We got there an hour before the show started, so we were able to sit in the 6th row (middle)! I was surprised to see a lot of people already seated an hour before the show, too. There was a man speaking on stage, and he was discussing the show. I thought that was pretty cool. He went over the program and gave us some background info. Ten minutes before the show started, I saw all the performers tuning their instruments. There was definitely a lot of noise on stage. =) Finally, the lights began to dim and the show was about to start. I was waiting in anticipation. =) I really enjoyed the first half of the show. All the flamenco dancers made the show really interesting. They all did a great job dancing to the music, too. I liked how there was a 20 minute intermission. This gave people time to use the restroom or just get up and stretch. The second half of the show was mainly a guitarist. He played all the songs without looking at any notes! I was really impressed. Overall, the Peninsula Symphony was a really great show.

Growing up, I was the 3rd chair violinist in the school orchestra and I played the piano competitively throughout high school. Sadly, after college, I rarely got the chance to play either instrument, and I'm not even sure if I sat at a piano today, I could play. My mom and I had the pleasure of seeing the Peninsula Symphony kick off their 60th season at Flint Center on Saturday. Acclaimed concert pianist Jeffrey Siegel played one of my favorite concertos, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor. We enjoyed a wonderful evening of Romantic masterpieces. I left feeling inspired to take up the piano again. Tickets to concerts are very affordable, and they perform at various concert halls throughout the Valley. Check out their schedule for upcoming concerts. I know I need a little more culture in my life, and this is something my mom and I can enjoy together, which is great for mother-daughter bonding.

The location is also pure perfection because it is within the same block as several restaurants and bars for those who want to grab a bite or drink before or after their show. The only (small) downside is finding parking. We parked in an outdoor lot 2 blocks away for $20. It is about the average rate for the area but still seems steep to me for a 2 hour show. *breathe* Trying to not sweat the small stuff, so I say pay for the steep parking and enjoy the gorgeous theater and watch a nice show! It will be worth the experience.

Sure, it was nice that the opera was NOT nine hours long, but that's me. Your mileage may vary. The outside of the building blends in so well to its surroundings, you may not notice it at first. But, the California Theatre is easy to find, and perfect to walk to from parking or a restaurant. Even in the entrance way before you walk in (where there's the Box Office for will-call or day-of tickets), you see the elegance and grandeur that awaits. Still, there's nothing stuff about it at all. Every staff member or volunteer I encountered was helpful, friendly, and welcoming. There happened to be live music in the Lobby before and after the performance. Refreshments are found on each floor. We had Orchestra Seats. The opera looked and sounded crisp. The singing, the set, the orchestra, the costumes all radiated excitement and serious fun. This particular opera, by Bela Bartok, is rarely done and having some familiarity with the composer, I was excited to check it out. Very much enjoyed the opera, and the venue. If you are an SJSU student, ask about tickets and/or big discounts available at the Box Office.

Willow Glen Children's Theatre is a wonderful program. This is the second time my kids (one in…read moreelementary school and one in middle school) have participated, and they absolutely love it! They were hesitant about theater at first, but we were able to sit in for part of a class, and they had a blast. The program starts with lots of games to help kids come out of their shells and lets the instructors get to know each child's personality. From there, the leaders write an original play with characters tailored specifically to the kids. Many families have been involved for years, and the parent-and-kid community is incredibly welcoming.

So depending on your style, you could sit and listen to some smooth jazz, RB Jazz, etc. Also, you could walk around and browse the merchandise or food vendors to determine what to eat while still being in earshot to hear some music going on.
