Paid twice as much as I would have in a supermarket for bread they should be ashamed of selling. Never again. OK, but it's a farm stand, so how's the produce? In the past I've found it to be a mixed picture. First you need to realize that, despite the fact that they're a farm stand, most of the produce that they're selling is not their own or necessarily even local. So for a lot of things you're just paying more than you would at a supermarket for the exactly the same stuff. If you stick to the items that they mark as "our own," well, generally I've had no issues with the quality, but again, the prices can be pretty high for what you're getting. Over the years I've been going to Lull less and less often for that reason alone -- I want to buy local but when everything costs twice as much as at MB, it just doesn't seem worthwhile. (Aren't farm stands supposed to be *cheaper* because they cut out the middleman?) Anyway, after today's bread fail I've had it; don't plan on going back.

Pick up was Wednesday afternoon with everything you'd expect from a traditional American Thanksgiving meal: White turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, green bean casserole, gravy, cranberry sauce and roll. Everything was packed up nicely. Would do it again. I must say, their pumpkin pie was the star of the day. I've had many of those in my years and without a doubt, this is the best I ever had. We all know these calves are taken from their mothers who are inside the barns hooked up to milk machines and the calves are sold for veal. This is farm abuse! The owner said that the Farmer's Market was too hard to run--she had to go and get the products from the farmers and stock it herself, and it was just too difficult to do. So, she's phasing out the market and just focusing on the natural beauty products. Amherst does have a Farmer's Market at the town square on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 6:30 (?) from May to ???? I visited the market last week, and there were about 8 vendors. There was NO produce (too early, I suppose). There was one vendor selling fresh fish off the boat. Apparently, she was sold out by 4:30 p.m. so get there early! Other vendors included a local winery, a cake/cupcake maker, a soap maker, a jewelry maker, a baker (breads and pastries) and a few others. I'm hoping that the market draws more vendors later in the growing season.

There are a couple points to note. 1. There wren't any honey crisp left. They have three rows, and all but three trees were picked clean. 2. There were plenty of red delicious, mcintosh, empire, and gala. 3. There are a smattering of their other varieties: cortland, macoun, maybe another. The apples were a little smaller than I'm used to, but they tasted just as good. Bonus: Anheuser-Busch Brewery is pretty darn close by.

Charming and quaint in spades, it's also the perfect size to take kids with you apple picking. The orchards are a short walk from the main building. The fields themselves are big enough to roam, but not so gigantic you get lost on the way. They also make their own delicious cider, and the pumpkin butter is delicious. I have a friend who swears by the ready-to-bake apple pies.

In addition to farmers, there's also a stand for Amherst's Labelle Wine, a few local bakers bring their best cakes and pastries, there's a popcorn stand, a woman who sells weaved items and another who sells jewelry, candles and other homemade gifts. I wish they had more farm stand offerings but the variety offered there every saturday morning makes it feel more like a fair than a farmers market. I never know what I'm going to come home with.

They also have baked goods and....chicken pies, among other items. So...we decided to try a Chicken Pie. The price was $ 24.99 although we had to ask as the pies were not individually priced and there was no sign to tell you either. The result is the pie has chunks of dark and light chicken with literally no sauce. It was extremely expensive, and don't get me wrong I don't mind paying when something is really delicious. But this pie was far, far from that. I also thought the vegetables they sell were very expensive as well. Not a place I would return to.
