The shop runs through like a tunnel. Coming in from a busy Brunswick Rd one can see the light at…read morethe end of the tunnel that is the donation area out the back. Between here and there is jam packed and ordered all manner of goods. Clothes, books, furniture, music and every other nick-nack you can think of. The mix playing is either top 40 or old 40s classics, which works in a very strange way. I suppose it's to complement the goods, some of which have been labelled Fashionable or Vintage an priced accordingly. Much better to pick through for a bargain yourself. I have a strange affiliation with old CDs and tragic record covers, so for me this place is a winner every time. The furniture out the back includes some pretty heavy duty pieces, so on most occasions this place is worth a look.

Don't even bring your wallet, just stick a $20 note in your pocket because that's probably all you'll need to buy the load of clothes and bric-a-brac you're inevitably going to find. This store is enormous and it's full of crap. I'm not being mean, I'm sure they'll tell you the same. The fact is, if you have the eyes and the patience to spot the diamond in the rough, and you don't mind trawling through racks and racks of rough stuff, you'll get your bling, and you'll proudly tell people that it only cost you a fiver...even less possibly, 20% less if you're a student and you buy it on a Sunday, or a senior and buy it on a Monday. Savers provides little red baskets on wheels for you to drag your loot around in until your arms and shoulders are shaking with exhaustion and excitement, and you know there's nothing left to do but to queue for ages (sometimes) for a change room to make sure that flowery, mid-80s, Sussans shirt goes with the long, Indian skirt you found in the Long Indian Skirts aisle. The shop front is bright pink, which makes it hard to miss, but just in case, it's sandwiched between another clothing store called The Very Curious Kitten and the fantastic bar, The Alderman. Whilst we were chatting, Lisa kindly showed me her latest bag tricks, i.e. fresh new stock! In the bag were some beautiful vintage dresses, great shirts for men, and - keep your eyes on the prize - a pair of what looked like brand new, high waisted, flared Karen Walker jeans...and do you know what these jeans were priced at? Less than $50. That's right, you heard me. In case you haven't figured it out already, prices here are incredibly reasonable. Most skirts and shirts are around the $30-something mark, dresses $45-ish, and I've bought a couple of pairs of shoes here that cost around $40. I'm not so clued up on the men's clothes, but there's lots of that too, and if the guys' stuff is priced in any way like the girls' clothes, there'll be bargains aplenty. Opening times can be changeable, but generally it's open from 11am till 5pm Thursday to Sunday.

There you'll find an array of cheap second-hand sofas, chairs, desks, tables, fridges, microwaves, pieces of artwork and much more. If you don't have a car, they can even arrange delivery of your stuff if you live in the area. I found some amazing bar stools for $15 each, a lazyboy style chair for $25 and some cheap sofas at around $30 each. In short: it is an absolute treasure chest and you can also feel good about contributing to a well recognised charity that is working for an Australia that is free from poverty. Good luck exploring!

This is possibly my single favourite op shop in Melbourne…read more The clothes are very well laid-out by style and colour (e.g. All white t-shirts are together) although my OCD takes over occasionally and I find myself putting stuff elsewhere if I see it incorrectly stashed. The funky music always makes me smile, and there is a vintage section at the front where they have special items. They have a ton of adult clothing, some kids' stuff, books, a load of kitchenware, lots of furniture and jewellery. They are even open now on Sundays so I don't have to cram my weekend op shop fix into Saturday! The only thing I could think of to improve is to offer a few more hooks in the change rooms.

You can find some truly odd things in here, which I think is wonderful, and is therefore one of the reasons I often come here when I need to find strange and funny items like bright green, curly wigs or an 80s party dress - these are for playing dress ups with my niece and for wearing to fancy dress dos rather than my personal style, ok. I also like it for cheap costume jewellery. Strings and strings and beads and fake pearl and wooden necklaces hanging garishly on wire racks are a bargain (I like to buy them then pull them all apart and do my own little jewellery remix).

It's at this point that stores tend to get a little more practical. Considerably less crowded than the more popular (and ginormous) Savers, the Brunswick Salvos is decent, mid-sized op-shop. Among its' many strengths is the broad selection of furniture it houses throughout the year, with prices ranging from a what could considered a clear steal to ridiculously overpriced for non-antique second-hand goods. Aside from that, it's a pretty standard op-shop, with ornaments, kitchenware, books, clothes, shoes and knick knacks all from a range of eras, tastes, styles and in variable conditions. They have a half off day every now and then, and it's always worth a look in when perusing the local area, but the location does mean that it can be a little picked over. It's just too damn convenient, really.

Which is why I'm ecstatic about this Vinnies in Glenroy! Great fashion for cheap cheap CHEAP! I've bagged some designer bargains recently including a pair of Guess Jeans for myself and black Calvin Klein pants for my husband. I probably love it here most for the home furnishings and eccentric homewares and antiques. They have a massive range of really cheap, furniture in good condition including desks, tables and chairs, cupboards and shelving. Take the time to check out the beautiful assortment of heritage glassware. A real gem of a find!
