Firstly, as a retail outlet (I can't believe I'm saying that) St James', and particularly Gledhow wing, is well over priced. On entering I am reminded of an airport departure lounge and, in common with these, the retailers are aware that they are serving a captive audience and quite obviously have no problem in profiting from peoples misfortune. I'm sure that these shiny new retail units are making lots of money for someone and it's good to know that, somewhere, there are happy people. More worrying was the comment of the assistant in one of these retail units when I commented on the excessive profits. I won't repeat his words but his comment on who profits was clearly racist. As a hospital (yes they still have room for that sort of stuff) I was left feeling saddened and extremely worried. I ha ve been visiting St James' daily for the past three weeks and these are my overall impressions: I have the up-most respect for most of the individuals who provide nursing and support care but, as a qualified nurse, I worried that many staff seem under trained for the role they find themselves in and they are obviously very stressed. It is unacceptable to 'forget' a patients medication, neglect hygiene needs or protect patients from harm. Staffing levels are low and patient care suffers because of this. Recently I spent a night on the assessment ward where there were several patients in the corridor due to lack of space some of whom had been waiting 12 hours for a bed (and some of these patients were planned admissions, asked to come in because a bed was ready for them). Don't even get me started on the cost of parking........

After sorting an appointment on the phone with relative ease, I travelled across to Lexicon House, and sat to wait my turn amongst the other sufferers in the building. As ever, the process was pretty simple, although the waiting times were longer than I'd experienced before. This can't be helped, though. My appointment was barely a minute long -the doctor took one look at my tonsils and prescribed me a course of penicillin. My only issue was that given how swollen they were, in hindsight, I'm inclined to think that I ought to have had a stronger, longer course since within a week and a half of getting better I came back down with it again. Dang. The only other thing was that the appointment was so quick, that the pharmacist had to go through how to take the medicine, since he was too brief for me to get the instructions the first time around. I understand there were so many people waiting and wanting to get in and out, but just a few minutes more would have been better. In any case, they always do the job, so I'm always grateful for their services! The reception staff were also lovely, which is always nice.

As ever, the reception staff on the phone were lovely, and I was swiftly seen with little waiting time. On this occasion I had a lovely lady doctor, whose bedside manner was the best I've experienced in this practice -she was understanding, patient, caring and explained everything. The appointment took little time, and she quickly prescribed me a stronger, longer course of antibiotics, and gave me some salient advice on whether or not to perform a gig given the condition of my throat. It's never fun having to go to the doctors, but I know I'm in good hands when I come here, as I'm almost always well looked after. Fantastic!

Registering is simple and takes no time at all. You just need a few personal details which Rowena has set out. I went into the Laurel bank Surgery section of the practice, which was friendly enough when you walk in. A very simple, little doctores surgery, there nothing to dress it up as something it's not, which you do find with some surgeries. If I'm honest, I think Laurel Bank was a little too imposing in terms of decor, especially keeping in mind how nerve-racking a trip can be. My doctor was absolutely fine, obviously my throat infection was not exactly the hardest thing for her to diagnose! One thing I would say is that the waiting room upstairs is very small and cramped, which is not great in terms of being cooked up waiting to be seen. It was also pretty warm when I was there, meaning I was worrying about floating germs.

The staff are really approachable and discuss all the lense options available and which lenses will work best for you. They also sell glasses and there are some nice designer ones. You can get a discount if you buy new prescription glasses alongside ordering contact lenses. I've had no problems whatsoever and will continue to use there services.

This is not my first experience with awful doctors who don't care about mental health here. In my experience when you go to the walk-in clinic the receptionist rudely tells you what you can and cannot go to the clinic for. When you do see a doctor at this practice they are often rushed and do not want to spend too much time with you, and one of the doctors (female) has googled my symptoms every time I have seen her.

In addition to that they have added a car park now to which makes it easier for any one coming with a car here. The average wait i have to sustain for an appointment booked will be round about 6 days here approx. Surgery is busy and is also closed on a Thursday they do close late though each weekday they are open at 7. The services with the GPs though have been nothing but fantastic.

On the few occasions I had to visit here the nurses and doctors were kind and reassuring, without that patronising air you sometimes get with medical practitioners - that why-are-you-wasting-our-time type look. The building is modern, clean and located conveniently close to the University. The only bad point about this surgery is that they only cater for students - no longer being one, I am struggling to find a surgery that matches up.
