before the dessert, and a palate cleanser between the appetizer and main course portions of the tasting experience. The menu was color coded according to whether each item was vegetarian, vegan, or contained meat, with parallel Spanish and English sections. The selection was broad, with lots of Mexican foods, such as enchiladas, tamales, and tacos, and more international items, like a (veggie) burger and turkey croissant sandwich. Everything was reasonably priced, so I decided to give it a try. I had freshly made hot chocolate and vegan tamales, which were excellent (and huge), and a complementary order of fresh tortilla chips, refried beans, and salsa while I waited. The whole thing cost about 5 bucks, and I was stuffed. The service was a little on the slow side, but faster than anywhere else I'd visited in the city. One of the great things about Tonantzin is their commitment to supporting the local indigenous communities, in both their produce sourcing and employment practices. I came back three more times with some friends, to try the vegan enchiladas with mole sauce, the veggie burger, and a freshly blended apple, ginger, and pineapple juice, and the food and service were consistently excellent. The culinary reality was even better. We met the owners, a young couple and their children from Juchitan, Oaxaca. Their enthusiasm, refined eye for design, and beautiful execution of Oaxacan recipes make for a wonderful meal. We started with a Michelada made with Cerveza Indio and tamarindo, quesillo, tlayuda Maria Sabina, and the chicken enchiladas covered in a chocolate mole sauce and an agua de tamarindo. All excelent and from the simple hand written menu hanging at the entrance. For us, Nostalgia Sabor Istmeno is a rare find: reasonably priced, honest cooked to order food, So, for excellent Oaxacan cuisine in Chiapas, this is the spot. I'll post fotos shortly.
