I bought a ukulele here two years ago, which was a great experience, so I stopped back in the store today just to check it out. The store was empty so Oliver (I think that was his name) was playing one of the ukes. He was FANTASTIC. My husband and I walked into the shop to look around, we were 2 of 4 people in the store and were not greeted when we walked in. At first glance it wasn't a problem, employee was talking with someone else. However we did notice that every other person that walked in after us was greeted, and employee even went up to someone else who he had missed to say hello and offer help. Not once did the employee talk with us, offer help, and when we finally wanted to pay we had to flag him down twice to try and check out. We did purchase some items from the store but honestly it was really off putting to be treated that way when we were also the only customers of color in the store. Coincidence or not, we left feeling ignored and would not recommend the shop based on our experience. read more

My husband is literally playing his Mele Ukulele as I write this review! We were back on Maui last month, and decided to take one of the free ukulele classes they offer at The Shops at Wailea (where this shop is located). It was such a fun hour of learning some of the basic strumming techniques and chords, and even playing some simple songs outside with the instructor, Austin. My husband picked up ukulele playing so fast compared to me, but he did have a slightly unfair advantage of already knowing how to play acoustic guitar and bass guitar! Nevertheless, the 8 or so other kids and adults that were taking the group class with us were all picking it up pretty well too. I noticed that my husband was beaming ear to ear and having such a blast, that I decided to buy him his own ukulele for Christmas! A big mahalo to Austin for helping us out with our purchase, and making sure we got my hubby the right ukulele. He even jammed with my husband in the shop while we were testing out different ones. It was awesome! If you're interested in learning how to play the ukulele, we recommend the great hour-long classes at The Shops at Wailea, put on by Mele Ukulele! They provide the instruments for the classes which are held outdoors near the center courtyard. The class we joined was on a Friday at 3pm. Austin has incredible skills and an evident passion for playing, as well as an abundance of patience in teaching me (very much a beginner) a couple of helpful tips. He is knowledgeable and takes time to make sure you are getting the ukulele you want! No pressure to buy either, as Austin let me try out about a dozen ukuleles before I even said I was interested in buying one. I wanted to bring home a ukulele on this trip to the islands but had never even held one. I went to Mele Ukulele at The Shops at Wailea. Eva was very friendly, patient and knowledgeable. She explained the different sizes, materials used and whether that are hand made or production. She was not pushy or judgmental if I bought the cheapest or most expensive in the store. She let me try each type to find the one that spoke to me. They have a large chart with a few basic chords that anyone can play right away when trying out the ukes. Eva will show you and answer any questions you have and questions you did not think you have. So I walked away with a beautiful all koa wood concert Uke. Love the sound, looks and feel. Took it back to the lanai at the condo and was playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow within an hour! Love it! read more

Very disappointed with the owner. Very bad business to price gouge her customers. She would not honor the price of IZ sheet music that she listed it for. I walked three miles one way to get it and she increase the price knowing how interested I was in the music. I will never buy from her business ever again. The own don't know how to treat an honest customer. It was a small price to pay for a lesson learned but rather she preferred the bad feedback and reputation she will get out of this. Buyers please beware. Do your homework before buying from them. They are so overpriced. The IZ music book listed for $19.99 and she gouged me for $35. 75% above the asking price. The store sales person Annie helped me select the perfect ukulele and gave me tips on playing and protecting my instrument. She was so nice and helpfull, she is the absolute "Best". The company stands behind their product. When I got home I noticed my Ukulele case had bubbles. They offered an exchange and sent me a shipping label. Great business and an excellent product. I stopped by this ukulele shop as a tourist, looking for a quality concert/tenor ukulele to bring home. This was the only one in a 20 mile radius, so it seemed like the most obvious choice to check out first. (Located on the top floor at the Shops at Wailea) The selection here is impressive, even though all of the ukes are exclusively Mele. With the high quality, comes high prices. You can find ukes from around $125 to $800. Pretty has its price. Even though I left the shop empty handed, the customer service was good even as they were busy teaching another customer how to play basic chords. The woman who was running the shop that day was great in that she focused and cared for each customer in a simple gesture. Overall, beautiful place to check out for a nice uke to start or add to your collection. read more

Super Fun and Informative I'm actually learning ukulele and looked forward to visiting Mele Uke. The website is a bit limited so wasn't sure what to expect. I was amazed how much better the store was. They had a ton of ukes hanging all around the shop within reach and they encouraged me to try any of them big, small, cheap, expensive, unique, etc. Got some really great tips from the employee - failed to get her name but she had a German accent. She helped me find books, charts, picks and other stuff that I've been in need of as a self learner. I'm a lefty but have learned my chords upside down so I can pick up a uke anywhere and play. I was pleasantly surprised that she encouraged this rather than tell me I need to restring or learn right like I've heard elsewhere. I read some reviews about Chinese-made ukes and such but I didn't find that to be the case. Many of their ukes are Hawaiian made and some even Maui. Cheaper ones are made, I believe she said, in the Philippines. I ended up walking out with a new hard case, rubber picks, books & charts and even a souvenir shirt and gifts for another uke player in the family. I found prices to be very reasonable and service excellent. I will definitely be back when I'm good enough to get a nice uke. I can see myself spending hours there trying all the ukes until the right one picks me. My wife and family enjoyed perusing the upscale shops while I spent time in Mele. read more

He is full of so much information about the different woods,tones, history etc of the Ukulele. Super helpful not pushy. Finally on my 3rd trip to Hawaii, I decided I would look at ukuleles for the first time. I have played guitar for over 25 years, but I didn't know anything about the differences of guitar and ukulele. I think riding in the Jeep listening to the old Hawaiian radio stations finally pushed me into looking into the instrument. I initially was just shopping in this shopping center, and i noticed the sign on the 2nd floor. So I decided to go in there and just have a look around. Maybe I would try and play one this time. I honestly wasn't really ready to buy one, but Austin was so helpful. He showed me laminate tops, solid ones, more expensive ones with bindings, etc. We finally decided on a few different types of wood that I liked and he showed me a few chords, and I just played and played. I told Austin I would be back in a few days at the end of my trip and left. When I came back, I knew which one I wanted, and Austin gave me a great deal, threw in a killer case at a crazy low price, and shipped it home for me.
