Braidwood Dunes is a natural area on the edge of this little town that makes a good walk for…read moreawhile. It isn't that long to get around, so it's good for those with only about an hour. Pretty much nothing much is happening around here, but it's all just nature. Check out the grassland and forest. The preserve is much bigger than just the part with a trail. An important thing is knowing where the trail goes. It only loops around a small area of the preserve. There's a lot more than just this. For the part with the trail, it starts off in the parking lot. This is just a small lot with dirt and gravel, so it's not a big attraction around here if that wasn't already obvious. Also this preserve is close to peoples' homes. You can hear them while on the trails and think there's someone else walking these, but they're actually just residents. Be careful to not go too far off or you'll be in someone's backyard. There's also a pond but this is too far off the trail to get to from here. Good place to look around maybe an hour if even. It's a good chance you'll be the only one here. There's people in town who don't even know about it, so it's a well preserved nature preserve.

There is a lot of trash around. Forget about sleeping at night, as the drunks own the night and hoot and holler until the wee hours. The bathhouse is DISGUSTING. Needs to be remodeled in a bad way. The beach is slowing getting taken over by seaweed. So when you are swimming you spend your time dodging seaweed. Some areas are not even swimable. The shoreline will sometimes be full of stinky seaweed.

For a small annual fee you can become a member of this private club. At the end of the trail at Marseilles, IL there is a replica canal about that you can take a ride on and learn some of the history of the canal and area.

You arrive, hop in a large van that takes you maybe 10-15 mins away to the entry point of the river, there are 50+ colorful tubes to choose from (with options for various headrests, cup holders, solid bottom, mesh bottom, open bottom). Plus you can rent a paddle ($5, I suggest 1-2 per group, totally worth it!) and you can rent a separate tube to hold your cooler, sunscreen, speaker, etc. They have really friendly staff to help you in the water, help you out at the end, they tell you what to expect and how long it will likely take given the speed of the river. You get hooked together with just your group, so even if 15 people are signed up for the same time slot, it's not like all 15 of you are lumped together the whole time. You're in a circle with just your people or you can float solo! This is a company that cares and you can tell. I've done it a few times and will absolutely return again!!

We checked in around 1145 for a 12 pm booking. They did not have a specific spot to stand to wait for shuttles. As a result, it was a free for all and people that arrived well after us got on shuttles first. My friend politely asked where to stand and staff became overwhelmed. We did not end up on a shuttle until almost 1 pm. Then during loading, the van door was broken and the group had to exit the front passenger door. Our driver was trying to direct other staff with their jobs too. It seemed that staff were unsure of their job responsibilities. I will say the tubes they provide are very high quality and you have various choices of styles. Unfortunately, due to weather, our group was told that we couldn't get into the river. (That did not lose stars from me, that's out of their control). The staff told us we would be provided refunds and a shuttle back to our cars. Since there was a lot of us waiting to get in to the river, our group had to wait for second shuttle. If they could improve their check in process, and safety of their vehicles, I would consider giving them another chance.

The scenery is nicer in the fall when the landscapers keep the wild brush high and wheat makes an appearance. Traveling to 3 is not as safe as it could be with rotting steps and a steep decline down on rocks. The rub on 4 is trying to stay out of the thickets on the left with thorns everywhere.Tricky design leads you wandering looking for holes- 5- with no signs posted. The shortest hole is only 100 feet and a straight shot, so this is best opportunity to score yourself an ace for your bag.
