There were empty tables downstairs and the restroom was also downstairs. The menu was only in Italian but we were able to figure out what we wanted. The ladies ordered tenderloin, one medium and one medium rare. When it came out, the meat was a little undercooked and not as warm in the plate. We asked our waiter if they could be taken back to cook a little longer and he was able to get that done. The meat for the 4 of us was delicious, warm, and well seasoned. A basket of crusty bread was taken to our table. I asked twice for butter and had to wait awhile for it but it was worth the wait. The restaurant was decorated with a modern flair. We are not wine drinkers but there is a good assortment of wines there. In America, we are used to good service from waitstaff at higher end restaurants like this. In Italy, it's different. Tipping is usually not done unless the diner feels well taken care of. Although we had to wait for a few items, the meat was worth the visit. Surprised that my review is the only one in the last few years. Not many know of this place unless they use Yelp.

The restaurant is located in Pogerola, a 15-min SITA bus ride from the center of Amalfi and is TOTALLY worth the trip. To get to it, take the SITA bus from the port of Amalfi towards Pogerola and get off at Pogerola. Walk down the road and you will see a sign pointing down a flight of stairs advertising the restaurant- you will likely not be able to see the restaurant from the road- and descend those stairs to get to this amazing restaurant. The ambiance is rustic and romantic- it has a large fireplace in the dining room with lots of wood accents and has many lit candles. It is located essentially on the side of the mountain and one wall is completely glass looking onto a patio with even more seating and has a spectacular view of Amalfi and the sea- at night you can see the lights from the fishing boats and from the islands off the coast- and is beautiful. I'm sure in the summer the patio area would be completely amazing as well. The food was excellent, the pasta (as most pastas in Italy) is hand-made and fresh with local ingredients. I had the oricchiete with sun-dried tomatoes and olive oil and my boyfriend had the bolognese and both were amazing. For the main course we shared a plate of their grilled meats- their house specialty- and they were literally the best meats we had ever had! They are prepared on a grill that is open and visible to the customer by an older man who you can see puts great pride and labor into the process. The meats come out impeccably flavored, perfectly cooked, and are literally life-changing. The service was also great, the waitress was attentive but not overbearing and the owner came by the table to greet us and was extremely welcoming and nice. When we got back to the states we told everyone we knew about La Taverna dei Briganti and we would tell anyone else that is was simply the best we've experienced and would recommend this place to anyone!

Turns out it's a steakhouse and as you'll see in the photos I'm about to post this was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the service is excellent, everything spotless, and they're incredibly generous with every dish they bring out. Sometimes the best places are the ones you walk past without knowing what's inside... until you stop, take a chance, and get blown away. Highly recommend.
