My recent experience at McAllen Medical Hospital's Emergency Room was deeply concerning, marked by patient mistreatment, neglect, and a troubling lack of competence. I was initially evaluated by a recent medical school graduate with only four months of experience, who discharged me with a vague diagnosis of "headaches" and a prescription for nausea--without adhering to proper protocols or completing the diagnostic orders I arrived with. The attending physician never entered my room or spoke with me prior to discharge, relying solely on Dr. Zapien's inaccurate assertion that I had presented for headaches, which was far from the truth. It was only after a family member--an experienced Emergency Room Physician and faculty member at a leading medical school--advocated on my behalf that my discharge was canceled and I was admitted to 4 East. Unfortunately, conditions deteriorated further upon admission. My stay on 4 East was characterized by patient mistreatment and a disturbing disregard for ethical standards. My assigned nurse, Branden, exhibited gross unprofessionalism and moral insensitivity, engaging in unsolicited, inappropriate, and psychologically intrusive commentary that had no place in a medical setting. His conduct demonstrated a complete lack of respect for patient dignity, emotional well-being, and trauma-informed care principles. Was in ICU and for some reason as soon as my doctor was out the room, I would be told by one ICU nurse that there was nothing wrong with me and I'd be out soon. Another unknown doctor came in and told me in a terse tone that people live with my condition. I was moved without my doctor knowing to a regular room, I spent a few hours there and was flown out to a hospital in Houston for open-heart surgery! Ridiculous!!! I'm blessed that my two doctors held their own: Dr. Menon and Dr. Georgiadis. read more

I took a family member to McAllen Medical Center a micro urgent care in Alamo, They did a Ct Neck and Brain, Then was transferred to Main Hospital for an MRI, we got to the Main Hospital at 1am. When he was transferred to room I ask nurse if i could get a Recliner, his response was "we are very limited on resources, but may be i could get you a chair". About 15 minutes later he came in to the room with, with an old worn out chair, the padding was worn out, not suitable to be sitting all night. I always consider this one of the best hospitals. I was so disappointed to see that patients are just a number, if family members are spending night, they wont offer a recliner a pillow or a blanket. Nurse Orly and Dr. Guzman were amazing. After 18 days here, I am ready to go home! I have had many wonderful nurses, and rather than miss some, I am not going to mention any names, but you were all great!, I have also had some great CNAs. Very kind and very accommodating. I have also had some great housekeeping staff, 2 I would like to mention are Mary Cruz, and Lo. I had Lo last time I was here and he was just as friendly as before. Mary was also a ray of sunshine while in my room. When you are in isolation it makes a world of difference to see a smiling face even if it is behind a mask. Two people I would like to give a shout out too are Noe and Deana. They really helped me when I really needed It. Got my problem solved, and followed up several times to make sure things were moving in the right direction. Dietary was improved this stay, although no menus, they were able to meet my personal choices for meals. Meals still were not heated to proper heat requirements, and I understand the difficulty in that with so many meals to get out. The nurses and CNAs were willing to heat meals, ut with them being understaffed I hated to ask them. basically Good Job McAllen Medical! read more

Took my elderly mother-in law for a carotid ultrasound. The technician that performed the study used a lot of pressure and caused a skin tear that became infected. The infection has become resistant to antibiotics. The area affected exposes a mandibular implant from a previous surgery. No other hospital is willing to accept her as a patient. It is only a matter of time before her wound exacerbates and the infection spreads. Dr. Bayat performed an incision/debridement but the results were only temporary. We are grateful that he made an effort. MMC has not accepted responsibility or apologized for their errant actions. Our family will never utilize their services again. read more

Want to be scammed out of $4,000? Then this is the medical center for you! My brother, who is 26 years old and makes $16 an hour, was visiting family on vacation (he lives in Mississippi) and got an ear infection while he was there. He came to this clinic and received a steroid shot and a prescription, and was there for a total of MAYBE an hour. He received an invoice for $4,661 - insurance paid for $991 (MORE than enough to cover the cost of his treatment), and they are now invoicing my brother for the exorbitant amount of $3,653.53. We have tried to work with the clinic privately to rectify this absolutely nonsensical charge, but they have refused, stating he came in and was treated for a "life threatening emergency" and that the bill will not be dropped and is valid. This is nothing more than a fraudulent healthcare system (the South Texas Health System this clinic is a part of) at work. Not only is this a totally unethical business practice - we can easily make an argument that it is illegal, and we are in the process of taking legal action against the clinic. Whatever you do, DO NOT trust this clinic - you'll regret it when you are subject to their completely irresponsible and ridiculous charges. We are thankful to be able to take the steps to defend and protect our family against these charges, but we know not everyone is able to do so. No one should ever have to go through this to be treated for a simple ear infection. read more

I don't have a whole lot of experience with hospitals except the work aspect, but I'm quite impressed with McAllen Heart Hospital. A loved one was scheduled to have a surgical procedure here and the whole experience was as wonderful as this kind of experience could be. Went in the day before the procedure to check in and get registered and all of that. The intake person was occupied right when we got there, so we were given a buzzer (like the kind you get in a restaurant) and directed to the waiting area and were buzzed when they were ready for us. The nurse performing the preoperative interview, Betty, was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable of the procedure and went over all the paperwork diligently, making sure all the i's were dotted and the t's were crossed. Betty also managed to draw blood with just one stick, quite a feat on a chemo patient whose veins are almost completely blown out. Turns out she was a surgical tech before she was a nurse, so her and I had a technical conversation when my loved one went in for a chest x-ray. The next morning, the day of the surgery, we were told to arrive at 7am. Shortly thereafter, Betty came and found us to inform us that there was an emergency and that, if we wanted, we could go home and return to the hospital at 10 (about the time the emergency would be finished). We waited in the preop area for a while before she was actually brought to surgery. The surgical nurses did their preop checking, but Betty had to start the IV because the others couldn't get it. While she was in surgery, I zoned out in the waiting room on my DSi, and the time seemed to fly by. She had to stay overnight, her caretakers (while I was there, anyway) were fantastic and had great senses of humor. Stopped by Edible Arrangements before going to visit here, and the nurses kept making excuses to come into the room to grab fruit from the fancy bouquet. The room itself was bigger than a lot of the hospital rooms I've seen and, of course, had a private bathroom and a tiny tv. She also had the same staff yesterday that she did today when she was being discharged. Consistency of care is always a good thing. Maybe they thought that there might be more tasty treats for them. The nurse showed me how to change the dressings and whatnot, although there's a home health agency coming over to take care of all of that. At least I know how to do it now. I highly recommend McAllen Heart Hospital if you or a loved one need heart or lung surgery. read more

Drove in with my wife for a Dr's appointment. We had never been at this hospital other than to visit friends and family in not so often occasions. We checked in about ten minutes before her appointment and were asked to take a seat while they arranged everything needed. For my surprise, they called us in within ten minutes from check in. The nurse that attended my wife was very attentive and professional. One thing I'm very thankful for is that she made us feel comfortable throughout our visit. We would really recommend this hospital for any exams you can't get done at your family doctor. read more

Sister broke arm on Mon(Nov 26) evening in Rio Grande City. We are talking about complete break. Took to hospital at McAllen Medical via ambulance. They told her they would take care the next day (on Tues). They had her ready for surgery like -no food, fluid restriction etc. Did not happen Tues. Wed rolls around and they said Dr. has many patients ahead of her, so more wait. In the meantime she doesn't even know who the Dr. operating will be. So, it was thought that Thursday had to be. But they wanted to put it off again. Her son finally called another Dr. and finally surgery was started. Imagine hanging around the hospital with your arm dangling for 3 days. All the while they are sticking her with deductible and the insurance with hospital stay costs. Hope everything turn out good, but after surgery, need her to run out of there. It can only be explained by money hunger, incompetent staff. Think it's money first, patient health third. How anyone survives treatment like this is beyond me. BTW. I thought I would maybe write a letter explaining my grievance, but the entire website of the Hospital did not say who was in charge. Checked other hospital website and noticed that the CEO offers welcoming messages. Hurry people, per their website there is a 6 min wait time in Emergency Room. It's like those calls to customer service that answer quickly but put you on hold. read more

Death trap. Our grandmother went in for abdominal pain, and got a bacterial infection from a lab tech (or nurse's) inept ability to keep patients safe. He went to draw blood, dropped the container on the floor and still used it to draw blood. She contracted a bacterial infection from the procedure. The communication from the doctors and nurses is horrible. They're more interested in getting out of there instead of caring for the patients they've been entrusted to get better. read more

My father (91 years old) has been in and out of another local hospital. This time I decided to try McAllen Medical Center because the other hospital was not up to par with providing care for him. Not my opinion, facts. They lacked so much in coordination of care. I've always like this other hospital, but I will never return. My dad had been at MMC YEARS ago and wasn't truly impressed BUT they have stepped up their care. They are doing something very right! I can almost imagine the training they have invested into their staff! It shows!!! The nurses are professional, caring, and very knowledgeable. I could ask any question and they knew the answer. That impressed me because the entire 5th floor was full the whole time we were there. (8 days). They were busy but that did not deter them from taking the time to speak to us and answer questions. The coordination of care ROCKED!! Everyone knew what they had to do, the timeline to do it and it got done. Like clockwork!! I was so happy. It made a very stressful situation more bearable. We had round the clock caregiver with my dad and everyone agreed that MMC made this stay so much better in every way. I recommend MMC. They are a tier 2 hospital and that achievement did not come easy. But they have EARNED it!! Keep up the great work MMC!!!!!!!! Worst Covid-19 family support ever! They do not call to give daily updates about your loved one. You can call, but they usually don't answer. Doctor performed surgery and never called us to let us know how the surgery went. Nobody even called to tell us our loved one was out of surgery. I finally couldn't take it any more and called recovery. Thankfully someone answered. Was informed our loved one had been out of surgery for 2 hours. It's been two days since then and every day it is a struggle to get them to answer the telephone to let us know how our loved one is doing since they are in ICU and can't call. It is pure h-e double toothpicks waiting for information from an organization that is holding our loved one hostage and won't let us see them or know how they are doing. We used to like this hospital, but not now! Someone needs to be fired and new procedures need to be put in place. I would give them no stars for the covid-19 protocol but I'm forced to give at least one to get this posted. read more

This might be a rambling review but I have a few things to comment on. I had to take my wife to the STHS ER in Mission. When we arrived we were greeted by two young volunteers. They were excellent in all respects. No ER personnel were immediately available but the two volunteers try to assist us and to alert the ER teams. The ER Doctor was most excellent. After he confirmed his diagnosis of "a large kidney stone" he immediately went to work to get her to the proper place for the best place to manage her pain until she could get the stone removed. An excellent EMT team transported her to the ER at MMC. The nursing staff at the ER was excellent. Very caring team. Brad is a compleat professional. Yvette was also very professional and did everything she could to manage my wife's pain. As soon as possible she was transferred to her room in 6 west. Her nurse was Reuben. Another very professional RN. He set the mark for the nursing staff that followed. Liz relieved Reuben. She had a daisy and it was quickly apparent why she was given that reward. She had the pleasure of being care for two separate shifts by Orly. A dedicated nurse with an old school attitude of service and appearance combined with a nature desire to give his patients the best of the best. Ishmael was next. He was quick to keep us updated and had an encouraging empathy of caring. There were numerous CNA's supporting the RN's. All of them were dedicated professionals. I want to give Dr. Berkman honorable mention in this review and will provide a separate review for his laudable service. read more
