ESPECIALLY if you watched the show Northern Exposure, which, by the way, was NOT filmed in Alaska. Downtown Talkeetna, depending the time of year, is either bustling with tourists or very quiet. If you are a visitor to Alaska, I recommend it as a place you must make time for. It's very, very small. Depending on your interest, there are lots of opportunities for excursions. Some require a lot of planning and reservations. Others can be made at last minute. The Makay boat tours are very popular and totally unique. The flight tours that go over Denali are said to be incredible if you aren't a coward like me. I've done the Zip lines and they are worth every penny. There's fiishing, camping and beautiful cabin rentals and B&Bs. I'm not going to make specific recommendations because things are ever changing and seasonal and you should do you research before going to Talkeetna. Be aware its a very small town hours away from hospitals and police. If you have medical needs make sure you are prepared. They do have the small Sunrise Clinic, but services are limited and its not downtown. They have limited restaurants- some are excellent and a couple are in my opinion, really terrible. Do your research. The people are very nice as long as you are polite- this is small town Alaska. A few places i will unabashedly recommend because they have never failed me: Conscious Coffee. I will drive hours from Anchorage just for a perfect latte and their awesome vibe. Silverbear Sundries makes the best mint chapstick in the universe. Denali Brewpub has 2 locations and makes some of the best beers I've had anywhere. I love their Stout. They have a 2 equally nice locations in Talkeetna depending on your preferences. If I could live anywhere it would probably be Talkeetna or Hope. But living so far from year round jobs is very difficult and not realistic for many people. The people who live here are very committed to the living the Alaskan dream.

We had a one night stay while on our Celebrity cruise tour. On a clear day you can see Denali from…read morethe outdoor viewing platform at the main lodge which didn't occur while we were there. However we weren't too disappointed as we saw Denali the day before on a beautiful clear day while on the road. We stayed in a building below the main lodge. A very short walk. Had to kill two mosquitoes in our room. Talkeetna is actually closer to Denali than Denali Park Village. The property is very nice but our stay very brief. As with Denali Park Village, there's a Northern Lights notification system you can participate in with the front desk. Alas no such luck for us that night. There's a coffee bar and a sit down restaurant. A massive fireplace anchors the hotel lobby. We ate at the Bistro at the lodge twice - dinner and breakfast as our time was brief. There's a hotel courtesy shuttle into town. The last one at 9:45pm. On display is an Alaskan brown bear shot by a 10 year old.

The lodge itself is beautiful with a big open entry with a stone fireplace. There is plenty of seating so you can enjoy the view, warm up by the fire or play games at a table with friends and family. There are water refilling stations, ice machines, laundry machines. We enjoyed the trails around the lodge, which were well maintained. We took advantage of the free shuttle to town that arrives every 30 minutes. The rooms are fine. The couch was pretty torn up and there is no air conditioning- which we didn't need in September. The train does come through around 4:40 AM and wakes you up. Service is friendly enough but nothing special. Food options are decent. We really liked the halibut Reuben at the restaurant.

Even worse, we stored the salmon we caught in their freezer and were told the office would be open at 7 AM so we could pick it up before leaving. The office was closed, and we never got our fish. McKinley Wilderness Lodge...so took an hour or so to check out the place. Well, unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with the place...except for its lake, with majestic views of Denali. Had to be the star attraction/landmark there. The tiny town (if you can call it that?) is VERY quaint. It felt as if I stepped back in time...as in WAY back. Too quaint, if you ask me. Of course, some folks love even this level of quaintness, so there you go! It was also a bit tacky in that it had one too many gift shops...some with Trump merchandise (This was clearly still TrumpLand, USA). Also, the place was so dusty that my black sneakers turned completely gray by the time we left the place.
