We were told by the MSC crew that they do their shopping here at Mega. We didn't have any plans except to walk around Cozumel and buy some souvenirs. Mega was a very short walk along the boardwalk. It is opposite walk from the touristy strip which I like. The locals shop here. It is like a mall. Food shopping is upstairs. They had a good amount of souvenirs but I didn't the prices were any better. I ended buying treats for the staff on the ship. We were wandering around looking for the outdoor market that we visited several years ago and stumbled upon this place. I guess "stumbled" is not exactly accurate because the store is enormous. It is like a hypermart in the US. It has everything from foods to kids' toys to refrigerators. It has everything that has even been made. Best of all, it is AC! The store was clean and well-kept. This is Mexican Walmart and it's located less than a mile from Walmart, lol. Just a handful of blocks from the touristy Avenida 5, this is the place to get stuff like toiletries you forgot to pack, sunblock, bathing suits, and aqua shoes for local prices, along with beer, snacks, and housewares if that's what you're looking for. Plus it's fun to gravitate to where the locals do every day things. It's also fun to buy items packaged in Spanish. No, I don't speak the language, but how are you going to learn a little of your host country if you don't immerse yourself a little in it? read more

So, lots of tourists stick with the small shops nearby. This is a small walk away, but worth it. It's like a large Walmart. It's got everything from food, alcohol, clothing, toys, etc. My only tip is to either bring a good travel bag with you or buy something other then paper sacks...if you decide to walk back. read more

When I step into a grocery store, especially one that is so enormous from the outside, I expect to see many aisles full of pre-packaged food, drinks, healthcare products and more... But here I stepped into what seems like a mini mall; multiple small retail outlets (like a mobile phone shop and a vitamin store)... no groceries or cashiers to be seen?!?!? So, right in the middle of the large entrance and adjacent to all these retail stores are two Travelators that transport shoppers to the second floor of Mega... wondering what a Travelator is? It's an escalator without the steps and according to ELEVATOR WORLD MAGAZINE it's the wave of the future (of course they have been saying that for 15 years)... AND YES, it's a real magazine. And now it's clear, Second floor is the grocery store and they really have everything you could imagine... Well beyond food and drinks... What grocery store do you know sells scooters and mopeds right in the entrance? They have a coffee shop, they have a pharmacy where the advertise Ritalin and Viagra at a discount, they have a bakery we're fresh rolls and breads are constantly being brought out to help yourself bins, Large produce area with an excellent selection, I think I see a tent and ladder for sale too... they have everything. I came here specifically to prepare a barbecue at our condo... Easily found beer, wine, vegetables and all the other condiments we need. For main dishes we planned on grilling steaks and jumbo shrimp. This is what led to the only negative of our experience... as you approach the Butcher Department, to meet we're in reach-in coolers and ice-bin coolers but there was blood and meat slime on the floor coming from beneath a couple of the refrigeration machines... But not nearly as bad as the smell and slime on the floors near the Seafood Department. We only purchased meats and seafood from the units that didn't have a underside mess... Kinda gross... but overall it could've been worse. read more

The Mega is definitely a great place for groceries in PDC and it is where mostly tourists go to shop when they are staying in their condos or vacation rentals. They have mostly everything one could need to get established for a longer-term stay, and their prices are in line with other grocery stores that cater to a more local crowd. Some things I like about the Mega are: -Ample parking in the covered (free) garage, - Ability to get a taxi/TUCSA/Colectivo easily from the parking lot, - The presence of the safe Santander ATM/banco in the same parking lot, - And inside the store I like the variety of household goods (TP, tupperware, utensils/cooking supplies, soaps/detergents) and the ability to buy individual beers. There is a great variety of staple foods and even a decent selection of vegan cheeses. I prefer the local abarrotes/bodegas for fruits and veggies, but Mega is a great quick stop to load up for a longer stay! read more

I have never been to the Yucatan until now: Shame on me for taking so long to visit this beautiful place that is only 5 hours from LA. I have been to Nuevo Vallarta, and Ensenada, but Playa del Carmen is a very unique place. We dropped by Mega on the way to our condo on the beach in Playa del Carmen. Like the name indicates, its truly a "mega" store. You can buy anything from a toothpick to a 55 inch 4K UHD TV here. The place is massive! We settled for food stuffs like freshly made tortilla chips in the tortilleria, cheeses from all types, snacks from the U.S. and Mexico, pan dulce from the panaderia, and fresh fruits. Mega also contains a coffee shop next to the panaderia to leisurely enjoy your snack. The people in the area seem to excel at lounging around - LOL. In addition, in front there is a pizza shop. Its interesting that the store is upstairs and you take an escalator down w/ your cart when you leave. However, avoid Wal Mart (just like I do in the U.S.), and get all your foodstuffs at Mega like the locals do. You won't regret it. read more

Okay...it's Mexico, and shopping here isn't going to be like it is at home; we knew that going in...nevertheless... Staying at Vidanta in Riviera Maya, it's common for guests and residents to order groceries from Walmart and have them delivered to the resort. Boy do we wish we had gone that route!!! Instead, I had the bright idea to go to Playa for the day and do our grocery shopping ourselves. Instead of going to Walmart, though, we followed our driver's advice and went to the Mega store. There are many reasons that it wasn't a pleasant shopping experience. First, the selection was definitely not what I expected from a store self proclaimed as Mega. They didn't even have canned vegetables other than corn! Indeed, there were empty shelves throughout the store and we were forced to forego many items on our grocery list. Also, only a few items had items labelled in English. Since none in our group were bilingual, we had great difficulty in many cases determining exactly what we were looking at. This was especially true of lunch meat and canned food items. These issues, however, are not the reason for this review. Our issue was with the packaged meat we purchased. Shopping on a Saturday afternoon, we purchased two packages of fresh chicken thighs with which we planned to make two different meals in the coming week. The first of these meals was made on Sunday - just one day after our purchase. As soon as we opened the chicken packaging, we sensed something was amiss. The chicken did not necessarily smell rotten, but it did have an odd odor - a fishy odor. Searching the internet for this characteristic, we discovered that in some cases, chickens have been raised on fish meal which can affect their taste. Trusting that this was the problem, we went ahead and cooked with it. Still, the smell was so overwhelming even after cooking that it tainted the flavor of our entire meal. A couple of our party weren't overly concerned and went ahead and ate it, but the majority of our group refused and the meal, a skilled dinner that included multiple ingredients, went to waste. Fast forward a couple of days, thinking that it must have been a fluke with the first package of chicken, we decided that we would try our second menu item with the remaining package of chicken. Thankfully, we didn't wait until dinner time to check the meat. This time, there was no question. Upon opening the packaging, our senses were literally assaulted by the smell of death!!! It was absolutely awful!!!!! It was so awful that it took several hours for the smell to leave our suite! There is no way this chicken went that bad in three days in a refrigerator!!! In retrospect, it's fairly obvious that the meat was spoiled when we bought it!!! Now, of course, had this occurred at home, we would have returned the meat for a refund, but here, where it costs at least a hundred bucks round trip for a taxi, that option was not available. Instead, we just had to "eat" the cost of the meat, as well as the other items that had been purchased to accompany it. I so wish we had just gone to Walmart as we had be advised to do by other guests at Vidanta. I certainly won't be going back to this store EVER!!!! read more

I like the Mega store, but their employees could use further training in customer service. On my trip today while checking out the cashier refused to give me my coin change. When I asked her about the change she smiled and went onto the next customer. Let me just say this is not the first time this has happened to me. You must count your change carefully. All the time. I'm a 60 year old tourist from the U.S.A. Has this happened to anyone else? The managers are not visible after normal hours. I had an american coffee at their cafe and the woman would not give me a receipt. Why do you think that is? Any advise would be helpful. This store is clean and orderly. This is truly a one-stop shop. A grocery store with a Wal-Mart feel, while shopping for fresh produce, dairy, pastries, etc, you can also grab any alcohol imaginable (if you're not from Mexico, I suggest trying some of their wines; they don't export too many of them and some are pretty decent) as well as shop for sports equipment and TVs. They also have some fun desserts that I haven't seen Stateside. Credit cards and cash were both fine when we were there. Be aware, some nights alcohol is unavailable for purchase after a certain hour (I think 9:00), so you might not be able to score any after then. They won't even make an exception; the cash register system actually blocks them from being scanned. Prices are great and the people friendly (including the adorable old seniors in green sweater vests bagging); definitely worth coming here! read more

My wife and I never do resorts in our travels. We try to experience things the way locals do... or as much as possible. That means experiencing normal shopping experiences such as what you get at Mega. This is our third trip to PDC, and Mega has been a big part of each trip. Prices are good for the area, and they have virtually everything you could imagine - from water shoes to clothing to electronics to pharmacy to... oh yeah... food. We have stocked up on essentials for our condo or apartment while here, including getting buns from the Bakery and bread and cheese from the deli. The donuts are a great treat and at 6 pesos, very affordable. If you order less than 6, they will wrap them individually for you - which makes throwing into a fridge very easy. Just to give you an idea on pricing - a 170g bag of chips that would cost you 60 pesos on or near the strip is only 27 pesos here - and alcohol is much cheaper too. Even if you just want snacks for your room downtown, or to take to the beach, this is a great place to go to make your experience in PDC more enjoyable. read more

"The Mega" as my dad likes to call it, is the Playa del Carmen equivalent of Super Walmart. They have everything you might need from sunscreen and aspirin, to fruit and beer. This review is intended to leave you with a couple pro tips: 1) You can't buy alcohol after 10:00 pm. We were in line at 10:05 (I kid you not) and watched as they took cases of beer and bottles of wine out of our cart to be put back on the shelves. It was like a dagger to the heart. On the flip side of that, know that they have plenty of liquor options for your beach drinking needs. Just get to checkout time! 2) If you take a taxi, it's not uncommon for your taxi driver to wait outside while you shop. That's what ours did and it was quite convenient! 3) Their baked goods are pretty darn good. You can grab a tray and pick them up as you go along the aisle to create your own assortment. 4) There is an ice cream shop on the main level. My grandma and I grabbed some on our way out and it was delicious. 5) Besides that, they probably have everything else you need. Just like a regular grocery store. So that's about it. If you're renting a place instead of residing at an all-inclusive, or just want some snacks for the road, definitely check out this one stop shop. read more

Gringa that I am, I started calling this store the Mega Pelican because of the pelican in their logo. And I really loved visiting the Mega Pelican! It's like a Mexican Super Walmart. We stopped in about 3 times to pick up snacks for our condo, Mexican treats to take home to friends, and of course, fresh pan from the bakery! I know there are probably better panaderías in town, but since we were at the Mega Pelican in the mornings, and they were just bringing out the fresh baked pastries, this was a one stop shop for everything we needed for the day, plus delicious pastries for breakfast. My friend and I both got flat breads with cream cheese and frosting drizzle. We also bought bolillos when they were warm, which were little pieces of heaven! The Mega Pelican also has a ramp escalator! Having never seen one of these before, we were entertained. For tourists, it's a fun store to visit and see the different types of Mexican products and foods. They also take credit cards which is helpful if you're running low on pesos! read more

Oh Mega....I love you. While on vacation in Cozumel this is the place to find anything you might need. You need medication, they have it. You need a 60 inch TV, they have it. You need booze, oh they definitely have that. Service is beyond friendly. My spanish is pretty awful but all of the workers here try so hard to help you find what you are searching for. We loaded up on meats, veggies, snacks and drinks for our week stay....we came back a few more times throughout the week to grab stuff that we forgot. You should hit up the meat counter and check out their cheese selections, lots of great food. Also don't forget to tip the bag boys/girls....whatever coin change you have left over from your payment is usually given to them. read more

Mega Mart is easy to find as it's right on Constitution Ave. Taxis are right outside if you need a ride. The store has lots--groceries, fresh food, beer & wine & liquor, home goods, pharmacy and some clothing items if needed. You can purchase a hand bag for carrying items if needed. This used to be the best store in PDC- do t know if acquisition by Soriana is reason for decline, but it's not as good as it used to be. Selection is smaller and the store just isn't as clean or attractive as before. Chedraui is much better. Oh, if you're looking for bagels, in store bakery versions are merely rolls shaped like bagels. Same with local brands of cream cheese - doesn't taste or feel like Philadelphia brand. read more

This place confused me. There was SOOOO MUCH going on and they offered SO MUCH!!! But this stop is basically a requirement if you're at a resort and it's not all-inclusive. So grab a cart and do not be alarmed by the moving walkway! First, it's clean-ish. No more dingy than your local Walmart. The place is cleaner than my local Asian supermarket (you know how those get if you frequent them!). Make sure you stock up on beer, it's crazy cheap for local (remember, you're in Mexico, imported is Bud!). The bakery or panaderia side is fun. Grab yourself a platter and go town. Don't be alarmed since the stuff isn't behind glass or covered in anyway. Not used to that coming from the States, but when in Rome I always say. If you\ve never been to a Mexican bakery, ask questions and be adventurous! The butcher area is overwhelming, not going to lie. Especially if you have a language barrier, but just have fun! Warning, all the milk I saw came in shelf stable containers. So unless I missed it, milk in Mexico doesn't come in the jugs we are all used to. And the shelf stable containers made it easier to pack for the drive home! Eggs were also on display not in refrigeration. Don't be alarmed, eggs can actually handle it! I didn't really look at the clothing or anything else besides groceries. What I saw, the prices seemed reasonable, but if you're picky, there is a Walmart nearby which was also a fun place to shop. Didn't have any trouble using plastic and so far, no trouble now that I'm back home! read more

Anyone's first stop in Playa should be the Mega. It's essentially a WalMart...but not really, WalMart is up the street a ways. Anyway, pharmacy items, health and beauty, FOOD, clothing, BATHING SUITS, snorkels, household items, stereos, everything. Basically, if you showed up in Playa with nothing but the clothes on you're back, one stop to Mega would get you squared away. The bakery is so good and the treats are always fresh. Familiar brands like Nature's Valley granola bars, Dannon yogurt, Coke, Coppertone, etc. Also they have beer and wine too! Traveler Tip: save yourself some trouble and just pay cash. Yes, they take credit but it's like a mystical unicorn to them so it never goes smoothly. But, if you really are outfitting your whole family with vacation gear then by all means whip out the plastic! read more

We stopped here to get some basics for our drive. It is the standard american style supermarket with much more (in the market for a motorcycle?). It was easy to look around and they had aisle names in english. The staff were helpful and the check out lines were short. Tip: if you are there in the daytime, park in their covered garage. Mega was within walking distance to our rented condo so we stopped by quite frequently. Had a good selection of food although the store was laid out kind of odd. Needed help to find salsa.. the guy was very friendly and himself had trouble finding it. When he was finally able to locate it we were hit up if we wanted to attend a seminar on a time share (I guess Mega has some sort of travel agency?)... it gets exhausting being hit up every 2 feet on 5th Ave so it was kind of annoying being hit up while shopping for groceries. read more

The meat department is disgusting. You can smell the rotting blood that soaks onto the displays that are obviously not ever washed. Two days in a row my wife and I noticed a disgusting rotting flesh smell coming from the meat department. We will try somewhere else for meats. This is a super convenient store, a short walk from the Playa del Carmen resorts. They do have a little bit of everything, even clothes and appliances! Prices are mixed, with drinks, clothes and baked goods at the very affordable end, and almost everything else was a bit pricier than I'm used to. Considering its location though, I guess the prices are what could be expected. Stock up on bio-degradable mosquito repellent while you're there; it will save you tons later. read more
