While my stay started off well, it quickly deteriorated. I was under the impression that we were booking a hotel-like room; however, the owner had the freedom to enter my room while I was in bed and spoke to me in a condescending manner. This behavior is entirely unacceptable. If there are specific rules, they should be clearly posted or communicated to guests in advance. If children are not welcome, this should be explicitly stated in the advertisement. Under no circumstances should anyone walk into a guest's room uninvited, especially while they are in their pajamas, and criticize their parenting. My son was not being loud while warming up his food, even though it was late. Considering it's summer break and the sun stays up longer, it's unreasonable to expect children to follow a strict bedtime. I wish you all the best with your business, but I cannot recommend this place to anyone, life is too short to deal with this kind of non-sense. If you're bringing a dog...make sure you pay for that ahead of time. Simply emailing them you're bringing a dog and them responding isn't enough. I had to drop my 8lb puppy off at a stranger's house and pay them a lot more money because a room that allowed dogs wasn't set aside as a result of me not paying that fee ahead of time. I was told the other guests are "afraid" of dogs as an excuse. And that'd been fine and dandy had not the minute I got up and stepped outside while trying to make a phone call, I wasn't run over by two 150 lb malamutes. Good thing I'm not afraid of dogs. I just don't like being lied to though. They did plug in their front porch freezer for me to put fish I was bringing back from the Kenai. Bed was comfortable. The people running it seemed nice enough. Again, a little pissy J was told my pup would scare people when they had ginormous dogs running the property. read more

My friend and I were in Talkeetna just for the night and found the Meandering Moose online. We booked a room in the lodge and it was wonderful! The owners were very kind and responsive to questions and friendly every time we ran into them. Our room was clean with a very comfortable bed. The lodge has a shared bathroom, living room and kitchen, all of which were very clean and well stocked. It is set back a little from town, but it makes for a beautiful, woodsy location. I would absolutely recommend Meandering Moose to anyone staying in Talkeetna! read more

I only booked this property due the fact that I wanted to be around half way from Anchorage and Denali National Park. Driving 5+ hours was not in the travel plans, so I chose Meandering Moose Lodging for my accommodations needs. I found Meandering Moose via Hotels.com, one of my go to sites to book hotels online. While I don't usually book b&b properties, this one met my price point and I decided to book it for my recent Alaska trip. When I read the room description on the website, my chosen room was essentially a one person occupant stand alone cabin without running water. I came to learn later upon check in that there is another facility that I could take a shower and do other things there. The price per night hovered around $100/night, if not a bit cheaper, which was considered doable for me. Cheaper the better of course, but it beat sleeping in my rental car for sure. With that said, I arrived here in a secluded area that's called Talkeetna. It's basically 2 hours drive from Wasilla and 2 1/2 from Anchorage. More or less. I figured it was pretty much half way to Denali National Park and about 3 hours to Fairbanks from this bed and breakfast property. The town of Talkeetna is very small, but has a cute downtown area that's not much of a busy place. While they do have a place for alcohol, not much was stirring when I came through the area. Upon arrival, I arrived here at the property around 5:30pm. It was okay using Google maps to find the property but the business owner also provided directions via email, just in case my GPS could not find my location. I met the owner when I checked in and she instructed me to leave the door open upon checking out, should I leave before 7am. It was an interesting stay here, even for a night. Sleeping in a log cabin with the modern amenities still is weird. Upon arrival, the scene looked like a spawn from a horror movie waiting to happen. Isolated cabin and a chalkboard with my name on it. Thought it was weird, but that's how apparently the owner of the bed and breakfast greets every guest and how they assign the cabins. The office is basically is located at the main house. I wasn't sure if I could have parked right in front of the cabin or not for the night, but being that the main house was close enough, I ended up leaving the rental car there at the main house. The overall experience here at the Meandering Moose Cabin lodging was quiet interesting, especially due to the log cabin motif. I knew that going in after booking, but still have me the creeps during my stay. I ended up sleeping at 11pm and woke up about 6am and was on the road shortly towards Denali National Park. The owner did mention that a complimentary breakfast was served starting at 7am, but I didn't do that at all. There wasn't WiFi to speak of and the area wasn't too good for cell reception anyway. Talkeetna is a quaint little town and they sure know how to keep it alive, economically speaking. Probably through tourists who come and go to Denali - I'm guessing. For the most part though, the night spent here was good and uneventful. I'm glad that no masked man with an axe cane knocking on my door - after all the horror movies I've seen throughout my life so far. Maybe it's just me. The Meandering Moose lodging & vacation rentals is located at 14677 E Cabin Spike Road in Talkeetna, Alaska. I booked this property through hotels.com, so they accept major credit cards online. For the most part though, cell service is probably a little shoddy, although I'm pretty sure that there is no WiFi here that's useable. I didn't check though, as I was too exhausted to surf the web after a day of driving up from Anchorage to this place. The parking situation was decent, since there are limited cabins here and on any given day, it won't get filled up to where parking is an issue. The downtown area of Talkeetna is nearby, where you can get your meals and essentials while you are in town. For me, it was a quick stay here. The cabin itself was cozy enough and I got a quick night sleep. That's the basic tone of this experience. Just get in and out with a good nights rest. I admit that the bed was pretty comfortable, after 15 minutes of getting settled in. If you are in the area and need a place to crash, consider The Meandering Moose bed and breakfast / vacation rentals for your next stay in Alaska. You would be close to Denali National Park - about a 2 hour drive north. While it was a good stay, it was an average stay at best. Prices are good, so I'll give it a thumbs up! 4.0 stars for the overall experience. While the cabin gave me weird vibes, all was well and got a good nights sleep. Oh, how I would love to try you out in the summer. However, your always full! I know why, your an amazing place away from all the bustle. We stayed here in the winter in the Snoozin Moose and it was fantastic! Just keep the door closed to keep that warmth in there, and prepare for a colder shower :) I love the welcome signs at your cabin, it makes it easy to find. I also love that you don't really have to check in, the cabin is just ready for you whenever you get in. We managed to stay here on one of the coldest nights of the winter, our car would not start and the owners were more than willing to let us stay in the cabin until it started. They brought a engine blanket and blower to help us out :) The grounds are kept up really well and it is like its own little cabin city (not that there are a ton, but there is nothing else around). Kathy and Mike are the best. Funny as all h$ll and very accomodating to guests. We had the Cozy Cabin for the 3 of us and it was just right. It's a little on the small side (hence "cozy") with a queen bed and a pull out the futon sofa. The sofa was big enough that the son just slept on it without pulling it out. Also had a microwave and a small fridge. The Moose compound is a couple outside of town which means peace and quiet. The internet is a little slow but considering where we were we were happy to have any internet at all. Bathroomsand laundry facilities were in another building a short walk away. Breakfast of coffee, breads, cereal and eggs just enough to get us started and on the road. Highly recommend staying here if in the Talkeetna area. read more

Might not be a great place for little tikes as the steps leading up to the loft with most of the bedding is very steep. The owner and other employee we encountered were friendly. Cozy Moose was maybe a little too cozy for three. The queen was against the wall without its own side table or any good route out except over the bed companion. The sofa was a bit saggy and both arms seemed ready to fall off; time for a new one. We unplugged the mini fridge to cut down on the noise in the room overnight. Flowers on the porch and a custom welcome sign were nice touches. The shared bath/laundry was well equipped and quite clean, with plenty of hot water. It wasn't too long a walk. Wifi was iffy, but okay for quick checks of email and social. It's a cute little "neighborhood" of cabins away from town, but also not far from a runway and next door to a team of sled dogs. "Quiet" describes the site only some of the time. Good breads at breakfast and enough other food choices to get the day started right. read more

I recently stayed at the Meandering Moose Lodging in the Mangy Moose cabin for two nights with my partner and a visiting friend. We found the cabin to be cozy, warm, and full of everything we could have needed or wanted-- including a fully stocked kitchen, towels, shampoo, and the entire first two season of Northern Exposure which we watched while waiting for the Northern lights. The owner was polite, responded quickly to all of our needs, and was immediately available when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the cabin. She even gave us advice on the best place to go to watch the auroras that night. There is A LOT of space to sleep in the Mangy Moose. The loft upstairs is split into two rooms-- though only separated by cloth curtains. Each room has a full bed and two twins in it. If you are looking for privacy from your family or children I would not recommend this cabin. That being said I WOULD highly recommend this cabin or any other cabins at the Meandering Moose. There were definitely a lot of dogs barking both in the morning and at night. This didn't bother us because as it was winter we had all the windows closed though I perhaps could see this being annoying during the summer. Judging by the number of dogs barking at once I assume they are someone's sled dogs nearby which if you think about it is a novel and wonderful culture Alaska has to offer. No other cabins in the Talkeetna area will allow you to be as secluded as the Meandering Moose. It's not walkable to downtown like some other options but we wanted to be more secluded and in the woods. Come in the fall and take advantage of the winter rates! read more

We opted to stay in the B&B (main building) to have plumbing near our room. A week in advance the manager e-mailed me to confirm we were staying and once we replied our confirmation, she took our payment. This was a whole week in advance, and not expected. So I'm glad that the money was there. We were on our way to Denali, but wanted to stay somewhere between Anchorage and Denali and wanted to go the cheap route and save a few bucks instead of staying at an Inn near the park. When we diverted off to Talkeetna, the charming, cute, whimsical impressions we had after having had watched YouTube videos were quickly reduced down to shades of Appalachia. The backroads were so full of potholes we had to swerve to miss them and we lost count of all the junk cars discarded out in the lawns. The narrow path leading back to the Lodge continued the same theme as it was junky and gave a very bad first impression. The lady that greeted us was warm and welcoming and she explained a few house rules, but that was all she did. Right away, I used the facilities and noted the soaking wet hand towel. I was surprised that the guests who were in the other room had not thought to get a new one out. I was utterly disgusted and immediately pulled out a new one for my husband and I. The bathroom did not appear clean and sanitary. I'm not sure when the last time was the bathtub had been cleaned with disinfectant, but I was wary. Our room had all the necessities and we were thankful for the loud fan which drowned out any movement and sounds in the common areas. You could hear footsteps above where the owners stayed in the top level. The room was extremely small and made me feel claustrophobic so I was glad for the air movement. Our blinds were broken and despite trying to fumble with the blinds to get them to fully keep out all light, we were too tired to fix them. We could have bothered the staff to fix, but this isn't something that could have been fixed immediately and we just wanted to rest so we let it go. The sheet had a stain on it, but it might have just been from an oily substance that they didn't use a stain remover to get off. And my pillow smelled like "old man". I don't know if the sheets had been changed or not, but maybe the detergent can be changed to something a little fresher- such as Tide. I don't want to blame this outfit for the cold that I contracted a day later, but it makes a person think. The place would be a lot more attractive if it were cleaner and things were more self-explanatory. For instance, if I did want to take a bath or shower, where were the towels? We did notice a list of rules hanging up in the room, but only the morning after. It just wasn't for us. read more

Upstairs suite in main lodge was huge, recently remodeled. Bathroom also huge with spa tub and separate shower. Kathy was full of helpful tips about Talkeetna. Most of separate cabins have own kitchenettes. Kathy asks the cabin folks to not come over for continental breakfast until after 8:00 or 8:30 in case main lodge folks are starting a lazy day. Lodge is conveniently right next door to Sundog Kennels, where Iditarod racer Jerry Sousa givers daily dog mushing and training tours; being sprint/summer our "sled" was a 4-wheeled ATV. My wife and I loved our two days in Talkeetna! Internet is sporadic, but then it is on the edge of the Alaska wilderness. read more

We arrived late in the night, and the host was very considerate to left the door open and lights on for us. The cabin is not easy to find in the dark night of August for it is deep in the woods. Really nice cabin just a couple of miles out of town. We had the Mangy Moose cabin. A 2 bedroom loft unit and it was very nice. Kitchen was basic as well as the bathroom but it was comfortable. Stars to the 2nd story were VERY steep, and the bedrooms did not have doors, just a curtain. Management is very accommodating, breakfast was good. We spent most of our time in Talkeetna but the cabin was nice to come "home" to. Wi-Fi was at the office. We would stay here again. read more

Best vacation ever, late July 2015. We stayed in the upstairs suite. I didn't take too long to feel as if you were a part of their family staying with relatives for a few days. Kathy and her daughter Christi were awesome. They even took time out of their day one day to drive out of town to meet us and show us one of the local "secret salmon fishing spots". I've never teared up when it was time to leave their lodge but the day we left was tough with hugs all around. read more

Beautiful cabins in the woods, amazing scenery. We stayed in a "dry" one - no running water. However, there was a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and a small water tank for drinking water. I have stayed here twice now and absolutely love it! The cabins are awesome and equipped with everything you need yet you still feel like you are out away from society. The owners go above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be. Staying during the winter is the best. We were the only guest staying there so we had it all to ourselves!
