I thought my family and childhood memories were lost but the folks at Mayo Video were able to convert several old VHS tapes to DVD -- I'm now able to share video as far back as 1984 with my family and friends on Facebook! I dropped the tapes off on a Sunday (no appointment, just dropped by and was still welcomed and accommodated). By Friday my tapes and DVDs were hand delivered to my home. Would have been significantly higher, BUT...they offer money for 5-star Yelp reviews. If you need to bribe customers to get good things written about you, and especially if doing so is in violation of Yelp's user guidelines, you don't deserve the business. Simple as that. Mayo is an interesting name for this business because 'mayo', like mayonnaise, is kind of harmless looking and can seem like it's a good idea, but in the end can result in big problems for some. On another introductory note, I'm allowing one star in this review because 1) I am still alive and have all of my limbs intact, and 2) since my reason for contracting them was to have a videotape transferred to another format, they did technically achieve that basic task. Ultimately, the effort and frustration of buying the equipment myself, learning how to use it and doing the job on my own would have been preferable. This was much like going to the dentist, because there was a lot of pulling teeth to get the job done. It seemed that at every turn, the person I dealt with, who does not appear to possess the various basics of customer service or of reasonable business practices (based only on my experience) will not be able to build this business into a survivable enterprise. 1) He did not label the order properly or consistently. 2) The transfer was done in a very elementary fashion. 3) I did not receive confirmation emails for payment, receipt of goods or anything except the initial quote. 4) I did not receive an email or call when the project was completed, even after emailing and leaving a message to verify. 5) Even though I had indicated directions in written and verbal form, pretty much none of them were followed. 6) At virtually every turn the solutions that he offered to fix the problems he created meant that I would have to put forth extra effort, money and/or go out of my way. 7) Even in the one instance in which he made some extra effort to solve one of the problems (giving credit where it is due) the problem still required someone not affiliated with his business to solve it. Ouch. Don't be fooled by the seemingly sophisticated website---But do note that there is no store front, but instead drop-offs/pick-ups seem to be most often done at an apartment building via the front desk. This seems to be a very small in-home business run by a beginner. If that's not the case, then he's giving off the wrong vibe. It seemed like it was the first day, the first order, and he was working out he kinks, but expecting others to work them out for him. So, if you didn't catch the drift, I will never use this service again. Given that there are many other similar services available in Manhattan, I doubt you can have worse luck with them and encourage you to bypass them like I should have. Never got in the door. I confirmed the address and the hours and no one told me that A: A different address is printed on the front of the building and B: Mayo Video is run out of someone's apartment, so there's no sign and no knowing when he'll be home. I guess 9 AM to 9 PM just means he's closed the rest of the day, not that he's necessarily open during those hours. Big waste of time. read more

Hold the Mayo! This was by far the worst consumer experience of my life. Two months ago, I dropped off two VHS tapes for video transferring services and was told that it would take a couple days for a finished product. The tapes in question were old family videos and I thought it would make a great present for my family this holiday season. Flash forward two months, the holidays are over, and I still do not have my finished product. After a few weeks had gone by with no contact I called Mayo Video to find out what the hold up was. Every time I called I was told that they were still working on my tapes and to check back tomorrow, that it would probably be ready then. I got this line from the same guy 5 times. So the waiting went on and on and on. Once they even claimed that the tapes were blank. I was so furious when they told me that but that anger was nothing compared to how I felt the time they told me to come to the store to pick them up, which I did on the way to airport for the holidays, only to find out that the tapes weren't there. After that snafu, I demanded a refund but really I just wanted my tapes back. It had been a month and a half with no results. Needless to say, I felt that I was being given the run around. I'm pretty sure that my tapes just sat around for over a month before anyone even attempted to work on them. The ultimate result? No trasferred media, possibly ruined data, and a massive headache. This place communicates horribly. Instead of working on converting old tapes they should work on converting their business practices to include proper communication and decent turn around times. Please, please...HOLD THE MAYO!!! and go somewhere else. There are plenty of services like this in the city. read more

Turn around time was good but I doubt he even checked the quality of the DVDs after converting. One was just jiggly lines, nothing visible, another had broken up sound that was not the case on the original VHS. At first they said they only delivered within a certain radius, but agreed to drop off after I pointed out that their website stated free delivery in NYC. read more

I dropped off an old VHS video to be converted to DVD at this company's 8th Avenue drop-off spot --a UPS store-- on Father's Day 2013. I have yet to receive my converted video or my original video back. After repeated calls to both the toll free and (212) numbers during business hours, after work and on the weekends, I have yet to reach a live person. Not only have my voice-mails gone unanswered, no one has bothered to respond to the request for contact I submitted to the company's website or to the email I sent to info@mayovideos.com requesting a status update. I am contacting my credit card company to have my money refunded. This is not a legitimate business. Submit your personal property to this "business" at your own risk. read more
