I like to thank EVERYONE at the store for the help and respect they handled my problem. I was on vacation overseas. 4 days into my trip I had major stroke I was amble to communicate after sometime and I remembered that I had a heirloom watch given for reair. I contacted the shope from my hospital bed and explained that I was .paralyzed on my left side and due to IATA regulations was unable to fly. They eased my mind . And now after 1-1/2 year today I have my watch. I also like to say I have been a customer since 1989 , as a seller and a gift buyer. The location is also better than Church str!! My Mother & I have shopped here for over 60 years. Yesterday, I had a bad experience and will not return. In August, I purchased a gold bracelet. I wore it a few times and then the clasp broke. I returned to McTamney's, and the clerk agreed to replace the clasp. When I picked up the bracelet yesterday, I was shocked by a bill of $130 for the clasp & labour. It's not the amount but the fact that it's their product which broke. Turns out because the goods are pre-owned, they will only stand by their products for 14 days. That's it! I value customer experience and am amazed that a store with such long standing history, does not provide a better experience. I complained and the best the clerk offered was for me to pay 50% of the repair bill, for the broken product from their store. Very disappointed. Will take my business elsewhere. read more

Very disappointed! Started off with a beautiful opal ring that was given to me by my grandmother from the owner's of McTamney's. I inherited it and lost opals throughout the years and was told that the claws were worn down due to age, and it should be rebuilt. I continued to replace them until two years ago. I thought it would be cool to take it back to its original location. I asked for two quotes - one for just replacing the opals, the other to take a mold and rebuild the ring. I elected to go with the rebuilding. No other communication between the store/jeweller and myself occurred until I was told the ring was ready. I went with great excitement, only to be disappointed. Rings in the pictures, from left to right, show the original (without opals as McTamney's removed them), McTamney's "rebuilt" one and one I had made from a small jeweller in the Town where I live. You can see how wide their band is, the claws catch on everything and it lies very flat. Myself, family and friends all say it looks like a man's ring. It is very much a ring that was made without taking a mold and their jeweller took the liberty to make their own rendition or just sourced out a 5 opal ring. I asked if it could be redone and they refused. I even asked to see the mold and they couldn't. I then suggested they take it back, re-imburse me and they could resell it themselves. I was very disappointed today. I drove 100 km to pick up a Omega watch I saw on the web site. I previously spoke with an employee that said I would have a 14 days money back return of not satisfied and they would warranty the watch for a year. The agreement changed once they had me in the store. She changed the original agreement to 14 days money back with only 6 months warranty or 14 days in store exchange with one year warranty. That was not the agreement we agreed on. So I walked. I called to complain to the manager. He said he would not honour the original one year warranty agreement but would give me the six months and nock off 100 dollars That hardly would pay for the gas I wasted let alone have to go back to pick the watch up. Plus the waste of time spent. Terrible way to run a company I would no recommend shopping there they do not honour their agreements. read more

I have been buying myself jewelry all my life, I also buy and sell jewelry. I visit every pawn-shop, thrift shop and pawn-broker from Oshawa to Toronto every two or three days looking for inventory, good deals, hopefully a mislabeled van-gogh painting and gifts for the family. If you don't mind paying a lot more, paying top prices, receiving no customer loyalty and unprofessionalism. James Mctamneys & co Inc is the place to go! Negatives: - Most expensive pawn store in the GTA and Durham - They're never willing to negotiate on price - They're never willing to eat the taxes or partial taxes for repeat customers giving them good business (every other store in the GTA or Durham will ) - I wanted a Gold Lions Ring, the male manager took the item, he looked at the price on the tag, he calculated a price in front of me with a calculator and we both agreed upon a price face-to-face. I pulled out the cash for the agreed upon amount. The male manager, ended up looking into the sky blankly and then said that he actually made a mistake and increased the price. * This is Bad Business * Once an agreed upon price is made, especially face-to-face - a good Business needs to honor it, but James Mctamneys won't * This is bad practice, it is unethical and goes against Business ethics - I recently brought back 3 items, these items are 'separate' from the $3500.00 that I've spent in the past at the store. This was my FIRST return at the store, I was told by an Asian lady who was training another female employee who was by her side, that I would not be allowed to return things constantly. * First of all, to tell a customer something like this on their first return is just absolutely wrong and unprofessional. I could understand if it was my 3rd or 4th return in a short time frame, but it was my first. * Since when do stores pick and choose when they can change their own legally binding terms and conditions printed on their receipt in Ink for any individual customer they so choose. (Their policy is 2 weeks exchange, no refunds ) it has no limits on the receipt. - I came back for a second return, and was met with "sorry you aren't allowed to return items anymore, I was beside my boss when you were told" (The young lady is referring to the Asain lady as mentioned above) * I told the girl in a professional and polite way that she should recollect the conversation correctly because that's not factual. The Asain lady said that I could not do returns constantly or continuously. * No customer, especially one who has spent $3500.00 should be met by this kind of hostility brought on by misinformation, clearly they were not listening while in training. * The young lady said she'd have to go ask her manager if the second return could be approved. * I told her to please word herself correctly when speaking with her manager because one single word in the way she structures her sentences can alter the understanding of that manager, thus creating an issue for all of us. * She came back with authorization to go ahead with the second return * I was told although the second return is approved, I can no longer return anything and that was my last time indefinitely. * This alone was so unfathomable, I was taken aback. again another unethical and uncalled decision that goes against all Business ethics in every way possible. I had an appointment with their Gold-smith the same day as the second return to get a Gold Ring Custom made. Instead I cancelled it, I bought a $751.00 Gold item for myself with my in-store credit and some cash. I told them politely that I would never do business with them again, I stated that I would be making an online review about them and walked out of the store on September 11th 2020 for the last time. I was told "please do not leave a bad review" but this kind of Bad Business needs to be seen by all potential Customers new and old. Aside from the Negative, I believe everyone should try to leave some Positive feed-back if at all possible. Positives: - Responds to Facebook messages quickly - Floor agents such as the late Sophia and current agents Deeana and I believe one of the new lads, his name might be Michael were pleasant to deal with. Went to look at a ring that was 1525$. I brought 1400$ cash in my hand and asked for a deal. They looked at me like I was an alien as if bargaining isn't what pawn shops do. They weren't interested in working anything out expect no tax which is expected if I pay cash anyway. Snobby unhelpful staff refused to work out anything. I am shocked at the greed and general disinterest they show their customers. I will definitely not be going back to this place ever. read more

I checked out the reviews before I visited this pawn shop. I was sadly disappointed, I thought I was walking into something I wouldn't regret. I looked at a Rolex and the woman just seemed as though she didn't want to sell it to use because it had just arrived two weeks ago and therefore could not budge on the price. We looked at a chain and the sales staff seemed disconnected and told us that there would be no savings, even on tax. It's been. Family business, I get it, but is being rude and I knowledgeable part of the family business??? Never going there again. My Fiance and I have been looking for rings together for a couple months now, going into the typical jewellery stores and finding everything overpriced and not unique at all. We decided to go the more vintage route and went to McTamney's. They have an amazing selection of rings, some look brand new or gently worn and some vintage turn of the century rings which have been very well preserved. One of the managers named Mina helped us. She was very knowledgeable and helpful, but not pushy which is refreshing because if you walk into a People's or Birk's they hover over you like watch dogs and make the experience very uncomfortable. She didn't press us to go for anything more than what we could afford, and we both ended up with beautiful vintage rings which reflect our style and personalities. Bought from here a couple times. Bought an item I thought was silver but when I got it tested it was fake. Also there prices are too high for a pawn shop, they will sell you used pieces for more money then it's retail value. Really snobby staff. I would avoid at all cost. read more
