Sunday was the launch of XP at the Mockingbird Theatre. This is a geek themed event held once a night and is a bit of a mecca for all things board game, computer game, quiz and film orientated. Naturally we had to go. I am currently on a bootcamp scheme (see http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fit-body-bootcamp-birmingham for info), meaning I am on a strict diet of proteins, fats and No carbs. After consuming a smoothie for my breakfast and a salad for my lunch, I was starving hungry by 5pm. Everyone seemed to be either ordering pizza (a major no-no for me) or heading to Subway for their tea. I thought neither of these would be an option before a helpful person mentioned that Subway did salad bowls, problem solved... Or so I thought. Despite having all of the components of salad, Subway in Digbeth DON'T do salad bowls (and their staff are pretty unhelpful too). In a major grump, I left the store to see what else was on offer on the street. Right next door I came across Mother Clucker. Firstly, they scored a point for having a name that made me snigger, secondly... They couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. After a quick peruse of the menu I opted for lemon and herb chicken (which is served without skin). I asked if I could have some salad with this, after looking at me strangely for a minute - the guy said "Sure, we can do that. It'll be no extra charge". Winner. The chicken was cooked fresh for me as I waited and I requested some lettuce, onion and chillies (all I could have). I was even warned that the salad might be a bit rubbish as it's predominently meant for burgers, but I thought it was sweet that they warned me. My diet friendly feast was a budget busting £3.50. The guys that did end up going to Subway ended up pretty jealous of my dinner after all. This new kid on the block is sparkling clean, very friendly and super helpful. Will I be back? You can bet your bottom dollar I will.

What stood out most was the quality of the beef, the most tender, succulent cut of ground meat you can ever hope for, and grilled to perfection. I don't get overly excited about burgers, but this was the apex and I thought I had died and gone to burger heaven. All this is a very charming, tasteful pub in the Cotswolds countryside. Comfortable, cozy and oh so pleasant. We came for lunch just after noon at seated in the restaurant. We were given a choice of that or the pub/bar section. I washed it down with a pint of Cotswold Pale Ale... a great choice with the lunch. Service was professional, friendly and fun. They were very engaged and thoughtful and I highly recommend going out of your way to visit and enjoy this establishment.

Lunchtime at Annie's is very *very* busy and loud, so if that's not your thing, you may want to visit slightly later in the afternoon. If you do, turn up early and wait for opening time / reserve a table just in case. As for the rest: The Good: The burgers were great - we weren't asked how we wanted them cooked, they were just sent out just-so. I wasn't sure whether I'd like this, but I did. The beer was good too, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The place was very clean, service was fast and they had decent Guinness on tap. The Bad: The plates could have been bigger - if you're eating a burger that you have to deconstruct in order to consume, you need a little room, and these plates didn't have that. The glasses were old and scuffed too, which wasn't a good look. The Ugly: We were told that we couldn't leave a tip with our card. It's 2019 and we couldn't leave a tip with a card. I left all the cash I had, which wasn't near what the staff deserved, and though the food was good, I still had a nasty taste in my mouth. Hopefully they'll change this policy and I can remove this paragraph and upgrade my review to the ***** that Annie's deserves.

The restaurant specializes in "American" burgers, but as Americans, we honestly thought what we got was above most burgers we've had in the U.S.! The bun, bacon, spicy chili jam, and melted cheese were nearly placed and flavorful with the juicy but not overly greasy patty. The Cajun fries were cooked and seasoned to perfection, and the black garlic sauce (£1) was yummy. The beers were good, different from others we've had. I finally got my foot in the door a couple of days ago and was surprised at how such a quirky, hipster restaurant can fit in so smoothly with this historical town. The decor was mismatched with random chairs, tables and photos of animals.From peering through the window the place looked cramped but once inside you realise there's a whole other back section to the restaurant tucked around the corner giving a great view of the kitchen. The menus were pegged onto string and were hung around the place giving easy access to a menu at all times, clever! Once seated, I opted for a portion of sweet potato fries and a Smoky Joe burger that contained BBQ sauce, bacon and a slice of cheddar cheese all on a beer patty. Both of these were really tasty but I struggled to finish the over-the-top portion sizes we were given and had to eat the burger with my knife and fork instead of using my hands. Our waitress was friendly and attentive which was a fairly easy job with only two tables to wait on, the place was almost empty.
