I am not much of a builder or a painter despite the occasional builders bum (it happens to the best…read moreof us), but I do enjoy it when the rare time arises. After University I moved back home 2 months before deciding to flee the nest once again, during this time I decided that I wanted my room to look 'Moroccan' themed and so decided to paint my room terracotta and yellow. After spending ages on it and stinking the house out with the pong of paint, it was still a bit scruffy, but I was very pleased with myself. It was very satisfying. If you have an urge to paint or re-build something, and think you have the capability to do an alright job, Johnstone's will probably have the bits and bobs you need. They stock a huge range of building and painting supplies, and are much cheaper than your usual chain supplier so you can get on with the job you've been thinking about for ages.

I had to go their with a friend before I realised what this massive building on the corner of the road was. Thankfully now I know. They have a huge range of paint for every occasion - gloss, mat, outside paint, indoor paint - a they can mix up a colour for you. I have a minor phobia of really large stores like B and Q selling this kind of thing as there is always too much to choose from and the tins of paint seem to be piled up to the ceiling. Johnstone's is far easier to manage as it is not so big, its quiet during the week yet they have everything you could possibly need. There is sand paper, brushes, even overalls if you don't want to get your regular clothes covered in paint that will never come out. A wise purchase in my experience.

Don't get me wrong, they're not complete eye-sores, but I feel if I could just get a little something cosy to cover up the ugly pattern life might be that little bit sweeter. It's not the be-all and end-all and yet it's something that keeps niggling away at me enough to force me to pursue this magic rug of joy. Anyway, I digress. The lady greeted me kindly as soon as I entered the shop and offered me help, to which I explained my problem. I said I could be convinced to go for a sheepskin rug, albeit they're a little expensive, but perhaps a patterned rug might be nicer. She said that they often get left over pieces from their carpet fittings, and so it would be no problem to convert a cut-off piece into a rug, should that be suitable. I had a quick nosy round, as we didn't have long, and again was impressed with the variety of carpets available. I'm certainly considering coming back to have a proper look around and see if they have anything suitable, but the sheepskin rug option is looking ever more tempting in this cold weather!

I had the idea of a patterned carpet with a traditional border and a plain carpet around. Despite the issue with the distance and the need to have a local carpet fitter to deal with a carpet that anotherone had prepared. I was curious about how this would turn out. Richard and Colin were most helpful. Samples were sent, ample information provided, drawings and photos exchanged. As Brinton's have drastically altered their range Colin had to combine elements of his ample remnant stock (Thank you!) with others from another supplier (Ulster). It is the knowledge of an experienced team that counts here. The carpet was completely customised in the Stonegate Carpet workshop, very well wrapped and finally sent within schedule my house. I am so happy to have found this family run business with its most experienced team. Give it a try and you will definitely not regret it.

En route to town, I dropped in my solid favourite heels to be fixed up, and was greeted by the ever friendly and welcoming guys that man the shop. I'm sure one of them must be Steve, and one day I might venture to ask which one, but on this occasion I wasn't so brave as to make introductions. It costs just over a fiver to get re-heeling done, and I've never been in without being able to collect the shoes about 30 minutes later. Basically, it gives you enough time to pop off for a coffee, take in the world, and pop back again before going about your day. Of course, if you need keys cut, and the various other cobbler odd jobs, they're ready to provide good service for that too. They're always smiling, they're cheap and cheerful, they're fantastic and I've them to thank for not having to buy new shoes. It's always a pleasure. Cash only, but as Hannah says, there's a cash machine right next door!

The keycutting services are as fast as they are cheap (very) and on the two occasions I've needed a key cut here, I've had no problems with the finished product working in my doors. Can't say I've ever needed to have a shoe cobbled though. I'm a firm believer in the if-a-shoe's-broke-bin-it school of thought, so I can't comment on Steve's shoe skills, but I'd wager they're as professional as his key-cutting skills are.
