Mazzone's is your average neighborhood hardware store: they make keys, sell tools, paint and other stuff you might need around the house. They also have a pretty substantial garden section when the weather is nice. Prices are a little bit higher than Lowe's or Home Depot but it's nice to support a local business. Only thing I hate is their hours - half the time I walk all the way down there only to find they are closed. They close early on the weekends (like 3 or 4) and often close for a few days at a time on holidays. read more

Very friendly staff and good prices. Lowes across the channel screwed me up by selling me a defective $50 deadbolt lock, wouldn't replace the lock, and refused to sell me just the small part that was defective. A small brass ring, that was all. Walked by Mazzone on my way home and asked them if they had such brass ring or similar. Sales clerk walked me over to locksmith's station, and the locksmith had the correct ring in his bag of spare parts. He gave it to me for free. Now I do all my hardware shopping there instead of Lowes or Home Depot. read more

One of the best things about living in Carroll Gardens are small businesses like this! Every time I walk into Mazzone's, I'm immediately greeted by a friendly staff member who asks how they can help me. Normally, what happens next is I hold up a miscellaneous piece of hardware that fell off of something in my apartment and I say, "I need another one of these." Within minutes, the friendly staffer finds me a duplicate, at a really decent price. When I need spare keys cut, they do it quickly. They've also let me leave drop off my keys as I head out for a jog and pick them up with a set of spares on my way home. Love this place. read more

This is an amazing hardware store. We come from BK Heights specifically for Nelson and his amazing work with our lighting! He re-wired two lights for us - essentially bringing them back to life. Not only did he do a great job, but in advance of the work, we sent him photos, he emailed us back very quickly and gave us great guidance. I love Mazzone! Friendly staff, and stocked to the ceiling with what you need. There is even a gentleman on staff who completed some bench work for a vintage ceiling lamp I needed rewired. Sometimes on my way home from work, I'll stop off at a big box retailer and it amazes me that they never have what I need. I've finally learned my lesson to just go straight to Mazzone... Used to buy alot of stuff there. Sometimes the help is a little too enthusiastic, young and not very experienced with the stuff they sell. They screwed up a couple of custom paint mixes lately. This place has the worst customer service. I've had multiple negative experiences and will not come back. I live two blocks away but would rather walk an extra 10 min or take the subway to another hardware store than come here again. First, I once brought a plant to be potted and the lady who always works in the nursery straight up refused to pot it for us. She didn't give any reason but it was clear she was too lazy to do it. We offered to pay her to pot it but she gave us a ton of attitude and asked us to bring it back the next day to pot it. Wtf? I went inside to complain about her attitude and somehow this moron still works there. Second, I just called them a few minutes before closing time to ask if they could please wait for me to run over (I live TWO blocks away) to get a flower pot. The lady told me flat out "no" and that she couldn't hold the store open for me. All it would have required was for them to stay open maybe a few minutes longer but now they have not only lost a sale but also a customer. Seriously, some kind of local business. Every time I think about that lazy chick in the nursery I am so angry because she literally had the worst attitude I've ever seen. Do NOT shop here. read more

Our company had a client and I needed a last minute paint delivery to complete the job on time and the girl who answered the phone was nothing but pleasant and helpful. Not only were they able to get the paint there for me on the same day, they do so within an hour and a half. Prices were reasonable and the customer service was just wonderful. They cover all the seasonal goodies too - for those in the 'hood with some yard space they can set you up with all your garden gear. Amazing staff! I stopped by on a whim to see what they could suggest for an indoor table far from my south-facing window. A handful of recommendations were given with explanation of other variables to consider and when they mentioned that a specific fern couldn't really get overwatered (which I tend to do) and that it would get huge (which I want) I was sold! And it was so affordable! Then another staff member mentioned their favorite soil and then after chatting with my original staff person for a second she gave me a free cut from a spider plant! And THEN when I went to the cashier THEY got genuinely excited for me and my spider plant cut, too! Best experience ever. read more

Not really any better in terms of service/friendliness than Lowes (where I think people are friendly enough), which is nearby as well. But no need to go to Lowes - which is gigantic - if all you need are some keys to be cut and it's a good place to shop. The people who work there will ask you if you need help, and it's easy to find someone to help out if you're not sure of what you need. There are enough items for most small projects you might need around the home - shelves, paints, plunger, picture hangers, screws, electrical wire. You will not find Tupperware or 100 varieties of lightbulbs, lumber, power tools, or window treatments. For that, you should definitely go to Lowes. I don't like the hours, but I think many mom&pop hardware stores - even in Manhattan - close around 6pm. And their hours aren't atypical for the neighborhood. read more

The best customer service I've experienced at any store, period. The people who work here genuinely enjoy their work, their colleagues, and helping the people who walk inside every day. I wish they were open a little later sometimes, but that just means I get to come on the weekends. It feels weird to say this of a store that's technically one of many Ace Hardwares in the country, but Mazzone feels like an actual part of the Carroll Gardens ecosystem.
