    Fried avocado's
    Janice S.

We have been here for the pub (which is great) but tonight was dinner and drinks. The service was excellent and the food was superb! Avocado deep fried crispy slices. Steak on our salads and great wine selection! I will be back for sure! I need to boat in this summer. Being on moose head lake is definitely a plus!

Gorgeous hydrangeas on the property still in full bloom.

We visit the Birchs once a year when we come up for the annual Fly-In. We absolutely love sitting on their back dock taking in the gorgeous lake views. For us these are some of the best views in all of Maine. The wine and beer selection are good but the restaurant food is fantastic. Plus again you can't beat the views, even from inside the restaurant. The fireplace is just magnificent and will be lit, which adds to the overall warmth of the place. Service is always consistent and their wait staff go above and beyond. Please checkout the pictures of our trip from the weekend of Sept 10th. Can't wait to return to take in the foliage for our first time.

First time visit for an overnight. Honeymoon cottage -great location. On the water. VERY rustic interior. NO frills and very simple. That is the charm but be aware before you book. No vacancy the weekend of our visit. LONG wait for breakfast and very harried and rushed erratic dinner service. ( not unusual with summer help gone ) BUT we can not applaud the best employee of the entire place -Ashley. She does it all. With a smile and great service! Just amazing. She made our weekend and I think without her it would have been a very different first impression. Prime rib was excellent, baked scallops as well. Will return in the summer as the location and ambience is fabulous!

    Drinks on the dock

Beautiful view! Great drinks but the poutine was a bit odd, not sure about tossing the fries in gravy it made them too soggy. Great place to pull your boat up and get a drink!

    Expensive lakefront campsite

The place was nice, I paid extra for their on the water campsite. Ten dollar extra charge for my dog. Internet at the restaurant/bar only, shabby rest rooms, beautiful lake view, OK food and beer, awesome est adirondack chants on porch. I just had a problem with the $92 total for one night camping.

    Under my table. Yes..a rat!!
    Jana L.

I'm not sure where to start as there were a few challenges but I'll start with the critters... 1) There was a RAT under our table. I spotted it whilst looking for a part of the camera. It was big, furry, and recently dead with all four limbs spread out as if the death was a horrendous one. When I flagged it to a waiter, he said it "must be from the rat poison." That gave me reassurance that 1. There's a rat problem and 2. There's poison near food. 2) There were dogs in the dining room. A nice black one called Abby went under our table, sniffed my husband's privates and begged for steak. 3) numerous flies landed on my broccoli. Now that's enough critter talk.... Food: Crab stuffed mushrooms were greasy and needed herbs, salt snd pepper Mussels: plentiful, loads of them but the ones in the top half of the kettle were dry and rubbery. Rib eye: average Baked stuffed haddock: watery. It sat in a pool of water that was mildly flavoured with wine and lemon After I pointed out the rat and dogs, I was surprised to see no discount on our bill! I had asked the waiter to please take my main away with less than half eaten because my appetite was lost due to the rat. I went to the manager who took my haddock off the bill and she apologised and advised me that "in maine we have mice." It's a shame about rodent, dogs and flies because their Bloody Mary is awesome

The cabin we stayed in, as well as the grounds, were well kept and clean. I was surprised and slightly disappointed to see that out of 12 cabins or so, there were only 6 other people there besides us. It had been raining alot for the past few weeks, so that might have kept some people away. We were hoping to enjoy a "Dark Sky" experience but was let down by mother nature both nights overcast and rainy skies. Overall, we made the best of it with board games in the Lodge, some canoeing and kayaking, and a small hike. If it wasn't so far of a drive from were we live, we would attempt to go back and try again to see the "Dark Sky".

There is a co-ed bunkhouse, separate mens and ladies composting toilet block and showers with solar hot water. No electricity otherwise. Each cabin also has a privy. Gas lanterns in the cabins. Everything is exceptionally clean and the AMC staff in the lodge provides 3 hearty family style meals a day included in the price of your booking. (sample dinner menu for one evening: home baked biscuits, Italian mixed green salad, roast pork with onion sauce and gravy, green beans, baked potatoes and sour cream, fruit cobbler for dessert, lemonade) The camp is surrounded by superbly marked trails snaking off into the mountains and the website gives good guidance on what to bring and what to expect. There are canoes and kayaks available for use but you must bring your own mountain bikes if you want to do any biking. There are board games in the lodge but you'll need to bring your own lanterns since the gas lamps in the cabins are not that bright. The website doesn't tell you how amazingly hospitable, approachable, and friendly the staff is. The access road is not paved but our little Kia handled it okay since the weather was perfect and we drove slowly. A 4x4 would be preferred.

Would encourage the inclusion of Paso Robles wines on their wine list (they are Nor Cal centric). Other than that, wouldn't change a thing. There is a spooky energy as we never saw Beverly again and felt like she abandoned the place after begrudgingly meeting us for check in. No dining on the premises on the Wednesday we checked in, no food delivery allowed, and no warning to book the on premises dining in advance. According to another Yelp reviewer, the dining was not worth it to begin with. I wish we had checked Yelp before booking. Beverly ruined our stay.

The Owner was Dog Unfriendly and Rude…read more My husband and I were really looking forward to this trip which included our 2 dogs. We were to pay 2 pet fees for them. My dogs are well mannered and loved by people when they meet them. We've travelled extensively with them to high-end hotels and very casual places like this one. However, The Owner jumped away from my dogs when they approached her to say, 'hi'. I was puzzled to see that in a country setting that's supposedly dog friendly. She clearly doesnt like other peoples dogs. She couldnt even look at them. She has a lap dog. 3 times we were given the wrong pass code to the door. It was raining and I had to walk to and from to the office while getting soaked. Our dogs were locked inside the cabin that was unlocked when we got there. When they saw their mommy struggling to get in the door they started to get agitated and jumped on the sliding glass door frantically. Owner Amy got mad and said that was 'unacceptable.' She couldnt have that. 'Not gonna happen.' She then walked away for a 4th try at getting the correct passcode while muttering on. She was clearly in a huff and mad. That was strange. What were the dog fees for? And they had our credit card on file. She never apologized for the problem that she caused by having us locked out. We were wet and confused at her behavior. She never gave me a chance to respond. And our dogs were frightened. Not a good way to start a getaway. I never saw Amy, or her husband Steve for the next 3 days. Ever. No checking on us. Nothing. It was like they were 'ghosts'. You knew they were there but never saw them. I discovered a 2" thick folder later. There was a Demand List for the visitors. It was printed with black and blue letters on a dark blue background. Almost unreadable. Dogs could not be left in the room unattended ever'. Also they were not allowed on their furniture. My dogs have been on nicer furniture in nicer places without any problems. This is a country cabin. The furniture is not new. The rugs are old and faded. The bedspreads are outdated and mixed matched. Thats the first time we ever had to do that, even in high-end hotels with much nicer furnishings. My dogs are quiet and well behaved. But that was the rules. So we abided reluctantly. Also, we received no tour of the grounds or mention of the water sport toys laying about. It was a real unwelcoming vibe. It was like a dark 'Gray' cloud of gloom was hovering like a 'Ghost' overhead. We would have left the day we arrived but it was raining, late, and we were tired. It was a 7 hour drive to an isolated area. They lucked out. We did not. P.S. My husband and I run several vacation rentals in varied places and enjoy serving happy travelers.

We could not have enjoyed a better stay at Gray Ghost Camps. We planned to stay only two nights but…read moreended up adding two additional nights for a total of four nights! Monica greeted us when we arrived and made us feel right at home! Our cabin was spotlessly clean (thank you, Monica!); the shower water pressure was strong and great; we had seemingly endless hot water for showers, dishes, etc.; the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking; and the bed was comfortable. The surrounding guests were incredibly quiet, so it was an idyllic little place to be. We loved the paddle boards and kayaks and used them multiple times a day. The river is what paddle board dreams are made of bc the water is so calm. For us, the availability to use these water toys added serious value to our stay and made the price of the stay a great value. We also loved paddling just across the river to Maynard's for coffee and breakfast in the morning. That was an unexpected treat to have that cozy, very affordable restaurant right across from us! Additionally, this location is the perfect access point for the ferry to Mt. Kineo, which is a must-do while you're here! The ferry leaves from Rockwood, which is three miles down the road. Another must-do is Rockwood Bar and Grille! The buffalo chicken pizza with blue cheese base was the best pizza my husband and I have ever had! We stayed in cabin three, and when we initially pulled up I was a bit dismayed because there is a not-so-aesthetically appealing little storage hut right in front of cabin three, which is a direct obstruction to the river view. However, I quickly got over that bc everything else about this place was so great for us! We highly recommend this place as an affordable home base for exploring this part of Maine! Thank you for having us!

In first approach the roads were jagged and exhausted from the long winter. Being mud season this needs to be over looked but needs to be mentioned. The main lodge/restaurant is beautiful and spacious with front desk access as well as hostess stand to guide you to your table which looks out to Mt. Katahdin. Staff is in a word. AMAZING! Everyone I encountered was friendly and helpful. When I had a health issue arise unexpectedly, Shorey, an employee in the restaurant went above and beyond to help resolve my ailment. She was successful in helping me get the help I needed. Our group took up most, if not all of the sleeping cabins. The group of chaperones I was with stayed in the "Loon" cabin. This cabin is nicer then the house I live in! All the comfort of home plus radiant heat floors, concrete counter tops, full kitchen, and fireplace! Plenty of sleeping arrangements with three bedrooms with queen sized beds and one room had an additional twin bed. In sun room there was a bed as well. Ethan Allen furniture through out. Granted, I can't speak to the plethora of available fun things, like volleyball, horseshoes, a rec center with ping pong, board games and screen doors, and all the kayaking Millinocket Lake has to offer, basically because a hurricane was blowing it all away. Check-in for the temporarily residential side of the New England Outdoor Center is sparkling, as its recently renovated to feature what we'd discover to be a damn fine in-house restaurant. Staff are an orchard of peaches for fruit-based metaphor, or a patch of blueberries if its more regionally appropriate, and while everything seems to be pencil and paper, they were organized. Back to Trout Mountain! With a full kitchen, proximity to all facilities and more beds than the Bunny Ranch, it's essentially a palace at the end of the AT. As such, it's only fitting it sleeps 14 (or 24 college kids, because stop playin'). The only rub - even when you roll deep, you're still looking at anywhere from $70-100 per glamper per night, and three of the beds are in a shared loft. Singles pad, anyone? The wifi is extremely spotty - tough luck keeping a signal to check email, let alone stream reruns of Big Brother on Hulu. Dog friendly, too, so bring ya pup, bring ya wife. Leave your iPhone.
