Apple-picking here is the one thing I look forward to once fall and harvest season rolls around. It's family run and they are so nice and willing to show you where you can find the best apples. The grounds are very scenic and well-maintained but if you have problems walking amongst hilly terrain, stick to the lower orchards. They also have a small farm stand with their own veggies and also locally made honey and maple syrup. I also noticed on their website that they offere a reasonably priced "harvest subscription" (bascially like a CSA). I actually went here today as a matter of fact!! Day two of their season. Got a bushel of (delicious) Paula Reds, 2 heirloom tomatoes, and 4 (very fresh) ears of corn. They also had squash and mini-pumpkins along with other kinds of tomatoes. Once Halloween gets closer, they will have quite the selection of pumpkins. I highly recommend this orchard- whether it's just yourself or the whole family. :)

Monadnock. Fog half-covered the mountain this morning, which was very dramatic. At Rosaly's I got to do something I've never done before: hand-pick my own flowers from a professional garden. They give you a pair of scissors and some water in a bucket, and let you go to town. Flowers are $12 for a dollar. I picked myself silly and spent only about $3. They also offer pick-your-own herbs as well as a sweet little selection of fruit and tourist toys. What a place!

In the past I've found it to be a mixed picture. First you need to realize that, despite the fact that they're a farm stand, most of the produce that they're selling is not their own or necessarily even local. So for a lot of things you're just paying more than you would at a supermarket for the exactly the same stuff. If you stick to the items that they mark as "our own," well, generally I've had no issues with the quality, but again, the prices can be pretty high for what you're getting. Over the years I've been going to Lull less and less often for that reason alone -- I want to buy local but when everything costs twice as much as at MB, it just doesn't seem worthwhile. The price was $ 24.99 although we had to ask as the pies were not individually priced and there was no sign to tell you either. The result is the pie has chunks of dark and light chicken with literally no sauce. It was extremely expensive, and don't get me wrong I don't mind paying when something is really delicious. But this pie was far, far from that. I also thought the vegetables they sell were very expensive as well. Not a place I would return to.

I'm so frustrated with Barrett Hill Farm. I ordered a CSA ahead of the season... took them two…read moreweeks to get back to me... so I should have known better. For the first three weeks, they had no idea who I was, and I had to argue with the attendant about how I had already purchased a CSA. At least then, the attendant got to know me and after a few weeks had it straightened out with a CSA share ready for me to pick up. For the last six weeks though, there is never a CSA share prepared... instead the new attendant tells me that I can pick anything from the store up to $20. Except not the breads. Or any of the jams or jellies. Or the flowers. Or the pickles. So not 50% of the store. I can pick from the meats and the veggies... which in theory would be ok... except that by the time I get there in the evening, it's all pretty picked over, and there's little left except bruised and stunted leftovers. In addition, the share they put together the first few weeks was a lot bigger than the $20 allotment they're telling me I can have now. The whole point of a CSA is that I get a SHARE of the harvest! That's the agreement! That's why it's a preorder! I should be able to come after work, pick up my sectioned off share, and be out of there in 5 minutes, not spend 20 minutes trying to pick through what's leftover after a busy day. I feel ripped off and duped, since I specifically did not choose the voucher system because I know I can't get to the stand until the end of the day, and I knew I would be left with just leftovers if I was left to choose for myself. Calling the business line gets you nowhere. No one ever picks up. This place is great if you're just stopping by, early in the day, while the pickin' is still good. But avoid the CSA. Their pick-it-yourself patch might be great. But late in the day? Or using the CSA? Go somewhere else.
