Haircuts were nothing special, but got the job done. Staff were friendly enough. Unfortunately, I mistakenly thought my appointment was a half an hour later than it was and had to pay $35 for nothing while I was driving to my appointment without the opportunity to reschedule. I won't be returning to Meister's because I don't believe the quality of service is good enough to warrant as strict a policy as that. I saw good reviews so I wanted to check this place out but I honestly did not have a good experience for a few reasons. The main reason is that I did not get at all what I wanted. I showed the barber two photos of a longer hairstyle that I wanted and described that I wanted to part my hair down the middle or do a 70/30 part. My hair was already a similar length to the photos (my hair was over my eyes and ears) but now it's way too short on the sides and I have nothing to work with on top. The whole time I was faced away from the mirror so I couldn't see what was going on. When he initially started cutting with the clippers, I felt like he was cutting too much already so I asked to see what it looks like. He showed me and it was okay so far but he turned me back around for the rest of the cut. I didn't want to ask to see it again because I got the vibe that he might have been offended (because he asked if I didn't trust him) that I was already doubting the haircut and I didn't want to be rude. Plus it didn't really "feel" like he was cutting that much but it turns out I was wrong once he turned me around at the end. I told him that I was growing my hair out since August (for 5 months) because my previous barber also cut my hair way too short even though I asked for something longer (I showed them the same pictures) and he told me he understood and would get me what I wanted, but ended up doing the same thing of cutting it too short. TLDR: I did not get anything close to what I wanted. If you look at the pictures I attached of what I showed I wanted and what I got, you'll see why I'm upset and put a 1 star and I think anyone would agree (If the barber sees this review, I hope you understand where I'm coming from). They messed my hair up so badly I had to buzz it. I wanted the most traditional middle part hairstyle around and they made me look like a mushroom. For haircuts it almost seems like you can either schedule a week+ in advance for a stylish but pricey cut, or walk into a classic barber or Hair Cuttery style place for something cheaper in all facets but convenient. Given the unpredictability of my schedule, I've oftentimes found myself longing for the perfect in between, and only found it once before they've gone Fishtown busy (Still worth it though! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/franklins-barber-shop-philadelphia). For the longest time it felt like I was chasing a unicorn, but I finally found something like it in Meister's Barbershop! Meister's a a solid classic barbershop with a strong punk rock vibe, and it's nearly tripled the size of most others with 6 chairs and a full house of barbers on busy days. Add in online booking and its possible to schedule an appointment with 48 hours notice, although it is still a fairly new process that can lead to some overbooking on busier days, and might not be the most ideal if you have a set specific stylist in mind. But if you do wait among a good crowd you can at least do so with a decent beer of the canned variety, even if you might have to grab one on your own if the stylist is too flustered to ask. While they definitely haven't led to the best cuts I've ever gotten, they're passable for the price, booking convenience, and detail that the barbers put into their work. Add in the random good conversations, and South Philly punk rock charm, and its a good spot overall. read more

My husband, Shuvanon, has been coming here since they first opened. When he was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, we came here to shave his head. The staff was so unbelievably kind, professional, and so sensitive to the situation. My husband came back today to get his beard trimmed (very excited about some hair growing back) and Rob was so excited to see him. He wouldn't even accept our payment. Look, I'm a busy guy who travels a lot and I need to look professional, which is why I am willing to pay $60 for a basic mens haircut and beard trim (that doesn't include a shampoo) at an overly pretentious place where everyone has a stank attitude. This was my second experience at this place. The first cut was ok, but the barber (Jamie) didn't really listen to how I asked for the back of the cut be done, but I liked the rest of the cut. The first appointment wasn't overwhelmingly impressive, no greeting or clear direction on how to check-in, not even a head nod or grunt from the other barbers in the shop. No one attempted any conversation, even basic greetings throughout the whole experience, and it was just....odd. I thought I would give it a second shot though, and on this appointment I also booked with Jamie, and he took my feedback on the back well ( I was super polite about it), and the back looked great. (still no greeting or any conversation other than at the start of the cut, and I personally witnessed the other barber present be snarly and rude when someone else who had an appointment dared to ask a question) When I got home however, I realized that he had adjusted my left part about a half inch too high, leaving a weird trail of cut hair, that will now have to grow back to look normal. I didn't hop online to leave a bad review, or call to yell or scream, but I did have my assistant (who also booked my original appointment) call to see if I could come into get it fixed because I wasn't happy with it (he is an absurdly polite and professional human being, so there was not even a hint of antagonism on his part I assure you), the gentlemen on the phone became immediately aggressive and dismissive and told him that if I wasn't happy with it I needed to call myself and then hung up on him. So, I feel more than justified in sharing this story and my overall opinion of this place. I tried to be a good human and just resolve it - and since any sort of direct communication clearly wasn't wanted, hopefully this will hit the right ears, or at least serve as a warning to others. My brother was looking for a barbershop that he would continue to go to, but this one wasn't it. To start, none of the workers were welcoming. It wasn't even a busy day as there was only one person getting their hair cut. There were about 3 workers just there and no one bothered to welcome us. Rude. To continue, my brother wanted a specific hair cut and received something completely different. His stylist even asked him if he wanted the stylist's haircut. He wanted to keep his bangs, instead it was chopped off completely. Not only that, the cut was uneven on the sides and the back. I had to fit it because it was that noticeable. We paid and left. Background: I have been going here for about a year. I was very satisfied with Scott and one other guy that had previously cut my hair. In early December 2017, I went in as a walk-in. I was told that they no longer take walk-in hair cuts and I needed to download their appointment app. That's fine. This place is super popular and there was always a line out the door. Scott very kindly took me as a walk-in that day. After my cut, I signed up the for app and booked Scott for an appointment six weeks later. A week or so later I got notification that my appointment had been cancelled. Thinking Scott quit. I booked an appointment with Rob. Great, I finally have appointment with the Man himself. Fast forward to today when I show up five minutes early for my appointment. I ended up waiting for 30 minutes while Rob took his time with the customer previous to me. He knew I was there. Made an appointment to try this spot after my old barber moved. I made an appointment which was super easy. Walked in and wasn't greeted by anyone - I saw someone sitting on some chairs and sat and waited. The barber eventually called me over after finishing with his other client and asked what I wanted - I showed him a photo and then heard nothing else from him the entire cut. He didn't ask if I was a first time client, or even try to talk. He was rough with the tools, didn't offer a straight razor, or to put product in my hair. Also, he brushed the hair off my neck with a paint brush. I kid you not - a paint brush. He then took me to the register, said "there you go" and walked into the back while I checked myself out. Let me begin by saying, I've never felt so convicted in writing a review about a place before especially when it comes to service. Environment: From that "old-school vintage barbershop feel" to the accessibility of charging stations to the lawn chairs outside, this environment was unbeatable. Definitely pretty spacious assuming you come at an off to medium hour. Service: "Remember to sign in on your life side of the binder before taking your seat." (Won't ever forget that again). Easily some of the best in the city for a barbershop. Rob is the one who cut my hair and despite getting extremely caught up in the conversation, learning about his passions, and how much he cares, he has very very fine attention to detail providing excellence in his trade. I love when barbers recommend very particular detailed changes (e.g. not going too tight up top with the fade to maintain shape) because it shows that they are confident in their recommendations. Despite expecting to wait 45 min - 1 hr for a haircut, it is literally worth every single minute (just bring a book to read or surf your phone). Rob and his team are absolutely amazing people and everyone should have an opportunity to experience the shop. So friggin' happy this place exists. After spending nearly 15 years getting cut by a friend in the burbs almost an hour away, I needed to find something closer. Tried a handful of other places around the city and after 5 failed, pretty disastrous cuts, I was starting to lose hope. Finally made it in to Meister's, signed up for the first available barber, and got seated with Jillian within 20 minutes. She asked me what I wanted, immediately understood, and then gave me a super tight cut exactly as I asked. I've been going back to her for close to 9 months now. I love that they take walk-ins only, so I can work around my schedule, but can still request a specific barber. Wait times usually aren't too bad unless they're completely slammed, but if you know it's going to be a while, you can always take a walk down Passyunk and come back. Or chill in the shop and they'll give you a beer or water. A full cut is $26, but they'll also clean you up with a "half cut" for $21 which is great when you want to keep things tight between full cuts. After my vision quest to find a new barber, I'm finally happy with Meisters. They do an amazing job at recruiting barbers who know what they're doing AND are also super nice. Never write reviews but I think this place really just deserves a shitty one from me. I have gone to Meister's 3 times. Each time was a progressively worse experience. Why did I keep going back? Because I assumed maybe it was an isolated mishap-- nope! 1st Visit: The shop is completely empty-- no customers, 2 workers. I walk in an stand a moment, the workers stare at me, so I sit down on their couch. The owner is drinking a beer and on his phone and the idle worker says "You need to sign in". Being the only other human being in the establishment I smiled to myself and just wrote my name down. After which the worker goes over, seems to scan the page (of one written name) for about a minute, and then calls my name while looking around. Maybe he was fucking with me, or maybe he's just that oblivious? Whatever. I asked for a specific haircut and walked out with a generic hipster fade and pomp. Didn't ask for that at all-- Thanks. 2nd Visit: I remembered to sign my name this time. Sat on a sofa with two other guys while we waited. Some worker comes over and offers both guys on either side of me a drink and looks at me and walks away without a word. Me and the other guys laughed about it and I shook it off. When It's my turn to get cut I explain to the barber (the same guy who didn't offer me a beer) what I was looking for and showed him some photos. He put his hands on his head like he was in PAIN and I asked him if that was OK for him to do and he says "I mean I'll do it but don't tell anybody you got it done here because I don't want people to know I did that". Seriously? I put my glasses back on towards the end of the cut only to find that I had the same damn fade and pomp as the first time I came here. Literally did not follow my explanation one bit. I don't understand....... Final Visit: Walk in -- Go to sign my name -- BUT NO BOOK! The woman at the front asked me if I made an appointment via Genesis. I said I wasn't aware of what she was talking about and then she explained that they are now solely on a reservation basis and I needed to download a specific app to make my appointment. I looked behind her and there's one guy cutting hair, no other customers, and two other workers drinking beer on the couch-- laughing and talking. I told her it was fine and that I would go elsewhere. This place is a joke. Disrespectful staff and no idea how to run a business. Probably a gift from Daddy to the kid who's throwing Kensingers back during work and collecting paychecks from a shitty fade job that seems to be the only cut these people can do. Side note - I am the easiest going person and typically laugh at my (and others') misfortunes but this place just really got under my skin. Theres an actual mom/pop barbershop a few blocks up on Passyunk and they absolutely deserve the business. I'm new to the area and was really afraid of getting screwed by sub par cuts from bougie hipster shops... but Meister's is not only fairly priced but everything I look for from a barbershop. The staff are personable without being overbearing, they have both the experience and respect for you/their craft to make sure you leave happy, and they're a no-frills place that is efficient and effective without seeming like your typical Great Clips hair factory just trying to get you out the door. Do yourself a favor and try Meister's out. And don't be afraid of the newbie Scott. My boyfriend went here once because his shop was closed. It felt like a very unwelcoming place. $35 for a haircut that he could've gotten at his barber shop and an attitude with it. When the barber asked him what he wanted, as my boyfriend began to explain the barber literally got annoyed with his request (a fade) and rushed him through while he was speaking, didn't talk the entire time and caused us to never want to return. There is never a traditional "wait" here, always a solid conversation to be had with a fellow patron or a barber. There's also USB ports for charging your devices if you need to stay working until you're the next on the list. They also hand out time appropriate beverages - walked in around 10AM & was instantly offered a fresh coffee even though there was no wait time. Music is always great too - indie-rock vein. Their haircut quality is excellent! they take the time to meet their [& your new] expectations. Let me first say, that I really love this place. I think they give great cuts. My one piece of feedback would be around wait times. This place is popular because it's good, but to make people wait sometimes as much as an hour and a half to 2 hours for a haircut can be rough. Part of it is because their barbers are very meticulous, which is great! I would just love to see the wait times get reduced to maximize people's time. Update: went for awhile and happy to see they went to appointments. I think the quality of the haircuts have gone down significantly. I had two cuts in a row that were subpar. I also think their lack of customer service is kinda crazy. I get it's a hip Barbershop but that doesn't mean you should treat people with a lack of respect. This is the best barbershop in Philadelphia that I've found in 7 years of living here. The place is cozy, has complimentary water or beer in the fridge while you wait for the most consistent haircut around. I've had my hair cut by almost the entire staff and they have all been excellent. Great music is always on and the location is clearly a plus.
