Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

This is a brand new McDonald's and I recommend you take a look, from the stunning open seating area…read moreto the overpowering play area this place has it all. I began my morning by waking up at 9, after I was ready I stumbled across to Stricklandgate and waited a full 30 mins in the line to get in. Dead on 12 the door swung open to a "new paint" smell and to 3 members of staff eager to let us in. We all ran to be first in line but then stopped to admire the fine architecture from the tiled walls to the sandy oak wood floor, I felt welcome and the staff seemed to enjoy serving me too. Now... on to the food. I ordered the big tasty burger and I have to say it impressed me a lot, the bacon was crispy yet not over cooked, the lettuce had a distinct crunch which complemented the onions ever so well and the patty was so big I could not eat all of it and so I took some home for the dog. My one gripe with the food however was the fact that the fries lacked the crunch that I have became a custom to, but I think that may be because the oil in the fryer had been changed. I believe that McDonald's are leading the fast food industry into the future and this restaurant is one of the best I have seen so far

I have to say, im glad i did. The serving staff were very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. The food was slightly above the expected McDonald's quality (or perhaps the quality staff just made it seem that way?). The service was very fast and efficient. And, though several people left their tables and floor area in a terrible state while I was there, the lady cleaning the tables was so lovely, tirelessly cleaning up people's messes in spite of customers with bad manners. Seriously exceeded expectations. I'd give them 6 stars if i could. I was there just before 8pm on Tue 20 June. McDonald's ought to give the whole shift a bonus. If every McDonald's staff was as good as these guys, I'd probably become a McDonald's regular again!

It isn't a huge menu, but we liked the look of it, so we thought we would come back for dinner. When we came back sometime after 7 p.m. there were two ladies at a table in the window, but basically we had our choice of table. My friend had the Tattie Pot and his fiancee and I had the Wild Game Pie. I chose to have mine with mashed potatoes and veg, while she had mushy peas instead of veg. The food certainly looked good. Phil didn't like his food in the ramekin/casserole dish, so he dumped it out onto the plate. The pastry on the pie was a bit thick because it took me awhile to get into the main part of the pie. There was not a lot of filling and it was hard to taste the meat as it seemed like the spices had overpowered the meat itself. I have had rabbit and venison before, but I have never had pheasant and I was looking forward to tasting it, but it was a bit useless to try and figure it out. I will say that their mashed potatoes were fantastic. They were creamy and lovely with the gravy. Helen agreed with me on the pie. Even though we were stuffed, we couldn't pass up dessert... so Phil had the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Helen had the Grasmere Gingerbread Cheesecake, and I had the Cartmel Sticky Chocolate Pudding. All of them were good, and I was completely content with mine. I love their Sticky Toffee Pudding and it is unusual for me to order the steamed Chocolate Puddings because I find them just too much, and while this one was rich, it was just right. I was trying to analyze the flavour... use of dark chocolate maybe... whatever it is, I love it. I think we all agreed that while we might not come back for a main meal, we'd definitely stop in for a pudding!
