We have been coming to this part of Maine for 30 years. We routinely have dinner on Friday night at Maynard's at least once a summer. Friday night is prime rib and haddock night. We come for the haddock. I will never return to Maynard's again!!
First of all, the attitude of the waitress was disgraceful. When ordering, we simply tried to confirm that there was no shellfish in the haddock sauce or coating. I am ALLERGIC. You would think I was asking her to change my tires (which she likely is more skilled at). I got an attitude, a head shake, and a reply that 'of course it did not have shellfish, it's haddock'. Suddenly 2 minutes later she reappears from the kitchen and announces, 'oh there is some lobster flaked in the bread coating'.
My request to make it with plain bread crumbs was denied and resulted in a very dry piece of fish. An absolutely terrible meal made worse by the waitress' attitude.
After that ordering episode, she could care less about our table. Iced tea was never refilled, my served fish portion was spitefully 1/3 smaller than all the others at our table.
It gets worse. The clientele has sunk to a new low. In this very nice, traditional, BYOB dining room, which we have enjoyed for years, we were invaded by family groups in T-shirts, shorts, ball caps (which they did not remove) and beach coolers of canned beer. And yes, it was tossed around the table and drunk from the can as if they were at the beach. It was Friday night for God's sake. No decorum, no sense of appropriate behavior or dress was requested or demanded by the Owners. It was like being in the lounge area of a state highway Diner.
We couldn't wait to leave and we were in and out of there in 30 minutes.
If you want good haddock, stick to downtown Greenville. There are plenty of great restaurants there and the prices are just as reasonable. read more
