We've lived in town for a few years, but we hadn't understood the full value of this store until we bought a home that was in desperate need of a complete gutting and remodel. Here's why we shop at McLean's: 1. OUTSTANDING customer service with people who know where things are, and KNOW how to get things done! I have asked so many questions, received so much good advice, and I am certain that our home wouldn't be as far along as it is today without the help of the men and women who work in this store. Joe, Gary, Nancy, Cathy, Terri, Kip, Jeremy, Jessica, Alyssa, Celina...the list goes on and on. They've even helped me find solutions, multiple times, that didn't require me spending a penny in store! 2. UNBELIEVABLE selection of products. They probably carry what you're looking for, and if not, they'll tell you where you can get it. (More than once I've been told to head to another store to get a product they didn't stock...who does that??). Whether it's lumber, hardware, tools, or some miscellaneous bolt that you need to prevent a barn door from sliding off its rails (for real!), they have it. 3. LOCAL employees, local owners, and this is a company that invests in the community. They hire a lot of teenagers and work with their school and sports schedules like few other companies do. One of our kids worked for them and we couldn't believe how well they paid her, and how graciously they worked with her athletic and academic schedules. Locally owned matters. 4. COMPETITIVE pricing to go with their significant inventory. Sure, you can occasionally save money on certain products by hitting up the big box stores, but not having to drive 35 minutes (each way), or not having to try and find someone to help answer your questions (seriously...McLean's staff are plentiful and their experience is unmatched!) is worth a few extra dollars. 5. FREE popcorn. yeah, if you were on the fence before you now have a reason to make this store your go-to for hardware and lumber. You can't be sad and eat popcorn at the same time. McLeans is pricier than the big box stores but it's a nice downtown Kalkaska business with a very helpful team. I always start here and if I cannot find it here I'll make the trip to a big box store. I highly recommend this store! read more

We decided to stop at this store on our way to Traverse City. The outside of the store looked do bright and cheery, it was begging for is to stop. The inside had a lot of goodies in it! Everything was all neatly arranged and well stocked. No empty pegs that we could see. There were a lot of really cute hummingbird feeders. I love hummingbird feeders and really wanted to get one, but my nervousness on becoming a hummingbird feeder/ yard ornament hoarder stopped me. There were tools galore, sprinklers, garden supplies and seeds, and snacks! I was going to grab a bag of snacks but The hubs reined me in. For a small space. They had everything very neatly organized. I would stop into this store again on my way to or from Traverse City. One of the better hardware stores I've seen, and their prices weren't all over the place. read more

This place has everything you could ever want for your home and garden. Many times I have found items here that would have cost me a few cents more at Home Depot. My dad came up from Lansing to help us do some home improvements and he was impressed by the selection of items and the prices. They have popcorn for their customers so you can munch while you shop and they always have the same lady at the check out who seems to know all of the locals. It's a nice small-town hardware store. McLean's hardware in Kalkaska is the community hardware store. I have never received poor customer service from employees at the store. Employees have even stayed late on a Sunday to make sure I could finish my project. Every employee calls me by name and I enjoy my visits there because of the customer service I receive in the store, rental and lumber yard. Keep up the great work. read more

We just bought a cabin near by and have been going here a lot. They have everything you need and more. Normally I drag my feet to go into a hardware but this was has plenty of things for me to look at while my fiancé is getting the things we need. He has found everything he has needed here, even speciality items. The prices are reasonable as well. read more

The worst customer service I've ever received. Asked for help with a plumbing project (bathtub drain in the home we just bought was rotted away and we couldn't get it out) and the response was a very snide "We don't carry magic tools". We'll drive into Mancelona from here on out to get what need. read more
