Andy and Karen Burnham bought the place several years ago and have worked very hard to make the place at home for you. They live in the place in the wintertime when it can get down to 60 below and they only have a wood fireplace to rely on for warmth. A brief history of the place; it was a lodge 3 brothers from Michigan founded in the 1940's and built themselves with blood, sweat, and tears, which is what it took for an enterprising person to make it there back then to not get cold or hungry. Andy and Karen took it over making it a showplace and still working on it. There's a display of vintage typewriters and appliances in a room in the lodge and a nice selection of sundries and reading material. And the outside has old International trucks from the 1940's on display still in running condition. For food and drink, they serve their famous roadkill chili with a selection of squirrel, porcupine, and muskrat depending on what day it is. And wood fire pizzas to include supreme, meat lovers, pepperoni, or chili. Better than what you'll get at the average pizzeria in Alaska. The bar has a nice selection of flavored whiskeys, canned local mixed drinks, and the basic traditional stuff. It is expensive, but a lot of logistics and expenses are involved to get the stuff there. As for RV'ing in itself, perfect! All the sites are near the nicely flowing Tolsona Creek. Whether you like to fish or not, it's a pleasant view. Anyway, we've been there 3 times already in the past 2 years. I want the place to remain a secret, but at the same time want the owners to enjoy the bounty of their hard work and the place continue to flourish, maybe eventually it'll become a popular winter lodge as well with the cabins.

Bunch kids came in for ice cream and he was not happy to cater to them but assumed he did as I left due to his social skills. Got up early next morning and packed up drove down to showers and instead of parking on the road out front drove behind the building on the gravel road. When finishing up my shower and brushing teeth Andy pounds on the two doors as this shower building have me and a elderly lady next door. I opened door as I was trying to tidy up bit around sink and was getting total harassed for parking behind building as apparently the septic tank was under the road. He walked me around building to show me how someone else had hit the building from driving around before and I just responded that I know how to drive. There was no sign to identify this he continues to go off on me at 7AM and I even apologized but this did not calm the man at the least even though I had no idea I did wrong. So as I putting my items in truck and forgot my towel and saving kit with all my supplies other than my clothes bag on the hook in the washroom/ shower room. The other older lady just quickly walked away from the situation. Felt bad for her as she was also innocent bystander. He then drives over to my site and then came back and started on me again because as a courtesy I shut off the power breakers at my site post. He said you keep shutting the power off to the site beside you even through I had 14 I think and site beside me had #15 apparently 15 was fed from #14 again I had no idea and no sign or blocking of breakers for the other site who did have there own post. Guess with just a number on it but fed from mine. Unless you are full psychic I would not recommend staying at this place to be fully off the handle harassed but of no known fault of your own. When I arrived at my next location that evening I realized I had left all my toiletries and towel behind and Epi pen and sent email so I could pick it up next day passing back through and was told by Andy's wife that she did not see anything when she was cleaning up washrooms that day and not one turned in the items. I responded with after my experience I think I have good idea as to where my items went and explained to her that Andy has burn out which I did running my business and also and needed to get out. She respectively responded and said that Andy would not do that. What do you think? Fellow campers wanted my wet towel and tooth brush. She was very nice when I Was there and did respond to both my emails but if anyone's knows anyone's true colors it would be his wife. I have left this response for over week hoping that I would be contacted even though I'm long gone heading to Ontario that my items have been recovered but I quite sure my first thought of the items was correct but again I am not the psychic you need to be to understand requirements necessary to satisfy Andy thoughts.

What a great campground!! We were looking to head north to close out our summer camping festivities…read moreand stumbled upon Tolsona Wilderness Campground online. It's a rather large campground with water and electric at many sites, along with a single dump station in the common area. Every site is along the River, which is fabulous too. In all reality, I don't think there are any bad spots, but we liked ours, which was away from the common areas. While we loved seeing all the kids playing on the playground and the creek, we were there for the peace & quiet. We appreciated being able to book online. The map showed us spots where our rig would fit and that was helpful, although we weren't able to fit in the spot requested after all. I walked to the office to see about another site and they were very accommodating. Turns out my husband saw a site that would be perfect and not only was it available, it was indeed perfect!!! We took note of the spot number and will definitely be requesting that spot again. In the common area, there is the office, which has snacks and campground memorabilia, there is a coffee shack with snacks, playground and picnic are. They also rent float tubes for the creek. While there is limited WiFi, there is no cell service and the WiFi doesn't reach the majority of the grounds. If you must have reception, I highly recommend you bring your Starlink. They do a family theme every weekend apparently... which we were unaware of. It was a little odd when we saw campsites with Halloween decorations in August followed by children in costumes coming to our site to trick or treat. We didn't love strangers strolling through our campsite as we were trying to decompress for the weekend and ended up feeling obligated to share our weekend treats, which selfishly was annoying, but at the same time, adorable to see the grateful children's faces light up! We'll definitely be back... next time I'll check their calendar to see what the festivities are if we don't want to partake, I'll figure out some way to make notice of that at our site.

The other…read morelodge on lake Louise which we had stayed at once before was booked and we had to find other options which brought us to this lodge. It was a blessing in disguise because this lodge was exponentially better! This is a family run business and their hospitality was excellent. From giving us pointers where to ice fish, making a complementary breakfast for guests in the morning, to just chatting with us on how they got to be the lodge owners. They were genuinely nice people! They did a fun auction for New Years and were giving out awesome prizes, we actually ended up winning an awesome hunting and survival knife kit! We are big on ice fishing and it was cool that almost everyone there was there to ice fish like us and we had a good time meeting other couples and groups and talking about what everyone was catching and using for bait and where they were on the lake! We got one fairly large lake trout and two huge burbot not even 50 yards from the front of the lodge. (Which was nice because we don't have a snow machine) We booked the queen size bed room and were very pleased with the accommodations. We are local Alaskans and don't have incredibly high expectations but the bed was comfortable enough for us and the room was basic but perfect for what we were using the lodge for. We would highly recommend this lodge and we plan on going back!

The rooms were ok, although the smell of glade was beyond intense, the lack of restrooms or water in the rooms was tolerable, the guest restrooms outback were a little gross and made my eyes burn, but I wasn't expecting much.. The owners however were super unprofessional. From double charging me, to making it my problem to fix, to complaining to me about everything in their life under the sun, to badmouthing hotels.com, other guests etc. etc. I just didn't need any of that on our stay there, and should have been a sign to go somewhere else, but I knuckled through it. The icing on the cake however, was being Attacked by her dog outside my room while using the guest restrooms... Yes, attacked. As in, I'm a fully grown man, dog owner/lover myself, and ended up having to drive to urgent care to stem the blood flowing from open wounds on my leg deep enough to stick your fingers in. Hey, stuff happens right...I'm a big boy. You try to put yourself in other people's shoes and do the right thing, but its also all about the people you're dealing with.. What was the owners response? Denial, even though it happened feet from their door, and I'm bleeding all over their floor. The dog evidently was also super aggressive to another person who was staying there that we spoke with, and then I found out it bit someone else. Did they comp any part of my stay? No. In fact, I was double charged. Have they made good on their promise to get me some shot records on the dog? Nope. Have they bothered to call me back a single time to check on me? No. It's a week and a half later folks, and I'm done trying. My wife and I have left messages until their machine was full, have left a message with their front desk / family member who runs the store, have facebook messaged them, and they haven't called me back once. Great customer service. An apology would have gone a long way here. Not only did I find out that she lied to me when she said the dog has never bitten anyone before, but they're completely ghosting me? The customer? I'm not a tourist, I'm in Eureka A LOT and so are lots of my snowmachine friends. I am pursuing this now that they've decided to do nothing, and I am recommending anyone who knows me boycott this place. Gunsight Mountain Lodge is TRASH. Stay at the Eureka Lodge or Sheep Mountain Lodge, or anywhere else but here. This place is owned by people who lack any semblance of character, or decency, and as much as I like to root for local business owners; they deserve to lose their business.

We loved the peaceful setting, the comfortable beds, and the beautiful mountain views from both the windows and the front porch. Breakfast was excellent and well worth the price. We tried the Palmer Farmers Omelet, Solstice Scramble, Breakfast Burrito, Halibut Benedict, and Sheep Mountain Pancakes. Everything was good, but the standouts were the Solstice Scramble and the Halibut Benedict. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and flavorful. The only downside was that their espresso machine was down, and the drip coffee was just okay. Dinner was decent but felt a bit overpriced. We had the smoked salmon spread, Olympia halibut cakes, meatloaf, grilled halibut, grilled salmon, and roast chicken. Everything was cooked well, just not particularly memorable. Service was friendly and attentive, and we never waited long to be seated for dinner.

The main building where you go for dinner is pretty classy, i have to say, and fortunately, it's not crammed with tons of stuff on the walls. Less is more, in my opinion. Our server seated us at the far end away from the bar, and we had a good view of the mountains. I honestly wasn't feeling super hungry, so i decided to go for a couple of appetizers. I ordered the Crab, Spinach, and Artichoke dip with bread, and the Fry Basket. Blake got a Burger entree. I was presented with a medium skillet of dip, and eight pieces of bread, and an enormous tray/basket of fries. I ordered appetizers, as I thought they'd be smaller bites but these were enormous, and i admit to feeling somewhat daunted by the amount of food. The Dip was beautifully creamy, and the bread nicely toasted. Very moreish. Blake says I'm gonna get gout. The fries were wonderfully crispy. I was putting them between the slices of bread (What us English call a "chip butty") and smearing crab, spinach, artichoke dip all over it. I was pretty disgusting, i admit it. But the meager amount that i was able to eat, i did enjoy it. This would easily feed 2 people. I don;t know about the rest of the appetizers, but these 2 are definitely sharing plates - so a word to the wise. His Burger entree wasn't nearly so large as my 2 appetizers lol. But anyway, I would definitely come back, and in hindsight, I'd order differently than i did this time, because we had an enormous amount of food, and not an enormous amount of appetite. The hostess/owner of the business was on site and assisted greatly with some basic needs I forgot back at home, such as plates and utensils for the grill. They have two gas grills on site as well as a charcoal grill next to each cabin. They have a covered pavilion with an indoor firepit. Wood is for sale for $8. Each cabin is equipped with a coffee maker, a very small TV, and the lodge also offers complimentary K-cups and DVDs for rent. I cannot speak for the RV experience, but this is a great place to stay if you're on your way to or from Anchorage, or if you just want to get away for the weekend. Highly recommended.

I ate my sausage and toast but that was it. Coffee was good too. I imagine in the summer when it's busier, they have things prepped in advance... at least I hope so. $20+ per meal is a bit much when it's that bad.
