But unless it's 10pm and you're exhausted, there's no reason to grab your alcohol or your cheese here, with Appellation Wines and Mellis just down the road (granted, in complete opposite directions). But for your run of the mill finds? Definitely a solid choice of standard chain grocers out of your usual suspects in the area.

There was I believing that Margiotta was an exclusively Marchmont establishment, but how little I know! This Margiotta is a bit like a tardis - much bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. I expected to find it to be the size of a small cornershop, but instead it was like a rabbit warren of many different sections. It has the amounts of produce that you would expect from a small supermarket rather than a local cornershop. As with all of the branches of Margiotta, the prices are high. Even compared to Tesco, the prices were a fair bit more. A 500g box of Rice Krispies was £2.49 for example. Whilst the quality may be good, you are paying for that. It's not the sort of place that I would choose to do a week's shopping at, as with a 24 hour Asda down the road, I know where I would go. For good quality local convenience, Margiotta is unlikely to be bettered. If you travel a bit further, you will find the same things for a lower price. So don't be sucked in without checking all of the competition!

You can get pretty much everything you could need in margiotta's, it sells all the usual brand name stuff, so handy if you run out of bread, milk or bottle of juice. Where Margiotta's beats other corner shops is their excellent range of ready meals, from sandwiches, to freshly prepared salads, to pastries and tubs of olives! All the ready meal type items I believe are made locally for them, so feel fresher and better quality. Yes, you pay a bit more, but the food is good and if you're in a corner shop you tend to be looking for convenience rather than bargains!

There is a good variety of almost everything that you could suddenly get a craving for: crisps, chocolate, sandwiches, pastries and traditional homebakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks. For emergency breakfasts (and other meals) there is a good stock of bacon, sausages, eggs and cold meats. The prices, while not being strikingly cheap, are generally what you'd expect from a small convenience store such as this. One tip though, if the price is not marked on the packaging and you can't see it displayed, best to ask before purchase to avoid nasty shocks... It also seems to be rather short of the deals similar stores nearby offer. The owner is very friendly and quickly recognises and converses with any regulars. He was kind enough to save cardboard boxes for my girlfriend when she started packing to move flat. Amir and Sons is certainly one of the safer bets when it comes to using a convenience store in this area.

It doesn't have a huge selection but it ticks the box on most of the basics (though their icecream selection is pitiful).
