Yikes. Decided to bring my mother in law for a quick dinner after reading reviews. I decided to ignore the bad reviews and wish I wouldn't have. We walked in and were the only ones in the restaurant. The guy up front was coughing and sneezing nonstop. He seated us and walked away without saying anything. The place looks very old and ran down. Lots of duck tape on the tables and chairs. The chef (Carol?) came out of the kitchen and asked if we needed a few minutes to order. We said yes and didn't see her for a solid 20 minutes. We finally ordered (Walnut chicken, Sesame chicken, and General Tsos chicken). They all came out and looked identical and tasted identical. It was an overpowering sweet / watery flavor. The chicken is very questionable. Finally the bill came. We watched Carol write a random amount down on a post it note and hand it to us. Our total ended up being $48.80. Not sure how she figured out this amount, but it definitely didn't reflect the menu price. The owners at least have a sense of humor (or the people dining do and Carol hasn't noticed)! read more

Go and sit inside. The place is in an old building and it has somewhat different acoustics. Food is hand made on site. I had the Walnut Chicken and it had all the right combinations of flavors and textures. The booths are somewhat worn so be careful how you plop down. Tables were clean. Men's restroom was a challenge to find though - watch the signs. The Owner waited on us and she is a very happy lady, easy to converse with. Not much in the way of "sit down, NON-fast-food" restaurants is available in Urbana, Ohio on a Sunday, after church, so...imagine our surprise when we walked into a nearly EMPTY Mayflower's Chinese Restaurant, & discovered some of there BEST tasting food we've EVER EATEN!! The Hot & Sour soup that Carol finished preparing as we entered the building, was absolutely & inarguably THEEEE BEST (so, OF COURSE we walked out with an extra couple quarts for what is predicted to be the coldest day of the year tomorrow) ...the Garlic Chicken that I ordered was HEAVENLY & my husband's Chicken Chow Mein was divine, TOOOOO. In terms of a Chinese restaurant in a small town in Ohio this really is a fantastic place. It's authentic for one. Was greeted by the chef and waited on by her too. Hunan chicken was delicious. My husband and I went to the Mayflowers Chinese restaurant for the first time yesterday afternoon. The woman owner was not at all friendly or helpful and talked down to us with the few questions we asked her. She actually was the rudest Asian person that I have ever tried to have a conversation with. The food was pretty much run of the mill, nothing exceptional and moderately priced for the amount of food we were served. When we went to the front to pay, she demanded to know if we had left a tip on the table. I said no and she said, What's the matter, you not like Asian People? Where do I start!? Great service, food and atmosphere. Carol really makes you feel comfortable and at home. Now, I see why she has been open for so long. She is very entertaining and accommodating as well. I came in with my family. Started with the green beans and egg rolls. They egg rolls are fairly large and worth it! Her green beans came out fresh, hot and we're cooked in a very good sauce. I would also highly recommend these. I ordered the Szechuan chicken, and my wife ordered the General Tso's. Both we're cooked very well, I would suggest the szechuan if you're wanting a good helping of vegetables with your meal. I tried my wife's General Tso's and it was piping hot and the chicken was nice and crispy! I can't think of anything negative to say based on this experience besides why I chose so long to come here. I cannot for the life of me understand where these positive reviews are coming from! We were traveling through town and needed lunch, but this was by far the worst Chinese food we have ever eaten. What you see in the pictures below are supposed to be fried rice, orange chicken, and some hot mustard. I got rid of the egg roll before I thought to take a picture. I literally could not get through eating any of it. The rice had nothing in it and was just brown dirt. The chicken was so watery it was swimming and a funky aftertaste & texture meant that I could only manage to get 2 bites down. The mustard is just runny yellow water with a hint of spicy mustard taste. Typically, when food is not up to par, it is rare that I cannot manage to just eat it anyway, but this was so bad I just had to throw it out. I normally would just move on, but there were so many positive reviews and this was such a bad experience that I felt something needed to be said. read more

A quick trip to Urbana, and all my favorite staples were closed, so what's a gal to do, but Yelp something a little bit better. Mayflower is located off one of the main streets of Urbana, just a couple blocks from the main round a bout in the town center. It's a blink and you'll miss it kinda place, but we found it. The inside is just so sad. I wish they could garner some funds to give the place a face lift. There was really not frills to speak of... just a couple of Asian prints on bland gray walls. I suppose this isn't really a place to bring a first date, but the food on the other hand is a different story. I go with my Americanized staples - Egg Drop soup, an Egg Roll, and right before I say my entrée the owner's wife stops me in my tracks. "General Tso's?" she asks. "Yes!" I giggle. She knows me all ready. I suppose I am THAT predictable. Note: This is my first time at this restaurant. The Soups: REALLY good. The Egg Drop was some of the best I've ever had. The wonton soup is a beef broth based, but the husband still enjoyed it. The Egg Rolls: Close to Ding-Ho's on the west side, but no cigar. They were still excellent! They serve with a sweet cherry sauce, instead of the traditional duck sauce. Very delicious! The Main dish: The General Tso's was.... Disappointing. The sauce was dark, and the chicken was just standard store bought stuff... not prepped. My husband's beef lo mein (Note: he ordered Pork) was very good, though. They offer these little donuts, but only by request. They're just a standard fry roll, but with sugar, and cinnamon. A nice little after meal treat. Pricing was moderate--This place was not one of the cheaper Chinese joints in the county. I wouldn't come out of my way to stop here, but if I were in Urbana again and in the same situation, I'd gladly give them my business. read more

I haven't been here in quite a few years so my daughter and I stopped in for lunch. The interior needs some revamping. The wall next to our table had a big hole in it. The noise from the kitchen was very annoying. I don't want to hear dishes being washed and banged around while I'm trying to relax and enjoy a meal. The menu is not helpful at all. It lists a meat and the name of numerous dishes but absolutely no description as to what the dishes consist of. I have no idea what a princess chicken is. I also don't enjoy having to ask multiple questions to find a meal I might like. The fried noodles were swimming in a dark blackish sauce that was just completely overwhelming. This place is truly a hidden treasure! Unknown to even some in the area, it's definitely the best Chinese you'll find in the midwest. The owner/operators Dale (chef) and Carol are nice, friendly people who have dedicated themselves to the restaurant. A word of warning: Carol is sometimes brusque, especially with first-time patrons it seems. Once you've been in a few times (and trust me, if you like Chinese, you'll be back), she treats you like family. Let it go if she comes off as cold at first. The food is to die for! The Shrimp Lover's Choice is about as good as it gets--tons of garlic and cooked to perfection. The green beans, available only when fresh and in-season from a local farm, are prepared in what I believe to be the tears of a god--the sauce is that phenomenal. The crab puffs are prepared in house, and if you think you like crab rangoon now, just wait; these bad boys are the best I've ever had. I no longer eat chicken, but can assure you from past years that their General Tso's is better than anything you've ever imagined. If you're used to it being encrusted in a sickly sweet glaze, be prepared for a spicy treat that will leave you wanting more. Also, be sure to ask if they have anything special: Carol shops the local markets as well as obtains some special stuff you'll find nowhere else, like frog's legs, gigantic prawns the size of lobsters and more--just ask! This was our first time ordering here, I viewed the menu online and called to place the order. When I arrived the owner reviewed the order. When I asked the total she said she would get it for me. I assumed she was calculating. Then she was handing me the cc receipt, I looked down and my total was $45. I asked how it was that expensive,she said we charge for cc. I took my food and left, when I got home I pulled up the website and calculated my 2 vegetable lo main, 1 shrimp fried rice, 2 wonton soups, and 1 crab Rangoon. My calculations were $25.90. Now, I was a bit confused and upset. I called and asked for a detailed receipt since I was not given one and she said she could get it for me. I questioned the fee for using the cc and she said it differs for each purchase. I repeated my order and said I would like to know the total for each it. She said she gave me a good deal.....I said I don't agree. She said the rice was 8, the lo main was 8, the soup was 5 each and there was no price give for Rangoon. So I said you charge me 10 for cc, she no no and did not give me the fee again. She offered me free rice at next visit, I declined. I said I did not think I would be returning since she was misleading and deceptive, I did inform her I would be contacting BBB and suggested she update her online menu and make if very clear they charge to use cc. She said they have done that for years, i said OK, i am a new customer and it was not mentioned anywhere. She said they have signage on doors i just did not see them. Mayflower really is the best place for Chinese food. The food is always fresh and delicious. The shrimp crab puffs are some of the best crab Rangoon. I can't stand eating crab rangoon from most places since it is mostly cream cheese filling, but mayflower has a nice balance between the seafood and cream cheese. The cherry dipping sauce is a wonderful addition and would love to know how they make it. For the people who feel the woman who owns it is rude don't know what they're talking about. I found them tucked away in downtown Urbana after making a quick trip from home and ready to return. Having never heard of them I based my call-in order strictly on the reviews and menu on Yelp. I was not disappointed. The owner took my order and it was ready when promised. It was to go so that my wife and I enjoyed it together at home. Hopefully, it will not be my last visit. When in Urbana and in the mood for Chinese cuisine, Mayflower, although bringing to mind the pilgrims, will be my choice for a meal that will satisfy that craving. Based on the menu, I can eat there often without becoming bored with the same thing every time.
