I had gone here for a balayage a couple of times, and Liz always did the best colour that I've ever had. So flattering, so natural looking, and done in very quickly as well! They have extra staff around, so sometimes another person will come and help apply the colour, which really makes everything go a lot faster. I made a mistake and "cheated" on Liz recently by going to a hair salon close to my home, for convenience. Boy.... not a good decision!!! I contacted Medulla to fix the botched job and Liz fixed me up. And didn't judge me at all for straying!!! Will never go to another place for colour. Medulla is just top notch. They are expensive, but completely worth it. Edited to add: the noise volume in the salon is very low; they play music that is not abrasive, and they play it at a low volume. I don't enjoy salons with super loud, abrasive music that you have to shout over (I'm old lol). I'm generally tired, so I really appreciate the chill vibes here as well. read more

I started going to Holly over a year ago to get my dark hair lightened with some balyage and also to help disguise some greys. Holly recommended that instead of colouring my roots she would do the balyage in such a way that the greys would be almost camouflaged and I would not need to touch up roots as often. This has totally worked so far. I go back for a gloss (toner) every 6-8 weeks just to refresh the tone of the hair but other than that my greys are there but less visible. The balyage is very natural looking which is what I was going for. And my hair does not feel like it has been over processed afterwards. I highly recommend this place, they definitely know what they are doing when it comes to colouring dark hair. The only complaint I have is that when you have people sitting there for over 3 hours for a balyage, maybe offer them a drink more often than once, or even a small snack. It would help a lot. Also maybe some charging stations for peoples phones. Most people bring their own, but once I forgot it. Just the small things to make the time go by would be a nice touch. read more

Very Expensive! Came for highlights and cut and paid almost $375 with tips and tax. Two large pieces of hair that were balayaged got fried because of the unnecessary high volume bleach my colourist used. Also got a chemical hair cut on pieces of my bangs that stuck straight up for a month after my first visit. There's also no wi fi signal or natural lighting in the colour area since it's an old building. Colour is done under overhead pot lighting so the second time i had my colour done, once i got into natural light the colour was off. Inconsistent service and very passive aggressive customer arrived when I voiced my concerns. read more

I came to this salon 2 weeks ago for a consultation appointment with Luis. My hair at that time was ruined by some salon who promised to give me a nice balayage that came with a good amount of money. It was half orange, half black and was in dire need of repair. After 15 minutes of discussion on what the possible options are for my hair - either bringing it back to its natural colour (would take 1 hour) or achieve my dreams of going blonde (6-8 hours). I decided to go for the latter. I booked my myself an appointment with Liz for the colour and Matthew for the hair cut. I came to the salon with less expectations - I just want my hair to look decent enough but it ended up looking great! Liz was very tedious on how she coloured my hair. At one point, she asked Luis about my hair and I was happy that he was actually there because of my previous experience from another salon. We didn't go with lightening my hair even further because it would damage my hair; I wish we could but I agree that my hair won't be able to take it since my hair is naturally black. I was happy on how it turned out. The low lights looked good and my final shampoo is so relaxing. Thank you, Liz! Matthew trimmed in the middle of colouring and after colouring. He trimmed 2 inches from the longest point and about 1 inch on the shorter sides of my hair. It was good, my hair looked healthy and he gave it a good blow dry. He is really good looking, btw. Experience: Colorist just cant listen, does what she wants not what you ask for! Came in to to get my ombre lighter (already had a black to dirty blonde ombre), showed them a picture of exactly what I wanted which was a more golden blond that was more in your face for the bottom half of my hair. First I get this sandy blonde that looks almost like my hair was white in certain lighting (bleached), I then tell her this isnt what I wanted, but instead get this negative attitude that I should appreciate her work, and that people kill for this colour (which I didnt even ask for). She then goes on saying for my skin tone if she made it more yellow it wouldn't look good on me and stuff, and that I should just keep the colour. If that was your plan this whole time, thanks for telling me after I got it dyed. At this point I preferred the colour of my hair that I walked in with before she even touched it! Since this is the 3rd time I'm trying to get my natural black hair to golden blonde in the past 6 months, I refused to take her advice and asked for it to be made more "yellow" (as she puts it). I got some tonner in my hair, now its more yellowy blond better than whitey-blonde, but no where near the several pictures I had already shown her of a bright vibrant golden blonde. Worst of all is that the colour overall just looks....DULL. The only thing good was the blow-out but any salon can do that.... read more

This place services to celebrities (charges them a deep discount) and uses the celebrity marketing to lure in clients. Unfortunately, most clients leave unsatisfied or when the client is unhappy the staff ignore or choose not to rectify the situation. They meet clients for an initial consultation- where the process and outcome are discussed. They do not execute the plan as discussed and if you aren't happy they don't fix the problem. Another salon that uses influencer/celebrity hype to pull in victims. Or they service high paying clients. read more

This place was my go to for a long time. I encouraged others that despite a hefty price tag the quality of colour was amazing. Many of their stylists are very talented but they overcharge and under deliver on a lot of aspects. I'm not too confident I'll return again. - Blow drys are never included and they try to book you with Sr. Stylists (at $55.00+) to get your hair dried after spending over $200 on colour. - Receptionist often forgets what services I got and attempts to overcharge. - Prices have gone up nearly 30% in the last year and are never consistently quoted. - Some of the employees are incredibly rude and unpleasant to be around. -Expensive blow drys have lacked in quality and not to mention are very harshly completed (splitting ends and hurting the scalp) -Olaplex is apparently included in their cost for colour but not always used if the stylist feels the hair is healthy enough. read more

After 4 years of not colouring my hair I decided it was time for a change. Of course I did my research to find the best in the city. I could not be happier with the new look Luis gave me. He is truly an artist! Not just that, he is also super nice and funny. The staff is also very friendly. My appointment lasted over 7 hours, and there was always a staff member asking me if I needed anything. I was pretty tired by the end (from all the seating and watching people go at my hair haha) but it was definitely worth it. I look forward to returning for more hair colour magic! read more

Terrible customer service and not worth the price. Paid $400 to have my roots blended with Holly. Felt great with her at first - she suggested I do highlights, lowlights and gloss. Not the price or extensive process (6 hrs) that was the problem, but that I came out of the appt with literally half of my roots still not blended, still very harsh. I let it be for a couple weeks to see if maybe it would help and it didn't. I called back to have it fixed and she refused to do so without recharging me for a gloss because "it had been one month" (it had actually only been 3 weeks since I'd been in). She didn't even come to the phone, so explaining what the problem was via receptionist was futile. I didn't need a gloss, I needed more highlights on one side of my head. She didn't complete the job. Best part? I politely complained to them and they never responded. I've had exceptional service elsewhere at the same price point where stylists actually care about their clients' satisfaction. Just incredibly unprofessional...not a sustainable way to conduct business. read more

I can't tell you how disappointing my experience was getting my hair coloured at this salon chain. It all started with when I called to make an appointment originally at the Queen St location and told them I wanted an appointment for a specific date for my birthday event. I was told at 2pm that day that if I came in the same day for 4:15 for a consultation I could get an appointment on the day I wanted. I left work early to get there on time, had a lovely consultation with a woman named Liz and then things went south fast. I went to book my appointment for the date we discussed at reception and the receptionist just smiled at me and said, "Sorry both the appointments available on that day were booked this afternoon so we don't have any appointments left on that day anymore". I stood there for a moment and said, but you just told me two hours ago if I rush down here for 4:15 that I could have an appointment that day; why didn't you hold this appointment for me? She just smiled at me in a condescending manner and said, sorry but those people didn't have to wait for a consultation and could book their appointments right away. I couldn't book yours until you had your consultation. I again asked why did you not hold one of the appointments for me? And she replied, I told you sorry there's nothing else I can do. She didn't try to contact one of the other salons and continued to be rude as I pressed for any solution. I left very upset and decided to called the Yorkville location. I spoke to the receptionist there and informed her what had happened. She was very nice and said to give her a few minutes and she would call me back. A few minutes later the owner of the salon, Luis, called me and again was nice. Apologized for how the receptionist had handled things and worked with me to book an appointment at that location instead on the day I needed the appointment. He said the price would be the same as I was quoted at the Queen St location, $205 +tax. Great! I was happy and showed up on the date early and ready for my colour and blowout excited for a change. I showed Michael, my colourist, the photos of what I wanted (darker hair), and he said great and went to mix colour. While he was brushing it out he commented how healthy my hair was and said it was nice to touch. I mentioned to Michael that I had done my roots myself about 3 weeks ago but there were already some greys poking through and asked to be sure they will be covered as part of the appointment. He assured me the toner he would use with cover them and not to worry. I also mentioned to him I had a blonde Ombre two years ago and it dried my curly hair out badly. That I just recently cut off 7-8 inches of hair to start with a healthy hair again. He proceeded to foil my entire head. I was then brought upstairs and when the stylist took the towel off I was shocked to see my hair had been died very blonde and was a almost full blonde! My heart sunk. The woman saw the look on my face and immediate asked, what? is it not right? To which I replied no this is very wrong. She rushed me downstairs and Michael came over and they said, it's okay we'll put toner on your hair and that will bring the blonde down. They did that, brought me back upstairs, and again my hair wasn't even remotely what I had asked for and now I was devastated about the damage I knew all the bleaching had done to my hair after I spent a year trying to repair it and sacrificed a lot of length to start fresh with undamaged hair just four months ago. Back downstairs I went, while Michael was nice it was obvious he was frustrated with me not being happy at this point. Another colourist came over, asked me what the problem was (she was very nice), and I showed her the photos and she looked at my hair and agreed it wasn't right. She advised Micheal put low lights in my hair with foils to break up all the light coloured hair. Michael did this and I was brought back upstairs. I had my blowout and they asked me if I liked it and I said it was better then when we started even though I wasn't happy because I had been there for five hours at this point and was going to miss my make-up application appointment if I didn't leave. Got home after and was getting ready for my appointment and was astonished to see that after three rounds of colour on my hair my greys were still showing! So this salon damaged my hair, didn't cover my greys and tried to sell me product when I left with a $366 bill; I was charged $225 not $205 but was so mad I said nothing just paid and left (including a 20% tip because I felt obligated to tip them after all the fuss even though I wasn't happy at all). Now recovering the damage to my dry hair will be at my own expense and while the colour I ended up with isn't horrible, it's not what I wanted and as it fades it will lighten because they bleached the crap out of it unnecessarily. I booked a consultation with Elizabeth last week after being disappointed with my previous hairstylist. After examining my hair she recommended a 4-6 hours process of bringing back some of my natural base color as well as adding blonde all over in a way that would look very natural. I am usually very picky, especially when trying a new place, however she made me feel very comfortable and listened to what I wanted, so I took her advice on the "new technique" and booked an "all day" appointment with her. Although I was nervous at first, I love the end results, the blonde looks very natural. Also, she recommended Alex for a haircut and style and she did a great job. I don't usually write reviews (although I love to read them), however I was very impressed with Elizabeth, she did an amazing blonde color on me. Would definitely recommend this place!! read more

Carolyn is a hair guru!! Love all the staff here and Carolyn did an amazing job of taking my very bad ombre and orangey/brassy died blond hair to a golden natural shade. I'm a natural brunet with lots of color damage so taking me to a healthy dirty blond was no easy task but the talented staff Medulla are capable of anything!
